I decided I may want to learn how to DJ mix

Can someone explain, in bright and simple words, how to do a beatmatch?

Thanks.

aaah i can tell you how _i_ do it, others may have different ideas.

there are essentially two steps to beatmatching tracks

i) getting them playing at the same _speed_
ii)getting them playing at the same _time_

briefly: the first is effected using the pitch control on the cd/record deck, the second using the jog wheel (on a cd) by physically moving the record (er.. on a record )

seeing as i have no idea how to mix with vinyl (ok i have an idea.. i've just never sat down and done it) we stick to cd from here on in.

detailed:
i) to get two tunes playing at the same time we assume you have one live and the other one you are monitoring through headphones..
a)find the first beat in the tune you are going to mix in.
b)set a cue point here
c)press play approximately as the live tune is starting a bar
d)judge whether the track in your ear is too fast or too slow and adjust the pitch appropriately.
hopefully you get the tracks playing at the same speed

ii)now you use jog wheel to get them at the same time..

in practice i usually find out which way my tune is going out (too fast / too slow) by using the jog wheel in (d) above..

when you have both tracks at the same time and speed then you have so a beatmatch

good tip for cdj's
at 140bpm (standard trance tempo) 0.7% shift equates to pretty much 1bpm .. by being good with your seven times table you can get very very quick pretty accurate speed adjustment.. you'll mix like dino in no time           >>love will tear us apart...<<

great stuff guys, their are loads of stuff about production but it seems to be lacking on djing, perhaps some more tips on how to mix (as a dj point a view) would be nice, IMO it is easy to 'mix' on the end + beg of tracks but knowing some of beatmatch and other stuff would be nice           "Great things are only possible with outrageous requests." I think each one has his own method. For me, DJing requires being very concentrated. when i have the cue in the first beat (not necesary the first one) i try to listen to the outside track (the one that is sounding for the ppl). when i have really "catched" the groove, then is when i try to find the correct speed of the inside track (what im earing by the headphones). BUT... DJing is NOT doing a beatmatch. Is much more. Beatmatching is what should learn the beginners. Is when you can do that when you really begin DJing...

Good Luck and patience...!!!

If you want to do long mixes, like 1 min or more, you will soon realize the tracks will start to loose sync. So you have to make little corrections every 20 seconds or so. It is very easy to do this, even without a trained ear - remember the 0.7% rule.

At 130-140 bpm the difference is 0.6%, at 140-150 bpm the difference is 0.7% and from 150 up the difference is 0.8%.
As a trance track normally is between 140-150, you can do this:

If the track is 145+ bpm, then the small adjustments are made by rotating the jog to the right; if the track is 140-145 bpm, then the correction is made by rotating the jog dial to the left.

These are very small corrections... if you abuse them, you will lose the mix!

not so mate.. if you do the math 1 bpm difference is: (1/130)*100 approx 0.8% at 130 works out as 0.7% at 140 (and maybe 0.6% at 150 though i never play that fast)

i say forget whole 0.6/0.7/0... thing and find a proper beatmatch for every specific track, there is alot of tunes tht done at 138.5 bpm or 129.7 bpm. after long enough practice u will not need any shortcuts, just proper dj work.           Believe your soul !

well eli, i actually disagree with you mate.. i think it is very helpful as first approximation and then you fine tune it.. ie adjust from initial .8 or whatever to get exact lock for sure.. anyhow there is more than one way to skin a cat (as they say over here ) and more than one way to get your records in time

The .7% rule is only needed while you're learning, hopefully your ear won't need that in a few months time.
