Inspired by this thread http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/50929/forum/1 where people talk about people who mask under false nicks in order to get the latest tunes and perhaps be the best DJ from their nation. Got me thingking, is't really the latest tunes that make a good DJ? I sure don't think so. I mean there's so much music (psytrance) being released these days that there's no way one can hear it all. I'm sure many say 2001 tracks could pass as "unrlsddddd killlaar", no? So anyways what do you think makes a good dj? For me one thing for sure is the expressions the dj makes. When D-Nox was playing at Boom I'm sure everyone saw his face and saw how much the man was enjoying himself. Hell it put a big grin on my face It's the little things that make a good dj, and ofcourse good music is important too

A good dj imo is a dj with who can mix without loosing the beat or make it sound bad and knows how to make buildups and know what tracks that will work on the crowd.
A good dj is also someone who can handle the stress when playing.

The best dj is the one who can do all of this with a nice smile on his\her face and connect with the dancefloor.

YEs....a good DJ must be able to beat mix.....his set must be smooth.
HAve builds at the right places.....and UNDERSTAND the crowd!

And please.....he must be semi sober!

IF he coked up...NO
IF he drunk...NO

Seen too many bad things happen when the play like this.

hum..... a good dj is a dj that doesnt use bpm counter, hehe

Honestly a great dj is for example Skazi, ppl can say what they want about the music he is playing, etc...
And to be honest i dont like it much either, but iv seen him from behind the stage, he is fuckin crazy ass skiled when it comes to mixing.

Honestly i dont like DJ much i prefer watching live, even if it is not as good, at least (most of the time) the artists play there own music, they dont take the fame by playing other ppl music.
I read somewhere in a forum a girl comparing an Astrix live set with a DJ that played before, she said that the dj kicked astrix ass, of course he can, he can select only ass kickin ''HIT'' tunes and play that, then Astrix comes on stage and plays his stuff, wich he made and you will find it weak next to it.

oups got a bit off-topic           Making full-on (specialy with a vb-1) is like playing FIFA in easy mode, you're always sure to win.

Some good points raised here...

For me its a combination of things:

1) must be an excellent mixer capable of many different styles of mixing - must mix in key, use both cross fader and volume controls, good use of eq and keep the vibe moving on the dancefloor
2) must be able to connect with the crowd and give them what they want and draw from the reaction on the dancefloor
3) music does not have to be unreleased...i find some of the unreleased tracks that are supposedly 'killah' are actually very average...seems to me its the ego that I have this track and you dont that makes them so good!
4) most important for me is to have fun up there!

If a DJ can do these then his job is done

Hello Denis!

in 2004 many people connected to the psy and full on, i think that in a party there are 100 (from lets say 1000) that know half of the tracks that i play.
if i play unr tracks its gives me something unique, that nobody know these tracks, that after the party they come after me and ask what i played there and thats one of the point that make you a good dj, to get a new good stuff that nobody have, that show to the crowd that you have the ability to get tracks that didnt releast yet that makes you BIG.

You all say thats good to play released music because you all artists or friend of artist or whatever that gets all the unr tracks from all the artists, and look from the pointview of the people that cant get these unr (i dont say the lame faker of Bizzare is right..) it feels sucks that you cant be envolved with all artists and to hear their new works that maybe come out a year after or maybe doesnt come out at all.

I dont say we poor or smt but it sucks when you go to top 10 and see only unr tracks that i cant hear them, buy them or whatever..

But you have to be a good dj at first, second, put good music to the crowd.

of course i'm with all the great minds here but i can say that i most atrracted to the "story" of a set
how's it start , their purpose , the "continuation" from track to track , and actulyy i'm looking on like a good story where you can relax and freak out           <One learns people through the heart, not the eyes or the intellect>

a dj shld

1) Play the latest Unreleased tunes
better if got from the internet via soulseek or other hubs
2) Preferably play Mp3s >>> what monster sound they create
3) Should not show emotion>>highly professional..no dancing or moving behind the decks
4) should be highly intoxicated

i don;t think so!

Kill the vibe maybe!

I can play a set of 2 year old tunes and make it rock!

Its not just a matter of playing a track....and then mixing out the last minute.

Layering...makes the track sound differant ...but they still know it....like RMX's.

Make the set your OWN....u are DJing yes...but if you use the equipment as an instrument....then u are PERFORMING!           Being wicked is AAIIT!

i think its not true, you saw once Talamasca, Psychotic Micro, Azax Syndrom in a show?
they are getting crazy and dancing with the crowd, i think its a good thing, they show to the crowd that they enjoy from their music too..

sure.....give out energy to the crowd....to pump them ....in order for them to go crazy and shout and dance like crazy....which makes me (as a DJ) play even better or harder....and go more crazy!

Its like a circle of energy ...u feed them ...and they feed you!           Being wicked is AAIIT!
