looking at this page more and more cluttered with promotional posts of releases and myspaces I was wondering:

there is a promotional section on this forum ?

if so why like this ?

in my humble opinion this way the forum is dying, no more space for sharing. only place for selling.

i hear what your saying, but to be honest, this is the only place in the world where i actually WANT to be sold to; every day i check this forum compulsively hoping for any possible leads regarding new music. If labels and artists weren't constantly posting threads about their work, I'd be less inclined to check it regularly.

IMHO, I think that if promotions were separate and it was just us fans here talking about music, this forum would get really slow and dull (like the world music forum).

just my 2 cents

As a moderator, I consider the promotional bit of threads to be marked as informative, rather than trying to sell...           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Guilty as charged.

Maux, as I recall in some of your past posts, you're all about music being independent. Now you're whining because some of us are taking an independent approach to "sell" our music?? I guess since you have interchill releasing your new album, you don't need a grassroots approach to getting the word out anymore. You know, you could always "share" that new album coming out with all of us.

Sorry Phil, I guess I took it differently.
My apologies to Maux if his true intent was benign.

At any rate, I don't see this forum "dying" anytime soon. Having been here for years, I've only seen it grow with more members and activity. Maybe Maux is inferring that the philosophical or intellectual discussion side of the forum has tapered, or not enough posts that are on the verge of being offtopic, but that is ok, because this forum is about chill music, first and foremost, and there are plenty of other forums for "sharing" ideas. If people are not talking and posting information about "chill music" then what are we really doing here?

my question was more practical than philosophic really.

I monitor few forums every day....(and blogs and tons of other pages)
and all of them are huge but have many different sections...
so I just log to the section I am interested in and I find the information I am looking for FASTER, without loosing time browsing.

I also noticed that in many of them you can't post promotional stuff or even links before you did few "uninterested" humble posts,
and I think it is a great rule.

I take Lucid Picnic posts as a positive example...he is a really active member here...
he is doing his posts promoting his new music and as well promoting other ppl music (maybe his friends, maybe just music he likes)
and he is posting academic papers about electronic music and so on....I believe he has the right and lovely approach to it.
this is why I am always interested in reading what he has to say...even the self promotion.
and now that I see it...honestly Androcell I have nothing wrong with your self promotion either..
you are here from many years and you share your ideas and opinions about many issues...like this one.

at the same time instead I hate to see posts from ppl/labels who never partecipate to ANY uninterested debate and come here and just stick their release with even release CODE and press release...and I believe this is a sneaky attitude...expecially if you do it in a place that is crowded of ppl having a conversation.

at one point this page was very messy with podcasts and DJsets and the moderators wisely decided to make a sticky folder at the top where collect all of those
(eheheh...actually after that decision magically the number of podcast posts dropped)...
so if I am looking for some I go there.

I think the same should be for the honest promotion of new releases...at least for my browsing experience.
IMHO-IMHO-IMHO and IMHO again.

yes Phil/Trip...I was thinking about the forum benefits...tnx for the notice

and now let's talk a bit about philosophy

thanks Androcell for the promotion you doing in advance for my album
I am doing an album for Interchill not for Warner Brothers as you know...that is pretty indipendent to me..(don't be jelous pls).
and I believe that a grassroots promotion (as you name it) it will be always necessary....vital....and fun !
but I really hope that Interchill has some diverse marketing and promotional strategies than the promotion on this forum to sell it.
this is not the only place where I want to be sold Vector...and this is not the only place where I want to buy either...
I am off with this aquarium story....being stuck in a ghetto is a nice cliche for a while...but is a bit adolescential. IMHO again.

I am not whining....not at all...and I have FULL HUGE respect of ppl getting the word out indipendently in places like here
(tnx again ISRATRANCE to still exist)....I do it as well...and I will continue even now that I have an album deal with Interchill, don't worry.
and I actually love to log in on a forum page and see tons of indipendent "horizontal" stuff going on...
but since I am convinced that it will grow more and more I believe that it will need some kind of organization to avoid that the vitality of the forum dies (I am not talking about the number of posts or ppl loggin in).
and I think that also indipendent promotion has to be done with respect.
and with some simple rules it could be even more effective.

if I have been blatant and irritant again...just ignore me. ;-)

i agree with the idea of promoting music here, both artists and labels as well as e-zines etc. i also like that its not organized under promoting section. because isra has a promoting section, alright but for instance i dont check there often because many psytrance promotions there. you have to view all posts to understand if its ambient or chill or whatsoever.
so its more easy to follow whats going on around here. well under ambient section another promo section?
i dont know..i think its not that necessary.
---
about being active then promoting.well i also dont like seeing a post by someone which is his or her first post and its about a new release.i skip those.it just feels cold.i dont think a rule is a necessary to avoid those posts.some would ve interested and some not.
i have to say i agree with maux about forum looking a bit un organized sometimes. hard to put into words but it feels unorganized or thrashy or whatever.
i even think subject parts of the posts causes that.personally i am trying to be minimal but informative and not to use capslock at my posts.
---
androcell news, ott news , this news that news posts could be used as promotional posts but i dont trust users always check those news so i make new posts about every news by lucid picnic
but honestly giving information is always first intention on my side.
i also love make people have a listen to my music.i am trying to hook people up to free music of mine. but i would hook people up to released material also. i dont see smthing wrong there
--
its always nice to follow whats going on around here.
thumbs up for ethical promotional posts

Far from jealous, dood. I have my own debut Distant System project album coming out soon on Celestial Dragon. Too busy with many things to be jealous of anyone.

And yes, big respect to istratrance for the ability for artists to self-promote and share music information here.

Good points all around, everyone...
keep it lax.

lol...you just don't get my irony...
explanation:
infact there is nothing to be jelous about it.
there would be some reason if it was Warner Brothers instead ! (that was the joke).

I hope to make you laugh this time.

I think a separate new releases and promotional section for the chillers would be great.

EDIT:
suddenly I got a satori:
or actually this is the promotional section for the chillers and I am totally wrong ?
so maybe we need a philosophic ranting section where me and Androcell can have our duels ?

EDIT 2:
I laik drookiedoookie macaroni sushi inglish..tnx for sharing Lucid Picnic          "There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain will never improve, and that's here." Aldus

I personally like all those "commercial announcements" - this forum has imho the most completed list of new releases/old recommendations etc.

It's much faster for me to log in and check this section than to check websites of all labels and artists I'm interested in. Not to mention all that stuff I would never be able to discover by myself.           http://www.chillumafia.com

And after all this do we all get to a collective conclusion: We love this place best!

i kind of thought it was in bad taste to shamelessly self promote to you lot...

when i see it from others it strikes me kind of like preaching to the converted... and it is not that interesting either...

i much prefer to read the philosophical duels and dialogical exchanges that pop up from time to time - especially those that don't sink into defensive dead ends

mods - please try to keep promo spam in the promo section and leave this one for actual non sales related info and ideas

when it comes to promotion it is way more convincing when the subject is not also the speaker/writer/poster
