regarding your comparison to goa.... i disagree - i dont think that is where cutting edge psychedelia is today. i consider what comes out of Eskimo, Psysex, Pixel+Domestic, Wrecked Machines, Silicon Sound in that genre and what comes out of Sun Control Species, Sensient etc in their genre to be far more psychedelic and innovative, both in production sense and in new sounds. i would classify Doof Records to make an example as my definition of undeground music. but ofcourse AGAIN, to each his own.

I totally agree the music coming from artists like star-x, silicon sound, serious isness, Atomic pulse is much more psychedelic in my opinion. The dark psy has a good dark atmosphere many times but when it's missing the psy melodies well for me there is no high you are going nowere it's repetitive! My opinion of course...

I just got to state a couple of things before I get to work.
I agree with you all on other psychedelic examples. I'm NOT saying that "darkpsy" is the only genre that is still psychedelic! Now that would only be a stupid thing to say.
Its just that I see "darkpsy" as a very NON mainstream style, because it contains 0% cheezy fat. Same as older "Goa" 0% cheese. And as Blue Orb wrote.. Wonder how "darkpsy" will sound when/if it ever gets mainstream? Put on some cheese, and i think your closing in PSYK

melody is self defined..........

i find these random sounds with some mind altering effects with squishes and glitches sweet to my ears .........

i define that as melody depends on what u define it as ...........

my 2 cents

peace

To me Dark psy is also the continuation of the genre "psychedelic trance"..

I categorize like this (the things in paranthese are subgenres within each genre)

Full On(Melodic, Soft, Progressive)
Progressive(House, Trance, Soft)
Psychedelic Trance(Melodic, Dark, Wacky)
Chillout(Ambient, Breakbeat, Dub)

For me, its easier to keep things in 3 subgenres - It doesnt have to make sence to others at all.

Basicly, the difference between full on and psychedelic trance in my world lies in how many weird sounds are present - how twisted and distorted the soundscape is.

if you ask me the modern day goa is the stuff that comes out from mainly twisted records like for example prometheus' robot-o-chan. another example would be blowfish - puffed up from surreal audio..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

well most of the stuff that is termed as "darkspy" these days by people is no where near to being psychedelic.......

i for one truly love darkpsy.........just that only a few artists are liked by me

and it being the extension of goa in these times it true to an extent......i feel that some of it gives the old goa vibes........
its very very psychedelic
its far from melodic........but its a much better form of music for me to reach what i seek when dancing

keep the dark underground           At the end there is a DOOR & waiting for you on the other side of that door is either HEAVEN or HELL

Is it also melodic as old goa?

Thanks god it's not, otherwise yes will be cheeZy commercial, and we would have not evoluted into how it sounds todaY, melodies use to make it back then, but not anymore , it does not sound right and as mad as it's suppose to sound, melodic trance there is no difference then that played on most radio stations ie: Commercial, ...Well thats most of our opinion thats why we stick to Dark Psy as you call it !!!

Comparing Neuromotor or Fungus Funk to goa acts like Green Nuns of the Revolution or Doof is mind boggling. It would be like comparing The Delta and Hallucinogen - they both have that 'atmospheric' sound to them, but the comparison is absolutely out of place.

The whole point of goa music is flowing from melody to melody, a load of psychedelic/acidic vibe, changing the atmosphere of the track, not repeating anything in the same way (if at all) and usage of loads of fat analog sounds. None of these elements exist in the 'dark' genre. It's just impossible to compare the two... the only form of full-on (and yes, dark psy is just another style of full-on, not a genre on it's own) that could even compare would be the old 1996-1998 full-on (Quirk, Tim Schuldt, GMS's first album). Goa melodies sometimes appear in new full-on tracks, but it's like saying that rock elements exist in psytrance because there's a bassdrum there           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Goa had a very melodic phase mid 90's.
It was in it's roots a more rough, dark and industrial sound.

At least in the nights on parties even in the heydays of total ecllipse, doof, astral projection there was not at all only melodic stuff being played.

For me many confuse what goa music really is with some stuff that was getting released and promoted sometime 94-94. Thats just a small part of the goa sound.
There always been a morning sound with melodies and a more dark and industrial night sound and I sure hope it stays that way.

i see the lack of melody is many of the more modern songs of many trance genres not just psy. Melody is an important factor because it carries the emotion of the track where the beats and the psy sounds add to the rythm of the song and those are what make you move.
