I would be perfectly fine if nobody outside this Forum ever knew about psytrance.

Really? You don't think this ignorance has anything to do with the fact that the majority of people are deeply conditioned by mainstream values, beliefs and entertainment..?

No, I don't think that at all. It has to do with the fact that psytrance is unknown to the "general public" (outside of Israel and Greece, I guess). Has nothing to do with values or Black Helicopter Conspiracy or that 2012 Mayan apocalyptic thingy. House is mainstream now. And millions of those people "deeply conditioned by mainstream values, beliefs and entertainment" listen to it. It was not the case 30 years ago. Will psytrance get in the next 30 years where house is now? Probably not (IMHO). For reasons completely unrelated to the lack of CD sales, btw.

Electronic Dance music reached the peak of its popularity in 1995-1997.

The time of superstar dj's, Orbit producing Madonna's Ray of Light, big clubs, big out door events, big album sales, big loveparades, etc etc, is past gone.

I am happy with the state of things as they are, not too popular to be played on the radio, not to unknown so that enough parties are made.

"The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

I didn't say anything like that. You don't have to use mockery get you point across.

I was not trying to mock you - sorry if it came out looking like I did.

To elaborate on my earlier comment, nobody I know ever heard of psytrance because
- most of them are not into electronic music at all,
- most of them are "clean" drug-wise,
- most of them are my age or older (40s-50s) and were in places other than Goa, Greece or Israel in their 20s.

Now, some of it has to do with the mainstream values: we wanted to complete our graduate school asap and when we had time and money to travel overseas, we'd go visit our families in the old country. And on the weekends we'd be perfectly content with beer and Bonney M, rather than acid and Astral Projection. Now, I am pretty sure the situation would've been different if we'd lived in Israel, but we didn't.

As for the mainstream media - it's always in your face. Psytrance Radio is not. And I believe it's because there is an overall trend of preserving this scene as an underground subculture. Most posts I've read here, for example, expose a pretty elitist attitude. It seems like many people wouldn't want to see psytrance become more popular to begin with. It's like they are members of an exclusive club. People talk about "oneness", as long as it's oneness with other "enlightened beings", not with those mainstream whores, right?

I personally don't care one way or another. I like the music. How many people besides me like it is none of my concern. It would be cool to have a "real" (not Internet) conversatin with somebody who knows what music I am talking about, but I won't die if it never happens.

So, can somebody tell me why we should be concerned with this question anyway?

I think that psytrance, will never become mainstream, because there is not much publicity about it.
To know about the psytrance culture you have to dig around foruns, and most of people don't like that.
But i think that is a good thing, because of this artists can focus more about making good tracks, them sell thenselfs to the mainstream money.           where words fail music speaks

From my point of view, whole genre will never be mainstream, but some artists sure are by now.

It will not be mainstream because it simply does not cater to the what makes music popular. Psy trance is not easily accessible to our average member of the public. I have played many styles of psy to family & friends over the years and they just simply don't like it, it's just noise & boring to them. I think lack of vocals is a major part of it as well, as many ppl like to be able to sing along to their favorite tunes.

That being said it looks like Paul Oakenfold is on the war path to push the more commercial styles of progressive etc. into the commercial/club scene.
