what makes a track "psychedelic" ?

I hear this word being thrown around a lot. I consider all psytrance to be psychedelic, even cheesy full on psytrance. IMO different styles have varying degrees of what I would call "psychedelia". IMO forest psy would be the most psychedelic style, followed by dark/hi-tech, then psytech, full on and prog psy are about the same. That's not to say not having a lot of psychedelic sounds is a bad thing. Prog psy doesn't need to have too many "psychedelic sounds" due to the driving nature of the music.

pads and synths with lots of modulation and squelchy sounds are what I feel make a track more psychedelic.

So how about everyone else?

Its defined by how high the producer was when he wrote the track.

But seriously in the end its all subjective just like every form of art.
All I know is that there is nothing psychedelic about people telling me what is or not is psychedelic in my mind.

Could'nt ever answer myself that question...
It's strange but feels good           Tudo que é melhor e mais superior em mim saúda tudo que é melhor e mais alto em si

I would definitely say that forest psy is about 15 % more psychedelic than dark/hi-tech which are in turn probably about 30-32 % more psychedelic than psy tech. I've always thought that psy tech was only 10 % more psychedelic than full on, but full on has to be 70 - 80 % more psychedelic than progressive with the variable being attributable to atmospheric conditions.

I'm joking, of course.

What an absurd thesis. I hate so called forest and dark psy, it gives me a headache and puts me in mind of teenage goths who aren't very good with girls, sitting in front of their computer churning out "really psychedelic, non commercial shit mannnnnnnn" on Fruity Loops. Therefore it is not a type of music that I would wish to form the soundtrack to any psychedelic experience I undertake and thus in as much you can say it (which i don't think you can but anyway...) I don't think forest or dark psy are psychedelic at all.

I don't know what hi tech is.

I feel fairly ambivalent towards full on and psy tech so I guess progressive psy trance is the most psychedelic for me as it the most likely to get me to have a dance and lose myself in the music.

But I think that's all horse shit as I don't see how you can attach a rating system or formula to "psychedelia"...the only thing that is genuinely psychedelic, in my humble opinion, is an hallucinogenic experience and any human attempt to mimic that through whatever medium is doomed to failure.

So to answer your question...none of those sub genres are more psychedelic than the other as "psychedelic" can only be in the eye of the beholder. Some people might even find someone like Elton John or Phil Collins psychedelic...

I'm sure you can create psychedelic music based only on mathmatics and music harmony without having ever a mind expanding expirience, as well as it is possible to play on an instrument one single note which is more psychedelic than a complex mind tickling arrangement.

Btw Phil Collins is great Father of sidechaining multi instrumentalist and great composer impo

The most psychedelic albom for me will be 'Ummagumma' by Pink Floyd. Timeless.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

The listener.

One of the reasons psychedelic trance is not psychedelic these days is cos that ridiculous word 'psychedelic'. Ruins any possibility of magic and discovery.
btw, for me, pink floyd has never ever been psychedelic. It's just slow kinda boring rock music. (but then again my taste was abrasively shaped by early sabbath )

But I do know what they are...I have to say though that I find the distinction between "forest" and "dark" to be somewhat nebulous.

It is "hi tech" that I am unfamiliar with although I am sure it is equally hard to define...

Psychedelic means different things to different people, just like dark and forest mean different things to different people. They are subjective terms and trying to define them is an exercise in futility.

YOU make the track psychedelic by putting yourself in a receptive state of mind.

If I'm sick and tired and strung out, even my most favorite music in the world will not be psychedelic, and on the other side of things if I have a head full of acid and I'm in a receptive state pure Silence can be the most psychedelic thing going.

I was listening to an interview with Benji Vaughn last night, and something he said struck me really hard...that so many people are desperately trying to be psychedelic and not just making music for music's sake. Desperately trying to be trippy...no wonder so much of 'psy' music these days is boring and stale.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe
