some news, the mic arrived!

made some testings...
i cant hear a big difference between the fostex fieldrecorder and my soundcard + preamp... very clear.

the micscreen is a big load of shit and i wont use it,
especially because my room sounds more pleasing.

next time ill try recording some heavy metal riffs!

yesterday i worked on my movie-music project, some nice orchetral sounds etc...
i decided to add some metal licks and recorded them with the mic, from a very small guitaramp
http://www.thomann.de/de/behringer_k450fx.htm

i recorded each riff 2 times and layered them (one left, one right channel).
nice fat sounding, ill post the results in few days

this recording stuff is a whole new production feeling, it feels very nice to add some more personality to any track xD

sorry for raping this thread, its like my diary^^          www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

LoooooL just got my Focal Solo΄s!
no damage, even the beryllium protectors where on!
im sure they wanted to f*ck with me the first time...

sound in comparison with yahmaha hs50.
just listened to some music that i know well.
first impression, VERY big bass. somehow a better
stereoimage (can this even be?), i noticed more detail
in the mid/high area.
this known "harshness" before they break in, i didnt notice until now.

measurements coming soon!

cheers

one question about the measurements...

zork told me i can use this omni thing mic:
http://digitalaudioservice.com/tr-40.html?SID=ba47a7661c3e1b0dfce8d5f88f3a9252&___store=english&___from_store=german

my mic has also such function, but i dont know...

Multi Pattern 1" Condenser Microphone
The NT2-A carries on the tradition forged by the now legendary RΨDE NT2. A professional large capsule (1") studio microphone incorporating three-position pick-up patterns, PAD and high pass filter switches conveniently located on the mic body.

At the heart of the NT2-A is the Australian designed and manufactured HF1 dual diaphragm capsule. The frequency and transient response of this transducer has been voiced to complement today's modern recording techniques, and yet still evoke the silky smooth character of the legendary microphones of the 50's and 60's. These features provide the flexibility and superlative audio characteristics that make the NT2-A one of the most versatile condenser mics available.

* Large 1" (25mm) HF1 gold sputtered capsule
* On body control of polar pattern, HPF and PAD
* Three position variable polar pattern - Omni, Cardioid or Figure 8
* Three position variable High-Pass Filter - Flat, 40Hz or 80Hz
* Three position PAD - 0dB, -5dB or -10dB
* Ultra low noise, transformerless surface mount circuitry
* Wide dynamic range
* Internal capsule shock mounting

Power P48 (48V) phantom supply
Acoustic Principle Pressure, Pressure gradient
Directional Pattern Three position variable - Omni, Cardioid or Figure 8
Frequency range 20 Hz - 20 kHz
Output impedance 200Ω
Signal noise ratio 87 dB SPL (A - weighted per IEC651)
Equivalent noise 7 dB SPL (A - weighted per IEC651)
Maximum SPL 147dB SPL (@ 1kHz, 1% THD into 1KΩ load) (157dB with PAD at maximum)
Maximum output voltage +16dBu (@ 1kHz, 1% THD into 1KΩ load)
Sensitivity -36 dB re 1 Volt/Pascal (16 mV @ 94 dB SPL) +/- 2 dB @ 1kHz
Weight 860gm
Dimensions 209mmH x 55mmW x 55mmD

what setting should i use (omni and -0dB with no HP filter)?
or should i better use another mic?

cheers

orgy nice set up man, do you enjoy the sound of the focal?

have you tried to put them less close from the wall behind?could be bullshit but from my experience you better get closer to the monitors than the monitors to walls .

your desk may contribute to that big peak at 150,but not sure you measurment are correct, it seems lot of db for some dip and peaks .

what you can try is open a synth load a init patch , use a sine wave ,make a note in the sequenceur and loop it ,look at a analyzer and pitch the sine on the synth to try notes from maybe 30 to 500 hz to check the low end(but dont use pitchbend just chnage the pitch mannualy trying all notes ) just to check the freqs and note than have dip and peak so you know where to be carreful when eqing and adjust tha amount of db needed .

yeah its much more pleasing than the hs50m.
as i told, it feels like i got a better stereo image,
also somehow i can hear reverbs better,
you cant compare the bass...
but i have a littlebit this feeling that they are consumer speakers...
much bass, less mids and average highs.
but i think thats just in comparison with the hs50m,
i dont know other monitors xD
first time i listened to my psy track and the kick came in it nearly blows me away^^
i think i will use the monitors eq and take out some bass.
EDIT: -0,5db LowFilter feels a little bit better.

there is 1 meter distance to me, and about 0,4 meters to the side and rear basstraps from the monitors.
i cant change a lot, because i also have to live here.

i tried a littlebit with whitenoise, and it shows the same result as roomeqwizard in the mids and highs,
not much improvement with moving the speakers or mic.
thanks for the advice, i will make more testings next time, but for now my energy is sucked out...

cheers

i know what you mean with the consumer feeling but it can be a advantage cause the sound is more pleasing and at same time detailed and translate good.

your mix were already ok , they should be even better when you get used to the monitors but you should keep the old one,use them for a/b .

Orgytime,

Now that you've had a little time to get used to the Solo's, would you say you're happy with your purchase? Do you feel that they have adequate bass or do they need the Sub 6 as well?

I'm thinking of getting either the Solo + Sub 6 or Focal Twins. Not sure which one will be a better choice. The price is almost the same for both.           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

i have read only bad things about twins low end ,it seems they don t shine for that part of the spectrum ... i heard just the solo and they are ok but same the low end is not their strong point imo like most monitors in that price range.
