DJs are modern shamans. What are they doing up there? Calling the spirits

Nice topic, thanx Krell for the feedback.           [ cuBe ] :: cubeg.org •

Let's put the question like this:
What [what bad things] can happen if the DJ mixes/starts a track, adjusts the sound [it should take about 10 seconds] and does not touch the sound AT ALL, until it is time to mix the next track?

DJ wise usually nothing, and thats what most psychedelic trance djs do.

You touch the sound when you mix it, then you leave it be, because the tracks are usually produced to perfection in the studio, so all you can do is degrade it or change its intended continuity.

The Dj is not the musical artist who changes the music, he is the flow and presentation artists who serves it to the audience.

For me, it is helpful to keep that in mind.

However, I am open to other Djs manipulating the music, its just that I never felt good about it - Even if it was done skillfully, i.e playing live percussion over the music.

In the end, I just felt like I would rather have experienced the tracks as the production artist intended.

Ive always wondered what they were doing too, as a dj myself I could never see exactly what they were doing. EQ ing doesnt take THAT much effort!

Personally, IMO, a DJ presents other's music, and now and then adds a touch here, a 'wah' there, a 'jet' over there. Just as a bit of emphasis, and never too much, personally I try to use FX as little as possible.

My goal is to make a clean mix, which IMO means that the dancers won't realize that an hour or more has gone by already. Like a liveact, sorta, no apparent stops in the music, and no too-obvious changes in the sound. And if I hear an opportunity to add a bit of my own flavor with FX, and tastefully, thats cool too.

As Krell said, the producers have cleaned and polished their tracks already. They knew what they wanted when they made their music!

On a bit of a note regarding playing instruments over the tracks: One of hte coolest sunrise sets I ever saw was a dj, and a didjeridoo player manipulating the didj sounds digitally (thats a lot of 'didg' in that sentence!). Done well, not to the point of drowning out the dj's tracks, it can be amazing.

But, if there's a damn drum circle going during an indoor set, and the damn hippies get louder and louder, thats just annoying...           .

there is tons of stuff to do while playing as long as you are creative enough.. jumping back & forth, playing with the eq, pitching, adjusting, adding efx, preparing the next track and bla bla bla... there´s no end

I find with Tratktor I don't end up doing much with my chill sets-I suppose I have a funny style because while do fade mixing mostly I mix short, like a DJ playing house might..but it works. I tend to fiddle with the EQ on the big mixer more then anything on Traktor.

Im not trying to bash hippies, Im just sayin... Be courteous... ANd too, Im relating an actual experience... An auditorium, which echoes, with terrible acoustics, and a system that's taxing the power resources already, that's not the place for a drumming trance...

There are many different ways of mixing music.
You generally do not mix rap like you do with disco, house or trance....

In the goatrance world a litle change happenned when most djs left their DAT for the cds...

The "art" of a house or teck dj is all about his tecnic and can represent far more than 50 % of the artwork of the set, mixing short patterns of lots of different records, using some simple sounds of 2 or 3 records in the same time, adding some samples loops etc......

In goa trance, the tunes are supposed to be far more complex & rich than in other style of electronic music, which should lead that the "art" of the dj is less about his tecnic of mix and more about the choice of the tracks he plays, and his ability to pass from 1 track to the next 1 without being to much noticed...

In most of electronic music, djs should be good & famous for changing a lot the music they play and kind of creating new tunes with the original ones they play,

in goa trance, djs should be good & famous for changing as less as possible the tunes they play and present them in the best position as possible to the audience, and of course having the "freshest/ killest / newest" tracks of the best artists of the moment !!!
..... the same job with different visions and methods.... cause the music is different (or should be

so as a funny conclusion : most of electronic music djs are all about star system and personnal ego and goa trance djs are all about modesty and altruism !!!!
.... not the case ?

Hey nice topic

It depends on the kind of music u playing on decs 1st ,, dj who plays house music really hve fun .cuz they have a longer time to mix the tracks ,,, in psychedelic i dnt think one shud mix more then( 1min )a first break of the track ... thats y most of the artists just play with kik n drums in the begening And i feel every psychedelic track is a story n full of surprises ,,so shudnt miss it ... ,, and thr are lot of things which dj has to work on the decks,, 1, Keep track of what he is playing n how people are reacting,,,, 2, Has to be v fast on thinking of what u have to play next.. n keep a track of the bpm ur playing ,n ya sometimes cd's skipp also ( that moment is the worst for a dj --- almost a mini heart attack ....but gud dj's manage to handle it fine ,, but at the other end ppl r yelling at ,,thats not fair ... then while playing a track u have to mix the other one ,,, n in that u keep adjusting ur eq's as per the other track ,,cuz everytrack has it own level of output ..and all of a sudden u see a person walking to dj for a request or smthing ,,while talking to him u need to keep the focus on ur mix ,, not easy my fnd .MOST OF ALL ,,, u have to keep looking bak for the COPS ... cuz we r the 1st one to be CAUGHT ,,NOT UUU ,,HAHAHAHA

Just play the damn records . I like DJ's that pick a good tune and don't use filters on the master channel every 2 minutes. And hell, what's the point of looking at a dj? Sounds like a hip hop culture thing where it's all about attitude and style.

No... no more scientists, no more laboratories, no more experiments, I thought you`d be able to understand that. No more!

Why isn't more Dj's playing around with the knobs on the mix-table? Why are you people so afraid of creating a twisted adventure out of this world. Why do you love the generic approach so much? What’s wrong with some mind bending spice??

when dj , i have alot to do.

first thing is to select next track , takes minute to go over the case and watch the dancefloor mood

make sure the channel set correct after all twists from the track before - eq , gain , fx , i might do it by the rythm altho it got nothing to do with the actual sound

then listen to the track and set cue point and pitch (this takes minute or 2)

then i have to listen carefully that bpm matched perfect , this will help to mix longer and better.

then smile to the peaple*

then have some beer *

then listen again and start the actual mix , can take from 10 seconds to 1 minute

*i play short track and skip intro's sometimes so usualy not have too much time to smile and dance , but doing my best
