yo

for me a good dj is someone how really knows what he is doing behind the decks.
mostly you can recognize a skilled dj just by watching him.
then he must react to the people behavior.
sometimes you can beat them like hell but sometimes not...
it depends.
and unrl tracks are not the key to be a good dj.
boom           - last possible solution
- trick music
- ambivalent records

for me mixing isn't such a big deal. As long as they aren't wrecking trains or leaving massive ambient gaps, it's all about track selection for me           new Hadal Drop album on the way

True Sam.

A good playlist!

VERY IMPORTANT.

I do so hate it when i am really getting into a track...and it mixes into something totally unfitting!

Nice one Sam.....i was purely thinking on Technical terms.           Being wicked is AAIIT!

A good Dj doesn t need unreleased stuff.......
Unreleased also doesn t mean that these tracks are better.....
A good Dj should know which track he can play on this and which not.....

agree with u mate!! and with most of the others
its all about track selection, and it doesnt have to be unreleased stuff! and mixing skills...the mixes doesnt have to be so clean and professionall but the minimum are required
and when a dj is digging the music he is playing it gives a good feeling to the crowd...when im playing i dig and enjoy the music!

Seriously man, where is the skill in that???

Any one can get up there and press play and choose tracks they like and that work well on the dancefloor. Beat mixing is a minimum requirement in my book.

Transferring the energy from one track into another, while keeping the vibe and energy on the dancefloor is a skill...now I am not saying track selection is not important, but without having basic beatmixing skills you are severely limited in what you can do with your music in my opinion.

most of the time, if you look around, people can recognise the transitions in tracks. It's not a conscious thing, the artist writes a track with a certain flow & when that flow is dying away towards the end of a track, even if you beatmix in another track, there is still a lull where dancers will slow, unless you mix from peak to peak to peak, in which case we may as well go listen to NRG or something

for me, "the skill" in picking the right tracks is in choosing tracks that don't require mixing in order to carry energy right through until the end. The music I'm interested in doesn't lend itself to mixing, because when you mix it you lose part of the song, which will conclude itself appropriately if left to do it's thing.

To be honest, I don't think beatmixing is very skillful at all. I learnt to beatmix within about 3 months of buying decks. It took me MUCH longer to learn how to create a magical journey (I'm still working on that more than 5 years later)           new Hadal Drop album on the way

Agree with you their Sam, some good points made. I forget we are on polar opposites in regards to our musical styles!

In regards to beatmixing, you are right it is bloody easy. However, the skill comes when no one can pick that you have changed tracks

I don't agree. You can mix ALLMOST everthing. For me the art and the skill is putting the wright tracks together so you can MIX without losing the energy and flow of the song.If you mix music that doesn't lend itself for mixing then you should try harder since it is more difficult. I don't understand that you claim beatmixin is easy and on the other hand don't mix the song becuz it doesn't lend itself to it? It is all about finding that particilar song that would make those unmixable songs mixable to create a flow wich connot be achieved without beatmixing. Offcourse there are exceptions.

man, have you ever tried beatmixing Texas Faggott? Or even more difficult, Scozbor? Maybe Nam Shub? It doesn't work! There's no point anyway! The tracks are usually freaked out to the end! Beat-mixing Traunce on the other hand is easy - count the number of bpm difference between the tracks, multiply by ~0.7, pitch up / down by that amount then fine tune by ear & hey presto, we have a match! Even with the really nice melodic trance, why would you want to fuck with the pitch? I leave tracks in the key they're written.           new Hadal Drop album on the way
