learn circles: C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. in mayor and minor modes (at least).

learn scales: minors, mayors, diminish, augmented, chinese, pentatonics (mayor and minor), melodic minor, harmonic minor, blues and chromatic.

learn modes: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian.

learn all the intervals.

learn rithyms: salsa, rock, blues, jazz, folk, funk, etc...

learn and try to understand the meaning of the word "groove".

recomended instruments: guitar, piano, drums and bass.

And always remember! Less is More.

i forgot...

and learn the subdivisions of tempo singing with the word "da" (berklee technique), for example:

1/4: da, da, da, da
1/8: dada, dada, dada, dada
1/16: dadadada, dadadada, dadadada, dadadada
Etc...

in a very slow velocity --very important-- u can start with 60 bpms

is hard to explain like this but if u check your "secuencer click" u will hear what i mean.

1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128 in straight, triplet and dotted modes.

another good advise.. "if u can sing it, u can play it"

cheers

There is a lot of stuff which may or may not apply to psy but u can skip the stuff which offends the psy zealots.

i think more people should do everything possible to 'offend' the psy zealots in my opinion the reason more psytrance these days is really stagnant is because people fit within the same rules... get out there and experiment, find something different and try to innovate.

music theory is important for ANY music. what i find valuable is knowing the rules so that you can write within them, but more importantly so that you know how to bend and break them to create something interesting and your own style.

it's also very handy to know, when you hear a melody or interesting composition, WHY it works, WHY it sounds good.

thanks for the links everyone, some great info!

For beginners I recommend Talc Tolchin : Learn the Essentials of Piano series on DVD.

Even if you're not learning how to PLAY piano, this will teach you the basics of notes, scales and chords.

As he explains in the very beginning of lesson one, you have to start from the basics. Then learn each part like you are building blocks, soaking in a new bit of information each session.

If I may add something to this is...exotic scales, untradicional harmony, freedom in expresion, nothing is wrong unless you say it is, disonance and untuned chords it NOT wrong at all. Of course if you want to make some jazzy, classical or whatever genre you of course need to know something about it.

from reading lots of posts here i could see that many people have interest in scales and how you make them.
i decided to write a little post to shed some light over this neglected subject. music is art and art means freedom. but music has certain RULES, which when one knows them, they grant even more freedom. some things will never come to some alone just like that because we're not yet used to the sounds of different, "exotic" scales. that's why sometimes we hear musicians, for example pat metheny or even joe satriani and we say something like "what the HELL is that guy playing". well, it's not only scales, but here i would like to explain how scales are made and just to bring a few examples.
when you learn them, their application comes as second nature. our ear is normally very used to the major, minor, pentatonic maj/min, harmonic minor and the phrygian mode (or the spanish scale) a good example for phrygian would be that yalla beitar song - where there's a trumpet making a melody and than everybody scream "OLE"
first it's the construction of the major scale. this is where everything is coming from. aswell as different chords- all come from the chromatic scale, counted from the root.
ever wondered what a chord like cmaj7b6 means? or c7+4? or how a a#m7b5 sounds like?
we only have 12 tones, but thousands of ways to arrange them.
c major scale - c d e f g a b (c) - do re mi fa sol la si (do)
in the major scales there are 7 tones (the 8th being the root one octave higher)
but in music we have twelve tones-
c c#/bb d d#/eb e f f#/gb / g g#/ab a a#/bb b
# means one semitone higher than the note (diaz)
b means one semitone lower than the note (bemol)
now, any scale has a root
for example, f major, root is f. c major, root is c.
for a major scale, we need to take the 12 note chromatic scale and count steps and from that conjugate the scale.
the steps are:
w w h w w w h
w means a whole step (two semitones)
h means a half step (one semitone)
if we take the chromatic scale of c:
1. the root is c
2. a whole step from c is d
3. a whole step from d is e
4. a half step from e is f
5. a whole step from f is g
6. a whole step from g is a
7. a whole step from a is b
8. a half step from b is c again, one octave higher.
if we take for example, f as a root and conjugate the f major scale we get the following tones:
1. root is f
2. a whole step from f is g
3. a whole step from g is a
4. a half step from a is a# or bb
5. a whole step from a#/bb is c
6. a whole step from c is d
7. a whole step from d is e
8. a half step from e is back to f.
that means, f major - f g a a# c d e and back to f.
from the chromatic scale, using the step rule we conjugate any scale in existence. always start with the root and count the tones on the chromatic scale.
now i will write down some important scales, each with an example in the key of c.
remember, w = whole step (two semitones), h = half step (a semitone), 3 for example would mean 3 semitones, etc.

c major scale:
wwhwwwh c d e f g a b c

c minor (also called the dorian mode) scale:
whwwwhw c d eb f g a bb c

c dominant 7 (or the mixolydian mode) scale:
wwhwwhw c d e f g a bb c (just like the major scale, only the b note becomes bb, that means- lower the 7th degree by a semitone)

c major pentatonic (also becomes the a minor pentatonic, same notes, only start to play the scale from a instead of c, don't ask me why it works right now and just accept it. it will be a bit complicated to explain why it works at that point):
ww3w3 c d e g a c (the scale has only 5 notes, also called the "blues" scale when played as a minor pentatonic. penta=5, many guitarists are just stuck on that scale for years in a box on the 5th fret)

c bebop dominant (now that's a JAZZ scale.. i'm writing this for fun)
wwhwwhhh c d e f g a bb b c (has an extra note- because in chromatic bebop jazz scale tones have to fall on the downbeat so it has to be symetric)

now some interesting stuff:

c spanish or jewish scale:
h3hwhww c db e f g ab bb c

c lydian (joe satriani uses it almost exclusively, the lydian mode has that kind of airy, dreamy quality) scale:
wwwhwwh c d e f# g a b c (when playing scales which are modes, we don't start from the root note anymore though, the emphasis must be on the mode)

c phrygian or real spanish scale:
hwwwhww c db eb f g ab bb c

now for some of the most interesting sounds:

c half diminished (or locrian mode)
hwwhwww c db eb f gb ab bb c

c diminished (8 tone scale)
whwhwhwh c d eb f gb ab a b c (i love that one!)

harmonic minor (j.s. bach, malmsteen -
whwwh3h c d eb f g ab b c

well, those are all just scale examples. but its all has to be played with context. normally, what you'll want to do is to switch major/minor/pentatonic scales at different roots, like a rock player.

Very interesting man.. but u have to thought that MOST PEOPLE who are makin eletronic music HAS NO ideia or interestin in musical theory. ( bad for them )

u problably play some instruments right ?

But man... that topic is a FULL PLATE to experimentation. With that kind of knowledge u have plenty of option to try to archieve something more psychedelic ( see the topic " Thoughts about responsibilty, psycedelic music and emotion " )

and well..cant put more information in here coz its very complete

just to say that each kind of scale archieve a different feeling for us.

minor scale can give kind of a sad feeling
major scale kind of a happy feeling
minor dominant 7 scale can give kind of a SINISTER feeling.

Experiment those scale in some MINIMALIST tunes... and open ur senses to see what feelin it can archieve to u.
