comments from certain people led me to believe that not everyone really knows whats happening on stage during our trance parties. i think a topic like this where everyone can participate and explain another angle of it could be beneficial to us all. why? because for those of us who exactly know whats going on and feel dumb/scared/silly to ask can find out. why else? those of us who know some things can always know more and lastly - those who know can be reminded of what should be going on in accordance to the spirit of our scene . (i feel like d. rumsfeld asking and answering my own questions)
in the end the more educated and intelligent we are as a culture the higher our demand for qulaity will go and thats always a good direction. ill start by covering some of the dj aspects - next person can go onto live shows and their knowledge of it, or whatever - you get the point.
dj sets - usually invloving 2 (or more) cd players hooked up to a main mixer. what actually happens is that the dj is taking 2 tracks and connecting them, or - mixing them together to create a continuous flow. the mixer has the basic features of volume control per track channel, an eq for high's, mids and low's per channel. a general gain for the mix and another one for the headphones/ monitors. some mixers have other features like looping a short part into the internal memory of the mixer, some have fx such as flange and delay or reverb on them... mostly those arent used though in our scene... more for other music. the cd players themselves have sometimes fx on them, but again - those are seldomly used.
what is happening - one track is playing at full external volume while the dj is looking for the next one to mix into it. it is a creation in the sense that the dj has the ability to maintain certain energies if the mix is smooth and the result is that a "new" track is created that blends 2 or more parts of the tracks into something new.
whats not happening - there is no creation in the sense that everything is premade since it all comes from the cd and cannot be changed. music is not being written on stage, music cannot be altered unless a new track in mixed in.
how to verify - the dj must be changing cd's... if they arent - they arent mixing and the cd is being played only on one of the cd players of an already made mix - set time will also most surely be below 1h20min time since that is the length of 1 cd.
both, (or more) channels have to be all the way up at the point of the mix- this will prove both chanells have input and are being mixed.
feel free to correct/add more info

gadi , specially with the cdj's 1000 , you can play with memory cards also. i saw a guy this week playing with them , so sometimes maibe you guys wont see the dj changing cds , if it is the cdj 1000 check on the left bottom side of the front of the cd to see if its a memory card , and yes they can also play a mixed set via the memory cards and it can last more than 120 minutes since there are memory cards up to 1 gb of memory . |

I did not know the memory cards could be used to store music? Is it pitchable on the card? |

yes and faster than the cd and the response of the wheel is much better
for me it seems that memory cards are better than the cds itself |

"if they arent - they arent mixing and the cd is being played only on of the cd players of an already made mix"
Or if you want to bust a fake J, get a pair of binoculars and focus on the fader. If it never gets moved from the full L or full R position, prepare the rotten tomatoes, tar and feathers |

if u are talking about the crossfader - then no you are incorrect about that assumption. i keep it in the middle since and even disable it since i mix with the channels and not witht he cross fader. cross fader is used in hip hop alot...

Is the crossfader not popular in psytrance? I can't think of a set I've played in a long time where I didn't have to fiddle with the mixer and turn it on when I step up. I use a blend of both channel and fader mixing - depends on the style and what I'm doing, really. More channel mixing for the smooth gliding progressive, more xfade for bangin' crazy shite.
The only assumption I'd really want to cure people of is the matter of whether I'm free to have a chat while I'm spinning... the answer is never yes. I'm perpetually fiddling with something or trying to sort out what to throw down. Especially when there's three decks... no shortage of stuff to keep a guy occupied when that's the setup!

cannot imagine someone going up to play and faking it, ie. playing a premixed set, what's the fun in that?
also, i have never touched the crossfader, unless the person before me was using it and i have to move it to the middle

only when im feeling jiggy with it do i ever touch the fader. Far too many mixers (almost everything except Raine mixers or Penny & Gilles x faders) has that annoying dip with output when you cross the middle.
I prefer to just use the levels, and if i want to do a cut just do it there. It does help audio quality IMO
and a premixed set, ugghh, no excuse for that...
but i do find the idea of someone else (with recognized good taste) picking out music for the dj amusing. Adds a bit of a challenge, just kinda spices things up...

i have used both cross and channel faders the cross is only important when you dont have two hands to blend as if you were fiddling with the eq while fading err sumthin
as for live i dont think you can really know whats going on most of the time. like what was dino psaras' setup like? he mostly tweaked knobs on that massive mixer I couldnt figure out the workings but then others you can see them hit a key or twist a knob and hear the results like shapestatic there are too many different live setups to give a general answer.

So these memory card mixers, how much can u store in them? A whole track.. or just lil bits and pieces.
Reminds me, wouldnt it be cool if more dj's stored interestin samples and included it in their set at specidic times.
