a good skilled dj can pick 2 trax and make a third one out of the picked ones, play with the fx (if any available) and just have fun with the music while it still sounds good..

some good dj attributes....

-being able to concentrate and stay focused.
keeping a coherent flow in the music, not being too boring though, giving a sense of journey through playing tunes that complement each other in sequence. (not being distracted by friends and girls and spliffs and the like) (being relatively sober enough to stand up and see straight is key. not doing lines while playing hehe.)

-keeping the beat driving with accurate mixing is crucial to keeping people on the dancefloor throughout the party. also knowing when to let the space between tracks, or breaks in th emiddle of tracks play out to give the dancers a break too.

-playing music that moves you, the dj, will in turn move the dancers. if the dj is dancing it is contagious.

-smiling and truly enjoying yourself as you play is one of the best attributes.

-being good about keeping levels where they should be and not blasting too loud. not distorting a bunch of red lights, thats for jungle djs.

-playing music thats energetically appropriate to the crowd, more than "reading a crowd" its about understanding the vast different kinds of trance energies and using them to enhance the experience that is being created.

(i for one feel like i can beatmatch well 90% of the time, and some other times, i would rather not force it, but its still my turn to play, and when that happens i rely on being able to dig out the most incredible tracks that dont demand to be mixed as hard. this year i played a set where i beatmixed only 20-30% and everyone thought it was my best set ever... i still make mistakes sometimes, but hey, i'm just a monkey, and i still get booked a lot hehe)

- having a certain style that people can expect from you, or more specifically a certain level of quality that they can expect.

-being humble and not coming off egotistical or holier than thou . especially in this day and age where everyone is or could be a dj. being a friendly person helps also. having a good attitude and being laid back.

- having a good reputation which comes from consistency and reliability. showing up on time, prepared, not rude or demanding, eager to play and have fun as a primary focus, not obsessed with money.

- being able to play well on shite equipment is an advanced skill, that i sometimes wish i did not have to practice playing on piece of shit pioneer 100's ever ever. but you still have to rock the party even if you cant see the numbers or figure out the mixer in a dark club with loud music while someone is trying to explain shit to you. knowing how to use what you have to make the music do what it needs to do to raise the energy up. on that note its good if you can discuss what equipment needs are long before the event so you can play your best. if you must bring your own equipment then you should show up with enough time to set it up before the party starts imho.

-djs have to be smart, react quickly to changes, energetically open. and aware of whats going on around you.

- having good music, not necessarily new or unreleased, but playing it from a loving and giving place within yourself, not showing off, but also taking charge and taking people on a journey is also valuable. a tender balance... knowing your music and how to sequence tracks based on what happens when you played the one before the next one. knowing the difference between styles and tempos, and how powerful it is to speed up or slow down and not just slam at 145 all the time....

-having pre-written setlists is a cop-out! ive seen many djs do this, thier sets are pre-determined... it ends up sounding empty and not connected to the moment. one time a dj lost his list mid set, at a big festival in new york last summer, we all laughed at him when he freaked out and couldnt figure what to play next.

ok! great topic. makes me think a lot!

I agree with a level of quality, but to be honest, I find it a bit boring when a DJ plays the same style week in, week out - you just end up knowing exactly what they're gonna play. I like a bit of flexibility           new Hadal Drop album on the way

very interesting topic-
yes many nice points brought up.
For me I like DJs that are good at doing what they do, presenting the music they play in the best way it can be presented.
A DJ who interprets the music in a way I never imagined is my personal favorite - getting to experience the music in a whole new light, blowing my minds to pieces!
I would have to say that a really good DJ will give me a new experience. Whether he does that thru amazing energy, totally new tracks, superb mixing, I could care less. Sticking to one little point too much can sometimes spoil a potentially great experience.
Definitely Goa Gil is the one DJ who manages to blow me away every single time I see him. Each time, he pushes the music into an unknown territory that I have never imagined possible, and from that point when you think nothing crazier can POSSIBLY happen, he comes at you with worlds of new sounds to continue blowing you away. I feel every time I dance to his set something new is happening, each time I walk (or crawl ) out of the party I find myself saying it ws the most mind blowing experience ever. And he did it again, in Pune last week. Holy shit that was killer!!!
For one he interprets the music in his own very original way, has an amazing talent for actualizing the potential power each track beholds. I remember thinking at some points, man this track is so killer, but if I had this track, what the hell could I do with it? (OR, what the hell would I play after this track?? and he always seemed to find the perfect track to play at that moment.) Many times a certain track can only be so crazy after 12 hours of an intensely psychedlic journey. How can I blast one of those mid-twisting Zik tracks or a cosmo track flying at 155 BPM when I can only play a two hour set in TOkyo, to people who have never heard this kind of music??
ANyway, to get back on track, the interpretation of the music coming from a DJ, to see the music in a new perspective is the most interesting skill a DJ can have. ANd 80 percent of the recent 'DJs" that you see (for example in Goa) that play 'dancefloor killers' every track from their vaunted mp3 collection, they are NOT DJs. there is NOTHING deep from this, no personal touch of any kind, just playing the most famous people's tracks. THis is NOT a new, mind expanding experience, and especially after seeing someone like Gil play, it just seems like a joke, a kids game.
I could care less what sound a DJ plays, I will respect him/her as a DJ if they put their personal touch to the set and I can understand the way they see the music. If they play the music I love and they are rocking away with great energy, all the better!
BUT- at the end of the day, after the DJ can do ALL of these things mentioned previously in this thread, they STILL have to go out and get gigs. Maybe making their own events, or making good connections. But its not WHAT you can do or know, its WHO you know, that will get you the gigs in the end.
Man its hard work being a DJ!

ANyway that is my two cents, very nice thread, BSM I like your response and COsmos nice point also about knowing what the crowd wants more than they thinnk they know.

Well everyone have a nice day!

I think dj´s should only play what they like.
Then ít´s up to the organizers to choose dj´s for the party.
If all dj´s play what the people want to here it will result in the thing we call mainstream and we will have the same music everywhere.
A dj in this scen is an artist.
They will come up with their own stories and it will be interesting to listen to it.

My thoughts:)
