I have 1 time only gone into the red simply because the sound engeneer was so retarded. He didnt wanna turn up the sound, so i turned it into the red and eventually he turn up on the amp because he was affraid i was gonna blow his system.
I wasnt the only one asking him to turn it up, organizers and audience. You could stand 5 meters from eachtoher and speak.. 1st and hopefully last time i will have to do this.
If sound is too low call the guy with the PA dont just crank it up and ruin the music, unless you meet a twat like this.

God bless the music           http://crackwhoremodels.dk/dainty_doll.html

It depends on the mixer, the DJM-600 has a whole six red lights, and I think it only actually clips once you reach the very top one.

most trax go into red when the gain is set at 0db, it doesnt mean its clipping, or is 99% of all trax bad mastered or what?

I can go into the red quite alot on my mixer without the clipping

Here is another story a friend told me: He was doing the PA for a massive hardcore rave in the Netherlands.

DJ Gizmo was playing and had everything turned up on the DJ mixer and of course, everything was clipping. My friend walked up to the DJ and told him to turn everything down. The DJ would turn things down a bit but quickly return to his ridiculous levels and my friend had to tell him to turn it down again.

After a few times the DJ said it wasn't loud enough and to fuck off. (This was another 80 KW sound system and it was indoors).

My friend was fed-up so he just turned up the 5KW DJ monitors to full blast. Apparently the DJ jumped and scrambled for the knobs and faders as fast as he could to turn things down. The rest of his set was fine.

haha nice!

why not just make the booth monitor louder and louder and give the DJ the sensation its loud enough...

Cheers.           "....or is it???"

I was thinking maybe get the DJ to sign some liability form before doing their set.

Something along the lines of: that they understand that red lights may cause damage to the system and they will be held for responsible for costs and their name posted on a hall of shame list on the WWW.

its not that hard to analyze a waveform and its been tried on equipment with clipping indicators as well

But i suppose it depends on the equipment, i mean, some mixers would clip even in green
