if you mean the ni audio kontrol 1;

i got it. it sounds nice in my opinion. looks even nicer.. also it's quite handy.. if it works..

but; it's usb.. in my case, it took me about a month to get rid of all the problems (crackles, every few seconds, regardless of latency settings), and the very main solution; deactivating the cd/dvd drive (which sucks, i always have to activate it if i need it in the device manager and deactivate it again when i want to work on my audio stuff..).
i work with a pretty new & fast dell inspiron notebook..

the ni-support (supporters and forum) was completely useless. i used to describe my problem in detail and from the answers it was obvious that the supporters didn't even really read my *detailed* description (which they themselves explicitly ask for)..

a firewire interface might cause fewer problems..
but once the audio kontrol works, it's a pretty neat piece of equipment

good luck

Hi friends, I hope you can help me a little here.. I'll give you all the info I can, so you can advice me abouth which audio interface I should buy, considering this PC and muy budget, that is US$300 max. If I can spend less, better! more budget for other things and get started.
I know I could buy the M-audio Audiophile 2496 for US$100, but I'm not sure if I want to go for an internal soundcard (I've hjeard external are betters, and that there are better options than M-audio, but i'm just an influenced newbie hehe), or should I consider this option since I'm just starting and I would not take real advantage of a better soundcard? Maybe i wouldn't tell the difference the first year or so!? Maybe there are noticeable differences..well, you tell me.

I want a GOOD and stable audio interface. I don't know if firewire or pci/pcimia. I hear your comments about this.

I want to produce music, especially psytrance and chill out. I don't think I'll use microphones or instruments for the time being(apart from the midi synth/controller), but I think I will in the future. I'm just starting, so I don't need an atomic audio interface..I want something to get started, but not something mediocre.. I want something really good and that won't be "small" for me in 6-12 months.

This is the PC i will buy:
motherboard:Intel DP965
cpu: core 2 duo e6420 2.13 Ghz
RAM: 2Gb 667
HD: seagate 250 Gb 7200rpm
OS: Windows XP

I'd use a controller via USB.

I'll appreciate your help! I need to know it as soon as possible because someone is going to bring it to me from USA. Any tips of good reliable online stores in USA are welcome too.
Post your opinion and help here!!Thanks

hey trancedelux,

if you won't use external instruments / microphones, and if you don't plan to work with a notebook in the near future, you might easily go with a pci card for the beginning.
i started with creative soundblaster audigy 2. i got quite low latencies, so i was happy. and it costs like 60-70 USD as far as i know. my first album ("mystical encounter") is completely produced with that card, and i'm quite happy with the result (you can listen to extracts on http://www.fiin.ch - just look under artists for "human"). i never had trouble with the card, i think it was very good to start with. the only "drawback"; you can only work at 48.0 khz with low latencies, not at 44.1 khz.
i hear the e-mu 0404 pci is quite good too (with that you can work at 44.1 khz with low latencies as far as i know), and is only a little more expensive than the audigy.

maybe that information helps..

good luck!

Hi Human, nice tunes..
Well, I do want to buy a notebook in the near future to use it for internet and that stuff.
Comparing the soundcards your are mentioning and the m-audio audiopihile 2496, which one do you think is better?
Any firewire or external interface anyone can recommend? thanks in advance

I don't understand your requirements, except the price: what kind of work do you want to perform with that interface ?

I mean, if you only need it for MIDI controller's input and then to stream its sound into the console/amp for monitoring - it's one thing,
and if you want to use it for live 14 track recording, it's another....thing

SO, what do you plan to do with this card ?
what work scenarios ?

I don't want to record a band... I want to produce electronic music at home, using only a midi controller/synth, sequencers, vst's, etc... eventually I would like to play live (a psytrance live act). On the other hand, and once I'm more used to this gears, I would love to add real analogue instruments to my songs... I guess I'd need more inputs on the soundcard to do that... That's it. I don't know what else to say..Please tell me if you need more info. Thanks

Thanks Trancedelux

i don't know the m-audio audiopihile 2496, so i can't make any useful comments on it.
for my live act i got the native instruments audio kontrol 1, a usb interface. it's pretty nice, but i had serious troubles at first with it, see my post above (page 18). i'm sure that the problem was not the interface itself, but the fact that it's connected via usb.. the e-mu 0404 is also available as external device with usb (check their website). as mentioned above; once it works, the ni kontrol is quite nice, but if you have the choice, i'm guessin' that firewire will cause fewer troubles than usb..

good luck!

I've bought a PRESONUS FIREPOD...
Nice firewire soundcard for the live act.
No complains so far, good card, not so much money...8 outputs + master stereo + booth stereo, 8 inputs, with very nice preamps.

Thanks..
Now, anyone can recommend the audiophile 2496 for my first daw? I've read many good reviews on other websites, but i'd like a psy-producer opinion.
is it an audio interface or just a soundcard? will I need to use a mixer along with it?
Please heeelp

audio interface and soundcard is the same thing with 2 names!

the difference is that soundcard usually refer to pci cards and audio interface to external firewire/usb cards!

i dont like the m-audio it has bad drivers!

in that price i would recomend terratec phase 22 http://www.thomann.de/gr/terratec_phase_22.htm

emu 0404 http://www.thomann.de/gr/emu_0404_digital_audio_system.htm

esi maya 44 http://www.thomann.de/gr/esi_maya_44.htm

these are all in the same league as the m-audio
for better sound and more i/o u need to spend more!

Hi! Thanks for the explanation...
Now, things have changed a little.. I decided to give priority to soundcard and monitors, so I'll buy a PC with lower specs, and with the spare money I'll buy a better soundcard and monitors. Now the soundcard budget has rised again to US$250-300.-

I can wait to build my PC, but i can not wait to decide which soundcard i'll buy, because someone is bringing it to me from USA, and I have to buy it soon!

Frambonas said he is using a Presonus Firepod with no problems..that's over my budget, but I could go for a Presonus Firebox ($300), altghoght the reviews at www.zzounds.com are not good at all!

I hear your comments and I send all the best to the people that have spent time here, answering and helping, thanks!
