Harmonic mixing has been key lately for my mixing. Sure that means I can't just pick out my most favorite tracks and hope all goes well. I have to pick out the best tracks that work together harmonically. I bought a program called Mixed In key. It scans my music folders then adds the key and BPM to the ID3 tag. So I know what tracks work together. With psytrance it's all about having to be creative to make your sets sound smooth. sometimes I wont mix in a new track until the outro if it's long enough, so you have intro mixed into outro. Or sometimes I mixed into the breakdown. Or mix the intro into the last phrase befor the outro so that when the kick and bass start it wont be layered over the previous kick and bass but over the outro of the previous track. I'll say this: Know your tracks well and plan ahead.

Dark trance DJs dont care about mixing tunes together. They just trainwreck the fuck out of everything, its the style and the whole breaking the rules thing.
Goa Gill does it all the time. He is the best DJ in the genre.
Dont generalize maybe the ones uve heard dont care..
there are some who pay very very close attention to ensuring that even the most minimal of sounds are mixed over in a smooth transition.
some tracks arent made with the intention of being a standard 4/4 that wud be easy as 123 to mix. especially the hi-tech, idm, glitch, breaks influenced psychedelia. you just gotta find the right pieces of the puzzle that fit together. plus technology has made it much simpler, with all the effects etc u cud add while mixing.

If you're already playing the tracks at a gig you're getting paid for (or that is furthering your DJ career) without permission from the artist, how is editing the track without permission any worse? (assuming you don't give out your edited version)
I don't know if this thread is still on topic or not, but:
People don't make music for DJs. Anyone who does is useless as an artist (imo/sorry).

Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?
there is actually many many artist (who are often dj's themselves) that make tracks dj friendly. I don't think it makes the artist worse at all. He/ she just makes it more likely the track is played by dj's and thus heard by the public.
Doesn't change the fact that you're catering to a specific group of people instead of doing exactly what you want to do.

Unless making dj friendly tracks is exactly what you want to do...
Yeah, but..uh..

Absolutely.
I just make songs, those songs are (for me) artworks who need to be just as they are. I don't add anything in the beginning or the end just that DJs have an easy life.
In my opinion many DJs have forgotten that a DJs purpose, the art of DJing, is to play good music so that people can enjoy it. It seems that some DJs think that DJing is about mixtechnique. They want to stand up there and demonstrate their super mix technique. Some DJs, if they can't mix a song beat on beat they just don't play it. But do they realize that they actually steal the people the chance to hear a good song? They defeat the art of DJing.
If a DJ can't mix a song beat on beat is either a bad DJ or he should just, for the sake of the song, let it run out and find another song with a good beginning that fits and create a nice new break.
Sometimes DJs really make me angry... I see DJ standing up there orgasm-faced turn the eq knobs, playing with FX over the music that has carefully be balanced and created by musicians. They stand up there and show off with the work of others and all they need to do is pick songs and mix them.. and now they come and want me to make my songs different so that they can mix them easier??
To put it in context, he isn't even a comedian..just a hardcore punk vocalist (Black Flag) that always exaggerates like that and is way too opinionated about any subject in his spoken word stuff. Would you find it funny if you didn't know that dance or electronic music went anywhere beyond guys like Tiesto?
Totally off topic anyway, but SCM's comments reminded me of that video..
