Hey all..

i was just woundering what all you people think about more and more mixers having build in BPM counters and all .. i think its really LAME because i find no purpose in using one.. unless you canot use your ears to beatmatch, but then, in that case, why are you djing? lol.. for the look?? for the women?? for the reputation??

I see sooooooooooooooooo many Dj's that use the BPM counter.. even well know artists use them.. And i find it sad that some even RELY on them...

Companies should NOT have BPM counters on mixers or cdj's.. can we stop this?? hehehe..

well, I think this time you outdone the 'who is the best' type of thread...

Dumb notion, to begin with - BPM counters are not an accurate tool, but this anarchic-anti-protesting post is just like the old 'CDJs are so lame, they make the work soooo easy...'.
Clown, are you using CDJ or Vinils? if u use the first, then you are probably as lame as the DJs who use the BPM counters.

and now back to some serious reply (I hope you understand that the above text is cynical):
The BPM Counters are useful when you want to know the general 'area' of BPM in order to narrow down the search for the match. it does not, however, replace the need to use your ears and skill to perfectly match the BPMs.
It is a mare tool, just like Jog wheels, mixer effects or turntable's spin-rings - it can help a DJ at his work, but it cannot replace the skill needed to do it.

This is a similar discussion to the "Laptop DJs, "Vinils vs CDJ", "Progressive vs Full-on" - as long as the crowd is satisfied, who cares what you use to make the flow go?

just as the name suggests...           auspexx@compact-records.com

The logical answer....

The problem is that when a DJ *depends* on the bpm counters, they will eventually encounter a mixer that does not have them. Then there are likely big problems.

I think it is better to first learn how to beatmatch without bpm counters. Then if you happen to find yourself in front of a mixer that has them, then use them. But they should never be a crutch.

The cynical answer....

Don't be such a lazy fuck - learn to beatmatch for yourself! It can seriously be learned in about a month or two of practicing. It's just not that hard. People are just in too big of a rush to get in front of a crowd and look for any shortcut possible.

i think it's okay to use them...

BUT if you can't mix without a bpmcounter, then you shut go home and turn it off and practice to mix without it! like krelm sayd "they will eventually encounter a mixer that does not have them. Then there are likely big problems."

and its realy yasy to beat match imo. use your years

But for newcommers i think its okay to use the bpmcounter...

i got some Pioneer 1000, and theres a bpmcounter in the cd player, and i think its okay.. i dont use it, but its good to have

The dangerous thing is that now we have deejay building their sets according to the Bpms written on the famous "Dj sleeves" ... And don't even try to choOse a track according to what it can create when played together with the previous track..

Just a succession of same tempo "Hits" (unreleased if possible) ... Nothing more.

And then those guys think they are funkey..

Go and listen to some Techno, Drum'n'Bass, HipHop, Big Beat, House deejays... And learn from them !

i find them a bit irritating because it is quite hard not to look at them, and if they are on a mixer you are not used to using how to turn them off? and they are out most of the time. my ears work fine for me           >>love will tear us apart...<<

Anyway, when you're djing, you're supposed to know your tracks...So that moment the bpm counter is useless...Just "informative".
I use it when I receive a new record and I want to know the beat "area"...But honnestly, it's easy after a bit of practice to recognize the range of the tempo by the hears...
And for beatmatching, If you begin to be very carefull about the LCD numberz always changing and jumping, you're lost.....

So imo: bpm counter: general information
Hears: perfect beatmatch

i did NOT read all the views in this thread....but i quite frankly find it quite irritating that ppl want all things real hard! they don't accept changes that easily....why?

im sure when CDs were first introduced there must have been some discussion in this same forum (atleast if this forum had been around for that much time, i'm 100% sure there would have been a thread titled "About the Compact Discs")...same way, why use mixers at all?

why use computers at all?

heck why use the internet and post on this forum??

i'm going back to the caves
