What is this new DARK psy trance all about?

Most of the DJs in my area play very dark trance. Fungus funk, Grapes of Wrath, digital talk are some names I've heard mentioned.

it's filled with grim sounds, harsh noises, and
no melodies. Dark like "The Lone Deranger" or Etnica live i can groove with...but this new music is totally different..

For me it is not an enjoyable way to party. I don't find it to be more psychedelic or 'hardcore' than melodic full-on. I just think it's "noisy" and a bad trip.

Even Goa Gil..who used to play artists like
Koxbox or Pleiadians...now has gone for this very dark sound almost exclusively.

Is this an EVOLOUTION in sounds...as the dark lovers claim it is? Or is it just psy-trance sliding downhill and turning into something gothic and horrible...losing it's spiritual power.

my question to you..is...:
What is this dark new music all about? What kind of experience is it supose to invoke, is it suposed to be fun/enjoyable? How do you develop a taste for it?

I still don't understand why do you call fungus funk, grapes of wrath and digital talk - dark.

to me they all sound like another fullon...with some different twist in the sound area basicly...

is there something dark there that I can't seem to hear? anyone plays this fast bpm music at night in the dark - maybe that's why it's called dark....

about ur evolution question.... u will say it's sliding downhill..... and some other ppl will come and yell at you that it's the best music and that you don't understsand anything. So no need to even start...

I agree with trip-:

There are a lot of artists now heading into this direction of dark sounds that in IMHOthey just cause a bad trip. For example: Parasense and Xenomorph. I prefer the groovy, happy, morning tunes yet full-on style.           See you on the Trancefloor!!

IMO, I like (especially outdoors) to have the contrasting forcs of the dark scary music in the night, and have more uplifting melodic tunes in the morning. You said you prefer morning music, but do you want to hear what you call morning music all day, all night and all morning? I think the contrasts also highlight the power of the so called 'dark' sounds and of the morning sounds. It tells more of a story and feels like a journey to me.

i totally agree with u dude...
u need a mix of everthing in a party
if u dont like dark stuff head to the party at dawn and listen to what u like.....
there is no sliding downhill deal happening
some people truly like dark tunes and find parasense to be great (not me)

As in art in this scene the music evolves on the abstract side, so people who dont live in abstract world dont respect this kind of music, they like it the usual way "melodic", as it is all up to personal taste. The thing with the abstract is that people can feel it in their own way in their own world, so this abstract sound as non defined, non melodic simulates different surroundings which every individual accepts it according to his spirit and state of mind.

take more acid! ha ha just kidding really!
Genres of music constantly evolve and split, just because there is a split in musical styles doesn't mean the old styles die out... in my opinion there are two seperate genres of music emerging out of psy trance today- the more traditional psy and some newer, way twisted, psychedlic sounds. There are no rules saying we all have to like the same kind of music
Just because a music style is called "dark" doesn't mean it is devoid of spiritual meaning (and conversly just because it is light and fluffy it doesn't make it spiritual!) dark music challenges you and really reaches into your brain and plays around for a bit before it spits you out in the morning and then u feel like u just accomplished something... and then you can bounce around to some lighter stuff and smile til your face hurts, but for it to be a real journey you have to work for that moment (Goa Gil's epic adventures for example)
and i could really ask the same question of you. What is the deal with all that new cheesy psy (housey, formula) stuff coming out in the past years? what kind of experience is it trying to invoke? where is the spiritual power there? because for me it just makes me want to drink heavily to drown it out. how do you develop a taste for that? I hope you hear the sarcasm here...
as for the debate about dark v. light, isn't that getting old? Can't we just accept that both light and dark music exists and one is not necessarily *better* than the other because taste in music is subjective??
bottom line is if you don't like it don't listen to it. make your own genre! mwah ha ha
(come on u knew the m.o.e would have to comment on this!!!) oh yeah, where do u live, i'd like to come for a party, mwah ha ha, yay for gothic horrible!!

As a fullon fan, I can assure you that this "dark" music has no relation to fullon

Dark, Light, it's all part of the same whole, the best parties are the ones that have all forms of psy, be it light, dark, melodic, progressive, full-on or whatever you want to call it..           Turn On, Tune In, Trance Out!!!

I agree with ChoBo here... Russians are master in this darker genre. And to me it's just good music anyways. The more diversity in styles we have, the better. I mean, do you really want to listen to old school goa ripoffs all day?? I know I don't... Hehehe... by the way, for all you people that like dark, noisy and twisted, try Jocid's album entitled ' Jocid ' which is out on Doof Records. Man, that guy knows the vibe... hehehe
