I found a good resource for music theory + composing: university material

http://www.ocwconsortium.org/

There's a movement for universities to put their stuff online for the public. Search the courses field for "music", "composing" etc.

Here's a more specific link for MIT uni:
http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Music-and-Theater-Arts/index.htm

The Open Learn uni also has lots of good stuff.

While I'm at it, definitely check out the book "Music theory for computer musicians" by Michael Hewitt. Great book, a bit like the ravenspiral guide.

can anyone upload the raven spiral guide again for download? i cant find it on the net anymore...

its good to see this topic up again, we should talk about music theory the same frequency we talk about ``making a psy bassline``

[]`s           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``

This is a pretty cool beginners guide focusing on the bare essentials of music theory, but written in an idiot proof way with listening examples. I wish I had read this when I tried to learn music theory, and not started with a book on music theory written by a jazz guitarist...
