I would recommend anything made by RME; it’s well known that Steinberg and other big names use these cards on their test machines. Steinberg also has a hand in making the software for the RME cards. They work without any problems and will not stop you or limit your work. http://www.rme-audio.com/
Another good pick would be to buy the Access Virus TI and use that as your soundcard, as well as for your synthesis!

If we speak about audio cards I think that nothing compares with Apogee's ensemble.
But, if we speak 4 digital audio... Dudes WEISS rules...
JUst AWSOME!!!
PS: I wish oneday to process a 2 track with DS1 mk2 |

The above post describes my dreams , so back to reality...
As a friend said @ the 1st post of this thread , some infos would be usefull for all the users.
So from my little experience period Iw ould like to share some things with u...
1st of all, as a great mastering engineer says don't be complertely a bithead... In other words don't forget that the talent and the inspriration is the most important part in the production chain.
2nd when we judge audio gear (such as an audio interface or A/D-D/A convertres) we should judge them in an as much as possible flat way. Wich means (for a souncard) flat reference monitors (not my behringer headphones 4 example), a good quality recording/mix for playback and in a "acoustic propriate" room ( a good studio's control room is this place).
3rd Don't get laughed by the companies, marketing tricks. There are not all audio interface neccessary, in the same level 4 all. For exmple Rme Fireface 800 is a very good interface, but with MADI (digital audio protocol that transfers 56 or 64, depending on the type , channels of audio simultaneously) wich is useless to most of us... So if you buy this, you pay all of the functions that it supports, regardless the fact you need them or not...
4th How to check your needs?
-Make a plan of the gear you use or you plan to use in the earky future (4 example if you would never use Pro Tools, the Digidesigns' audio interface are useless to u. Or if you don't use any equipment from Tascam, or other manufacturers that support T.D.I.F. you would not need this protocol.
5th Acording to the money that you wil give the more earch you will have to do before you will buy something. If I am going to buy an interface that costs 200 euros, I don't have to except very flexible I/O for exmple. So as much money you give as much strictly you ought to be.
Some specs you will have to checks re
Sampling rate : 96Khz max are very good for music production and recording of electronic music
S/N ratio @ A/D-D/A: 105 dbA is a good starting point 4 low budget audio interfaces
Drivers support : check the soft you wil use, what drivers work better with it. 4 example cubase works better with ASIO 2 but Gigastudio need GSIF drivers.
THD: as lower as better
of course frequency response has to be 20h-20khz
Last as much info you can obtain for an interface, the more high quality it shoud be (of course if the info/test is reliable and has "good" outout)
so if possible check for jitter mesurments and alliasing frequency messurments...
I hope I helped all the trancers a bit...
Keep it up. Your ears is the most reliable gear!!!
PS: some equipment that I am sutisfied
M-Audio (very good ratio of value for money)
RME: high quality converters with very steady drivers and clock cirquits (MADI is also a cos)
MOTU: very flexible I/O with lots of digital I/O s (SMPTE sync is rare to be seen in audio interfaces)
Metric Halo :the Mobile I/O is used a lot 4 messurements, so its converters are very reliable
Benchmark Audio: Dac 1 is a cheap D/A if you consider its awsome performance
Apogee: If you have the money, forget all of the above |

ill add to ur list some thingz!
1st price doesnt always measure quality but usualy something over 1000e is better than some thing that cost 200e
2nd some audio cards have great specs in paper but have bad drivers so they are unworkable choose usualy something that many uses and its well known and tested
3rd its lways good to have an extra audio i/o in ur card i know it can cost 100e more but it will be one time that u will need it and its a shame not to have it!
4rth for a quiet oudio out to ur monitors/mixer prefer audio cards with balanced outs
5th vsti instuments depents of the quality of ur audio cards out and the speakers they are fed into!
equipment im satisfied...
cheap and still working like a dog - esi neon
very good performer with superb sound and a good price - terratec phase x24 fw
extremely good value for money with excellent performance and specs - motu utralite
and ofcourse the allmighty RME products!

Hey guys & gals...
I'm getting a Notebook next week in order to set up my Live Act..
One thing I still need is a Soundcard for it. Since I am not satisfied with the Soundcard I currently have on my Desktop-Computer, I thought I'd buy a USB 2.0 card so that I can use it for both the Notebook and my Home-PC (I don't have a Firewire 800 input on my Home-PC and can't afford a "PCI-Firewire - Converter-Card")..
I don't really have much money to spend. I know, however, that the E-MU 0404 PCI card is pretty good for its (rather low) price. How about the E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 card? Here's the link;

great, thanks a lot man!
is it true that when you for instance have a usb-mouse, that you could get clicks with the usb-soundcard whenever you move the mouse? can't quite imagine, but some guy in another forum told me that this could happen..

Hi Brothers and Sisters
im on a pimp my DAWSystem Trip &
i have buyed a Marian Trace Alpha Pci Soundcard a few days ago.
Features:
1*stereoanalog 1/0 (24Bit/192 khz, balanced)
via mono Klinke
1*Stereo Digital 1/0 (24Bit/192Khz)
via chinch
3*Midi Output/ 1*Midi Input
Digital DSP Hardware Mixer
tdm TDM SyncBus(if i need i can sync to another card;)
I have heared and read the best from bevore I Ordered them it should be quality like rme ...and and and... My result by Playing my Projekts is that it sounds verry good much dimensions better than with ac 97 on board The main characteristic of the TRACE series is the newly developed high speed hardware architecture, which guarantees data transfers with ultra low latencies and practically without CPU load. I think it was a god buy with a cheap price. What did you think over this?

(Marian should pay me 4 this-pm me pls:)
