You touch the sound when you mix it, then you leave it be, because the tracks are usually produced to perfection in the studio, so all you can do is degrade it or change its intended continuity.

The Dj is not the musical artist who changes the music, he is the flow and presentation artists who serves it to the audience.

I tend to find this is the best way in many cases... with modern psytrance the music does not respond well to the kind of heavy EQ usage you see with DJs playing other genres. Too much playing around can sound bad. However, there are ways to make it work--harmonic mixing is handy for this purpose. One can blend two tracks together, weaving the percussion in and out, layering melodies, and if it's done right--it doesn't even sound like anything is being done at all.

Of course it all depends on the style of psytrance you are playing... cuts and tricks work well for full-on, while long mixing suits the deeper side of progressive. In each instance there is something for the DJ to pay attention to in between selecting the next song, setting cue points, and such matters. When I am doing long mixes there are times where I have less than a minute to get a track out, slide the next CD in, cue up, and start the next mix. In other cases, with longer songs or in cases where one must wait for a late break, idle moments can come along... but I find they are infrequent. I am not usually fiddling with knobs but the fader can see a lot of action and programming a set takes more time than most people realize. It adds up. You keep busy and the time can pass quite quickly. Some people ask how I manage playing for 3 or 4 hours at a stretch and to be perfectly honest, sometimes I hardly notice... there is a lot to do

Hehe, last gig I played I only had an hour. I barely got started by the time the next dj started preparing his stuff! Like I blinked and it was over...           .

tssssss thats a new delhi approach for you mate...hehehe

Yeah as someone said nice topic, i started mixing long time back, not to be a Dj of sorts but to have fun...but with due cource in time i understood psychedelic music very well and i think you should know the tracks well before you play on the decks, ofcource this is applicable for shorter sets, i personally mix twilight/full on trance, and usually i mix on Virtual DJ pro a nice tool for mixing better then traktor i suppose, and i usually play a lot with faders, EQ and loops, but sometimes i get lost in a thought of "what should i do now" ? should there be a loop of 8-12-16 what but i guess it personal, but hey read the posts here and i must say its really interesting to read people's view and idea's

@squirm bro >> ill send you a mixing software soon, its has a inbuilt headphone soundcard.

I personally prefer this approach to some DJ trying to add crazy effects to my favorite song on the dance floor! I'm usually jumping around myself after I've mixed

Very well said, couldn't agree more & that's exactly the way I like planning my own sets

the famous Junya's "Live Act"

I thought Eskimo went out as a "live" act rather than a DJ - and there's plenty of live acts that just press play on the CD player/laptop- as least Eskimo jumps around a bit - which is more than most...

(A friend DJ'd before a well know Scandavian "live" act a year or two ago and ended up pressing play for them as they couldnt work out how to use the CD player - sadly he didnt get their fee!)

But what is constitutes a live act is a whole other debate...

now back to DJs

Also when Track A is playing, you can cue Track B and spend some time beatmatching it on the headphone only for training purposes.

Don't you hate it when somehow you lose the beatmatch after practicing for a few mins?
ffs!
