I mix the first/last two minutes of most tracks. This allows for the effect of the next track really gaining momentum just as the previous track is calming down. Most tracks have most of their elements established within about two minutes, and will be peaking with about two minutes to go. So if you're always mixing the first and last two minutes, you'll have a smooth flow. Consider that if you're playing mostly 7 minute long tracks, and you're trying to get 12 tracks down in an hour, you need to mix the first and last two minutes of the track. I don't think the artists wrote their tracks for DJs only to play the peak parts, and I respect that.

That don't mean nuthin' - many people at parties would dance to a guy farting into a microphone and beating on the ground with a metal stick.

AHHAHAHAHAHHAHA!
This is soooo true... I presume you have been in portuguese trance parties

Big-up jaimz... 2 minute mixes are the "middle path" of psy-djing, not laying it on too thick nor neglecting your duties

i love it when i mix so long i run out of one song and theres only 40 seconds left on the next one, thats a good time to use the ambient intro/outro trick , and throw a loop or 3 on plus some effects, you can create a great build back up.

some tracks are made to play out all the way and some just arent.

i never saw any house or techno dj that just don t know how to mix playing in big parties .... only in the trance scene i think .... how can someone be paid for play in a party when he don t know how to mix ? i don t know which one is the most ridiculous , the organiser that book a dj that don t know how to mix or the supposed dj that can go on a stage without knowing his job.... i also dont undersand so much how being famous or label manager can change someone that have no idea of mixing into a "dj ". some " dj " should practice at home and just learn their job .... specially when they are paid so much for that ...

although somehow correct it is not fair to compare the commercial scenes with the underground trance scene cause the latter has a realm (or at least we want it to have) to it that embraces more chaotic contexts.
many of the djs mentioned as bad mixers has through their work gained a title that better correspond to gurus than djs and therefore it's hard to judge what is good or bad cause they still have the same importance for the scene.
Like I mentioned before I'm cursed as a dj to not stand trainwrecking but I still accept and embrace the context that is our trance scene ... it's charm comes from not being or trying to be perfect which we have enough of in our daily lifes.

That's a nice point Peter, but maybe not true for all these guys.. As some of them assume it, and share their fun and "easy vibe"... while others hide it and tend to show up.

Even the japanie master , Tsuyoshi Suzuki , dont mixes with beat-mix.....he wait the track over and than up the other track.
I guess that most people dont care about the mixes...just the music - I DO CARE ABOUT THE MIXES !

Most of us have heard all of this before. Its simple. Some people like a talented dj. One that is good with track selection and beat matching skills. For these people a train wreck (When a dj plays two song out of time with each other) derails the dance and the flow of the event. As a dj I can tell you that beat matching is not hard and can be learned by a small child in a few months (My 8 yo niece learned quite nicely).. These people feel cheated that someone can be as popular as Gil/Raja/ect and not have spent the few months it take to learn this simple task.

On the other hand there are people that do not care at all about the skills of the dj. They want "Vibe" they want killer unreleased tracks. They want a Shaman. Gill fits that better than most people.

There are two reasons that I have noticed people get into psy in the USA(IMHO) one group is the x-raver/rocker that is tired of crappy mainstream EDM/music and is attracted to the complex, high end sound of psy-trance. They are there to dance and be with friends and play under the stars. The second group is people seeking a higher connection to the dance. They want a ritual. They want "intention" and "Vibe". This is an elusive concept to many that do not connect with eastern ritual and dogma. If you fall in the first group you may not like the old guys "Ritual Trance Dance". If you fall in the second you will most likely think they are perfect at what they do.
With so many live acts in the States this summer I would tend to support the live act with what little money I have. So much music is traded it is one of the only ways to keep this music alive. Dj's that cant mix is fine for some folk but this summer I will support the Live artist. With out them the old guys would have little to make us dance with.
