C Major = a in its natural form. It uses the same notes

So "a" (Lower case for minor) is the relative minor of C (uppercase for major)

The C Scale for performance purposes can be

C Major
c Minor Natural Lower the 3rd, 6th and 7th half step (In other words set the E A B flat)
c Minor Harmonic Lower the 3rd and the 6th
c Minor Melodic Lower the 3rd when ascending and lower the 7th, the 6th and the 3rd when descending

@offthenutbutton...

accoring to what you are saying (and i kinda know it too but havnt played my saxaphone in many years)
but a shift from a C to A-minor would be killer (or is C and A-minor actually identical)
If so... then C to A would be the actual shift... and it kinda be the equivalent of a minor shift (e.g C to c minor) ??

C to Am would sound really cool. They are not the same because the home tone of the scale from which the rest of the notes are relative is different. when you do your mix. say a bassline in C riding under mids and highs in a minor would add energy to the floor most likely (assuming the percussion is complimentary) because of the consonant harmony created. C on top of C minor would sound awful if the tracks are somewhat melodic because they include many discordant notes. However if you do a short mix and modulate from C to C minor that would sound interesting, like a chromatic scale.           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

Perhaps I should clarify... Mystic Revelation is an experiment in mixing between keys rather than remaning in one. They're all minor as far as I know, and the mixing is supposed to be through "perfect fourths" or subdominant key changes, beginning in C-minor and cycling through every minor key, all within a 2 BPM range between songs (140 - 146 BPM overall). I was trying to explore whether this combination would emphasize the melancholic, dreamy, and spiritual sounds of the original material.

I label it an experiment because I never received any schooling in music theory, so I don't know (aside from what my ear tells me) just how accurate this is. Anything I think I know I've just picked up from my own research in the effort to better myself as a DJ. While I often see informed DJs writing about music theory and harmonic mixing on forums, I never was able to find an example of a harmonic mix in all my searching, so I set out to create one myself. Whether I managed to succeed or not isn't really something I can be the judge of I mention this because I don't want to be taken as the expert on the subject - I'm still learning! All I really know for sure is that some of the mixes I made in Mystic Revelation sound really smooth to my ears... but I'm still waiting for some detailed words (in private) from someone with a background in music theory.

Now back to your regularly scheduled discussion

I think it is much more valuable understanding the structure of both melody and rhythm, in the sense of the classical Indian music. I don't see the point of filling psy music with harmony and counterpoint. I am always on the floor side, btw.

I think in music, like in any other aspects of life, the more knowledge of diverse cultures... the better.
