i have the tau pro 2, and have messed around with it a bit, noe should i be sampling it as audio when i get the sound close on a note or 2? because as you know the velocity really changes the sound and so no velocity is very possible using just the synth unrecorded. maybe im listening for the wrong thing when trying to program the tau but always sounds warm but with a messy top to me. if you like you could post an examkple of your preset vst settings for a bass sound on tau so i can have a better staring point? thnx

nice section , first time i see it
well..... when u say bassline u need to understand its not only the sound of the bass that counts... if you want good sound in ur track u need to make a good mix betwin the kick and the bassline.
as for the synth's/plugins ect.... you can make great bassline from almost anny synth there is.... dont be afraid to put effects on it... like quadrafuzz or doing eq .... (that was just an exemple) .
alltho there are allways favorite synth's

some inside stuff:
reaktor: Photone all kind of elite bass, juntik for electro bass.
junglist, scorpion and hydra have great bass
sytrus nice bass as well
tau 1 ,2 and tau pro, bass line (aoudio realism)
Try this at home: take trilogy, search the tb 303 preset , put on it 2 qudrafuzz(its a kind of distortion) but dont touch annything on the quadrafuzz exept the eq on the left..... play with the sound on the trilogy and play with the eq of the qudrafuzz untill u hear good mix with ur kick...
should be elite bassline for Psy or Fullon

my thought about bassline:
playing bass direct from the vsti with realtime plugins on the channel is not good enough.
I record my bass to audio and then edit it to fit precise.

it takes a few minutes more but it worth it.
check it!

- Novation Basstation
- Roland TB-303
- Access Virus
- Elektron Sidstation

(and not necessarily in that order)

Basstation is a wierd synth and we use it for bassarpeggiomelodic thingies, quite recognizeable on a lot of or tracks.

TB-303 is, no matter what other ppl thinks, the best basslinemachine. We use it all the time, if only for a extra "bwau" hehe

Virus could be altered with any similar synth like Vanguard or albino, but theres something about it....

Sidstation is a unique sound great for deep and dangerous basslines. Also good for drum n bass.

yes.. it's indeed not what synth you use that is important.. it's more important how you use it and how you PROCESS it..

Bass is most of all just a pretty simple saw waveform, eq'd to fit in the mix and processed to get those nice Subbasses !..

I think it's also quiet important to have good speakers/monitors so you'll hear what you are doing..

A lot of speakers do some awful things with your bass before it reaches your ears .. be ware !           ..- It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception -..

Novation Basstation SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSS
Roland TB-303 SUCKSSSSSSS

both have strange modulation in their oscillator while playing midi [real time].

damnit!

someone should make some good instrument for bass something with stable oscillator like the Vb1 and with lots of options like lfo few sliders etc...
the one who will do that, will be a little bit richer and very famous

The Problem is that, all the basslines synth (the good one) was created for other music style.
psytrance need really stable oscillator, quality filters and punchy quality .

and i didn't find The One!

so till someone will make that multi ultimate bass synth, we all have to know how to EQ and Compress more than just perfect! and do it again and again till we will make hole in the studio chair.

I'd really like to see a TB303 model with a MIDI input. Care to show me?           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

Hahaha
Ironically, bassline is about the only capacity in which I can stand the 303, if some tune starts in with one of those long, repetitive 16th note arpeggiator parts with a slowly opening/closing high resonance filter sweep, my knuckles turn white, my teeth grit, I start screaming REBIRTH MUST DIE and spitting and I shut off the radio in order to calm down

The 303 lead is the single most cliche sound in the history of dance music and it is really uncanny how angry it makes me to hear it in new music

Slomi mentioned the (original) Roland TB-303 that doesn't have a MIDI input. It has a CV input that you can connect through a convertor to MIDI equipment, but no native MIDI support.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

A 2-part guide to programming basses that I posted in another topic:

http://www.darksonus.com/articles/analog_bass.html

http://www.darksonus.com/articles/analog_bass2.html

Another one on the same topic:

http://www.futureproducers.com/tutorial.php/id/42

I also recommend http://www.psy-forum.co.uk whose production forum has probably as much discussion and advice on BLs as Isratrance's.
