Actually FM theory is not part of music theory.
U can get a very good FM theory summary in the faq section in www.psy-forum.co.uk production section

well thats a book
and not users opinions
and was written by the man who discovered FM synthesis and invented Yamaha DX-7 ...

and there no synthesis topic to post this
so ...
download the pdf and read it

dont advertise UKish forums
its not part of music theory either

Which scale or mode do you guys usually use in your tracks ?

For me it's often minor scale, harmonic minor or phrygian mode...
Also, i'm often lazy to compose in another root key than C or F, do u think working with for example Ab as root key would be worth it ?           Psy stuff : myspace.com/neyaprod

hey hugaw,

I played 7 years Keyboard (with teaching offcours ) and have no clue about scales and chords^^ only a few.

Listen to your heart.
I did root keys in D, Ab or B or whatever sounds good.
It makes your music sound special and not like every other track with the same scale over and overused.

Here is root on D i think. Listen to my new song (Out of Regularity) --> http://www.myspace.com/tributesound

Its a very special scale, no clue which^^ Maybe anyone can tell me?^^
Give it a try!!

dude ytou got ripped off !
7 years and you don`t know the basic stuff?
i teach guitar and well... all my students learn these things if they`re 7 or 17.
i`m not saying you have to know theory. but it just speeds things up. lets u understand what youre aiming at faster, gives you more options, and the most fun part : it gives you a whole new set of rules to break

from my experience there are some keys that work better since the bass works better . but i think that part of the whole "everything sound the same" problem in the scene. ppl dont use all the scales because they want to have the biggest baddest huge bass... and its not so easy getting it on all the different scales.
if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

Hey^^
I am better at playing what i've heard... But offcourse he teached me about some Cdur or Amol and such stuff^^ But i cant tell you how a Cmaj7 looks like.. I cant BUILD CORDS only with the NAMES.. :/ only 2 or 3 cords i can tell you without looking anywhere.. thats a shame

Must learn them again^^

well, its supposed to be easy for you... since you probably know the theory in your fingers you just dont know you know it.
it shouldnt take you long to learn basic theory. you just have to make the transalation between your ears fingers and mind. start reading.....
you`ll probably find yourself playing and going wow so thats what im doing here...           if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

hmm not really...
i only can play 2 or 3 chords, like C and Am and hmmm.. F maybe, i dont really need it. i pick 3 or 4 notes and look if they harmonise together.

its really a shame^^ as i played from 5-12 keyboard and then 3 years playing guitar and was good at it. now i stopped playing instruments (exept synth's for sure )

its hard for me to read all those page's mentioned on this thread, its all in english im only can a better school english (life in switzerland)
