Hey Pox - You drunk !
Its been like, ehhh, 4 years since I played for a crowd - Before that, I djed on and off from 1995-2000.
I can say that I never played a track I did not like myself, actually, I would usually go for the tracks I like the most - unless somebody else had played them earlier that night.
Now, for your question. Do I play for the crowd, or for myself? Actually, I consider myself part of the crowd (just with the ability to select and mix the music)
As far as possible, I try to listen to the same music as is being played, when I got the next mix planned I go and enjoy the music along with the audience.
When mixing something that isnt planned out, I found that it also helps getting the set into a much better flow.... Just connecting with the music and feeling your way thru it. Thus creating what you might call a really wicked set
Nowadays, all my mixing is done at home, which is recorded and played at small private parties. The drawback is you cant read the audience as you go along (+ you dont get to be famous and all that), the benefit is that you can sit an talk with the audience + feel the flow evolve yourself. Ive learned alot that way, and I still am. Being able to put yourself in the dancefloors shoes, is for me, of the highest importance.
To me, a DJ spinning popular tracks which he doesnt really enjoy himself, is nothing else but an organic jukebox set on "random"... Theres nothing artistical about it, no personal touch to the flow of things, just random. Also, I dont think the "popular tracks" are really the ones who people in the end like the most, they are just the ones being hyped the most. I hate hype !
Surely most DJs have grand egos, and love the attention they get when playing. DJing is a lot about balancing things out - tracks, mixing, personality etc to a state where you are able to please both yourself and others, thru your own style and succeed in doing so.
Regards
Krell
PS.: Respect to all the musicians creating all this beautifull music for us to mix and enjoy! |

mostly I play tracks I like... but sometimes in the middle of it all I will remember a track that I might not like so much... but I know it will fit in well at that point so I will play it....
the thing about good tracks and bad tracks.... I really dont think there is such a thing... sure there are good tracks... but every track has its time and place... even the 'best' track played at the wrong time might be really bad... and even the 'worst' track played at the right time might be perfect... for me its not about the tracks, its about the flow.

Sure there are good and bad tracks. It’s just a matter of taste.
A good track can get even better played at the right time, but in my opinion a bad track will always be bad – regardless of when and where it’s played

i see what you're saying... but i'm talking about good and bad in terms of taste....
for example you might think a track is bad because you dont like it... but I am sure there is a time and place that it can be played that would have a good effect on the party.

If you DJ just for yourself, why leave the house and play at parties?? for your ego?
you are playing for a crowd of people most of whom are high and sensitive to the music, and you have to lead them with your music into some magical place. so take your Dj mission seriously.
but only play tracks that you like.

i'm laughing of your opinion... my opinion is that you can take dj clown in the hand and go play at home, were you play music for the crowd and dont have BPMcounters..
you are saying that djs who dont play for the crowd shudt stay home?? maybe it's just you a clown who need to play for the crowd, because you have so shitty taste.. the crowd diggg my taste..

i play for myself and thats why i think im a bad dj..
i dont care if the people dont like the music i play as long as im having fun
i play sets that i want to hear myself at parties, if someone dont like it so its his problem cause thats my music,
if they like it then its making it more fun, but i wont play music i dont like just for them to love it.
i just play with the hope they'll like what im playing
