heh i think more and more artists are jumping on the "hit a drum pad to be live" bandwagon. a few weeks ago i went and saw a certain artist play live, and they had a whole a whole electronic drum kit set up on stage, they only used it for a short time during one track, and only used the snare (2 and 4) and the tom ( a few fills. and i have to say, the person playing it had to be one of the worst drummers i've ever heard, he strggled to even time the 2 and 4 properly and the fills hardly ever landed on one (no this wasn't psysex because their drummer guy is really good). my point(s) are:

1. you can't expect to go and buy a drum pad and a pair of sticks with no prior experience and expect to be able to drum well.

2. don't add "live" elements to your act that are so bad they actually distract/detract from the overall show.

Playing melodies and tweaking filters simultaneously is perfectly possible - we all have two hands, after all, and I do this all the time. It's even possible to play melodies, tweak the filter, change feedback on a delay AND control the level of the sound, all at the same time, but you need a foot-pedal and breath controller. And before you say "that's impossible, no-one can do that" - this is why people practise playing musical instruments for hours a day.

again colin thats just what i´ve said in the beginning. if its a simple melodies sure one can do that, but what about other kind of melodies, what about if you need to tweak 2 knobs at the same time, what about if that single melodie requires two hands to play it?

i believe that playing live in what relates to trance music is and always have been very relative because, i wouln´t like to through a number but i would go for 80% of the whole track is not played live. this can depend on the number of artists one live has on stage.
and most of all assuming that most trance artists are not musicians, in my opinion the greatest goal is not actually the live performance but indeed the music itself.

this whole question of actually playing live or not makes me imagine in the future, big wide screens headed to the crowd filming the artist actual performance like it happens in big rock concerts, cause from what i see in parties it gets a bit dificult for most trancers to can actually see down there what is actually happening in the cabin 2 meters above!!

Yes, some promoters do put the stage in some silly places. In the end though, my own motivation for getting as much live stuff happening in the 'live' sets I play is so that I know that we've given the dancefloor value for money, and an experience they wouldn't otherwise have had - whether or not the audience actually knows they've had it! Otherwise I'd rather DJ the tracks.

As for the 'big screens' argument, anything that makes us raise our game and do better for the dancefloor is a good thing. Sure, the music is (or should be) about the trance experience but you won't get the whole dancefloor trancing out with their eyes closed the whole time, so for those who are just dancing and enjoying the music it helps to have something related to the music to look at.

And as for all the 'what ifs', Lithium, there are ways round all those problems, for example playing back controller information from the sequencer while using both hands to play the melody. All it takes is thought and preparation. And if it's still impossible - why, then I'd forget about the melody and pick up a drum instead.          Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Perhaps most Brazilians dont have the money to buy all that sweet hardware we all love. I know a DJ that is trying to get his live up and running for about a year, but no money to finish buying the stuff he needs. Besides, on my opinion the most important thing is to get the freaks dancing. It does not matter if you use a 386 laptop or the latest synth/sequencer. Although is is indeed much cooler the real stuff. By the way, this not only happens to Brazilians. I've seen a long time ago two big names on the trance scene (old stuff), Crystal Method and BT. Both were fake, but it was cool. I've seen them in Boston and NY (onthat order). i Could Actually seen the midi and power cords unpluged. So as you can see, its not only Brazlians who are faking.

The most important is the VIBE!!!!

most live acts resume to some tweaking in the filter frequency. it´s the way things work. noone plays melodies in live acts, it´s insane and almost impossible, only if the melody is really simple like 1 or 2 notes.

Speak for yourself mate!

Obviously, not everyone who writes trance can actually play a musical instrument - so are the people who demand musicianship in their live acts saying that artists without traditional music skills should forget about presenting their tracks in a live setting?

[forgive me if this has already been raised, but I haven't read the whole thread yet, I just needed to reply to this post ]

Oh, and by the way, this is OOOD live:
