Point being: adapt your mixing style to the style of psytrance you are playing.

this sums it up
but i think there is a red line which all subgenres have in common and that's the pauses...if you end your mix in a pause you will always keep the flow in it

I think it's perfectly possible to let tracks run at the same time, if you've got the right track and you punch it in at the good time it will sound good. offcourse this doesn't apply to all tracks..
just use enough time at home to come up with combos

never in my life i saw so much discussion about the work of a dj like in the trance scene.coincidentally i never saw so bad djs like in the trance scene...let me tell you, some of you concentratte in so many crap and peripheric subjects that you mmtend to forget the main subject....music

for that its boring to play to an audience mostly constituted by smart ass hum "djs",that are analysing every movement of the dj,any song(quality, mix, etc)instead of dancing anbd feeling

YOU ARE THE MAIN GUILTY BY TRANCE BEING IN THE SITUATION THAT IT IS

well, to learn i guess u need to listen and while listening you are analysing the mix, the track and the quality... so why not discuss it and share knowledge?

Or do you prefer to dance to senseless trainwrecks? Its not a very good feeling imho.. Maybe its just me, but i prefer good technical sets with a good flow.

btw, what situation are we talkin about and what cj's are you talking about??

cheers

What are some (actually, many) DJs doing while a track is playing (apart from mixing)? They seem to be constantly turning and moving something on the decks, pushing buttons, etc...
Adjusting the the sound? Every 5 seconds?

no, they just pretend every 5 sec. they have to look busy. otherwise after their gig they will have to open a forum and see the visitors complaining about the fact that they have been financially cheated at the last party .

i dont observe the djs any more. actually not sure if i ever observed them. i hear. i dance. connected to them in another level. but i dont really observe them. well, if it is really attractive i can also observe a little bit but not often. this is a sacred party and not a bedroom anyway. i mean about the attraction, better not observe too much. i throw a glimpse now and then, just to see if they are there at all, or are they gone to drink a beer to the nearest table, i mean, i throw a glimpse to see that they are with us. but just for a second. it is nice to see that they are travelling with us. because many are not. they come play and go. it is their job.

what is very true about djing, you wont notice a good djs job well done, until a bad one comes

or the opposite.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

I dont get why anyone who is DJing would have to make sure they look busy all the time? I mean people know you are just spinning people's tunes, all you need to do is cue tunes up and mix them in. After that all DJs are busy with, is dancing...and maybe some classA intake, although drugs are bad for you mmmk?

it actually takes some effort to have tunes run along eachothers for some minutes.. not just cue and mix, allways have to make some pitchbending, cueing, gaining and then we have the fx aswell

for sure you can cue and mix, but how fun is that? just senseless imho.. speaking for myself, i try to keep them trax running side by side aslong as possible to still gimme time to find the next track and cue and still be able to make a long mix..

so i guess there´s a difference in dj'ing and jukeboxing

by saying cueing I mean that you've selected your next tune, matched the bpm in your headphones, and then simply cueing back to where ever you are going to start mixing when the other tune starts ending. depending on the style of trance you play you can have 2 tunes playing along for a long time (even 3 decks if you are into techno/tech house), but for me its about finding the good tunes and then seemlessly mixing them. I pretty much always drop the next tune about 64 bars in when the main beat and bassline drop clean. about 32 bars of mixing in sound good to me to keep the floor moving.
then i use all that free time for dancing

1½ minutte mixing, 4 minuttes preparation, 1½ minuttes mixing... thats what I do, more or less, always a bit different.

While the 4 minuttes, the track plays without me touching the sound people hear, instead I put on the next track, set the cue point and pitch. I also start the track, to test how the EQ knobs affect the sound... Depending on how well I know the mixer, EQs are not all the same.

I might also get a feel for how much I need to pitch bend the track, depending on CD players and BPMs. Theres a dynamic to every mix, which I might want to explore.

If theres nothing for me to do, I turn down the music in the headphones and save my ears and try to look at the people dancing, in an attembt to gain energy from them and perhaps exhange some smiles (Im shy, so this is the hard part for me).
I might also drink some water, talk with sound people or organize my cds...

Most of my knob turning is done during the time where I mix Mostly I get a feel for the EQ very fast.

of course i resonate. they do a great job to sit there and sweat while i am dancing and smoking. sometimes i am truely pity and concerned about their fate ( destiny).

but if they just pretend to do something , and to be busy, and many do that, i am more laughing than being concerned about them. it is fun. like the topic in the producing section about the lives, it was such a fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think i could save some money to go to parties instead of going to amusement cirkus. and with the party experience a person can actually easily know if they do so much at all or are they just putting the tracks.

but of course i resonate with them. btw it is a fact that the resonance can be powerful if they move themselves too. but i am not the sort of person to be with open eyes at the parties. i travell to far. cant afford to watch them, because then i will have to observe also 30 different visitors at the party that will rather put me down from the trip so i close my eyes.

I guess it would depend on what type of dj your watching in reference to what their doing. What type of decks are being use? Some decks limit the boundaries of a dj. Keep in mind a dj is an artist as well and always plays LIVE with more risk involved in making boo boos. Pretty much no different than someone who writes their own music when on stage. In most cases, people make a big deal about live artist vs. dj's and they both start by pushing buttons and end the same way. its a dance culture, not look at the artist/dj, that's what jam bands are for.

I personally use 4-6 decks to spin with so I really couldn't tell you what most standard dj's are doing beside twirling their thumbs. Besides, its about the music and not the artist, why care what their doing, just dance.

I guess as an organizer you might want to care if a writing artist is playing live since they charge more money to pull their laptops out.

When you mix two basslines together at various pitches with other kicks and such its mixing. I disagree that your playing other peoples tunes. If so then your not mixing. Once you start to mix its your tunes and your the LIVE artist..

yeah... techno, d n b, hip hop etc. on 4+ decks is possible but for psy? maybe if you areplaying minimal and proggi style but nothing else, it would just end up messy!           I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!
