this thing with logics master fader is still bugging me

I think now that it doesnt really control all channels...when I drop an effect in the output channel, it shows me still clipping like when the masterfader would be on 0db...

so this seems to me like the master fader sits between the effects of the output channel and the output fader, what wouldnt do much sense to me

anyway, I dont use it now anymore, cause it doesnt bring anything if you just lower the volume after the summing...I really wonder why its even there when it does exactly the same as the output fader

maybe anyone got a clear info about that?           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Try this m8..move all your faders in your project as loud as possible...so that they are clipping..then lower your masterfader and you will still recognize the sound of that clipping..just with less amplitude...for example in cubase 4 you can work with 32bit floating point..therefor its almost impossible to get the program in clipping on digital site...but as it comes to the output your interface is usually limited to 24 bit so you will definatly hear some artefacts..

the master sits right at the physical outputs ..and think about it...try this..insert izotope ozone or any other analyser in your mastersektion..pre fader then you start your song and you will maybe see that the signal that runs through it is clipping even if your masterfader is at right level...so thats the actual level of your mix in ozone...so you will even hear the diference when your mix is not clipping in ozone and you should lower your mix for about -6 db if you want to give it to mastering..hope that helps a bit..and hey man btw..come back on msn!:)

haha yes I was in stress with our exams, but now its done

yeah I recognized this with logics multimeter on the output channel...but I still wonder why there IS a seperate master fader if its just the same as the output fader?!?

EDIT: oh and about that 32bit thingy...its still not good to clip there, cause afaik the signal can even clip at the D/A convertion if there is no digital clipping recognizeable in your host (called "inter-sample clipping")...but you can simply control this with inserting ssl x-ism on your output           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

I'm quite sure it's for multi-channel purposes (panning etc.)

ok, finally I got myself to grab out my logic manual

so the master fader is the last instance of logics environment, and its main use is to control the volume of all output channels at once...for example when you're mixing in surround, or using other outputs for external fx or so!

so yes, its after the output and its baad to turn the volume down with it

but to prevent yourself from dumbyness, get your output in solo-safe mode by holding ctrl and click on the solo button...this way u can fuck around with your master fader and it wont affect anything           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Hey Andreh,

have you ever tried surge from vember audio, its not quite a substitude for discovery but still a nice synth capable of freaky fm....only the lfo routing is a lil difficult in the beginning but otherwise its a very cool vsti...and available and working on mac too...

have fun

a little tip for all logic users:

if you re using esm for your bassline, try to write just one long (1/1) note and above it a few 1/8ths where you want to put the higher notes...then go to the environment, create an arpeggiator object, set it to 1/16th and route it to the esm channel-strip...then tweak esm a bit and process it like usual...works like a charm and sounds much better and more fat & round imo

hope this helped some of you!           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

I forgot to add that you need to bounce it in real time then, cause the arp cant work with offline bounce           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Can someone tell me how to send midi data to my keyboard from logic 7.2? I can record live into logic through my soundcard (ultralite) and I tried opening the external instrument option on the audio instrument trak and writing some midi notes, but my keyboards(NL2) not registering them. Thanks

I`m a bid out of logic..but as far as i remember you have to set it up in environment..or did it work before?

best think will be to have a look in the manual..on how to integrate external synths..its like you have to create an multiinstrument..with those 16 midi channels..but its kind of necesary to do that..so read about to do it proper...or maybe any logic users may help you here or in the logic forum..

good luck           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-
