I still dont understand.

Why cant a DJ set which is 1½ - 3 hours be a story, when an artist album which is 74 minuttes can ?

I think there is a lot more to story telling than just for how many hours you go at it.

Also, DJs can work together on a lineup - Every DJ having responsibility for writing his chapter in the story.

If a DJ set is supposed to be a story, then the party will be perhaps 2-3 stories after each other... Why not let the whole party be the story, and the DJ set the chapter huh ?

There should be room in the scene both for short, medium and long DJ sets. I think, thats the core of this discussion here - and not setting standards for what a DJ set is and is not.

Also, I do agree, its sad that DJ sets get shorter and shorter - like I wrote in the beginning, sets here in Denmark can be as short as 30 - 60 minuttes now !

A story is a fictional narrative. When I say that music tells me a story, I mean that it enables my mind to build a fictional narrative- fictional reality, events, visual world, etc. That story can of course be a very abstract one, meaning not necessarily: john went down the road today and saw a little dog.

I think good music usually tells a story, together with the listener's mind, that is.

Why is it annoying, btw?

I think longer sets do not condition you to play one style of music. If I play for 2 hours you have an hour to accelerate the set 45 minutes of peak dance and 15 as a farewell. Usually 120 minutes is about 24 to 30 tracks, 12 to 15 to build 10 to 12 for peak and 2 to 3 for a farewell. This has been the average length of a mix I have always played and it worked.

Now I had chances also to play longer sets. I like 3 to 4 hours because I can play different styles and I can start a set from the very beginning and conclude in the same place... somewhat like comng full circle. It is like a story, you present the music, with a clear and defined beginning reflecting the moment. You can take different paths, funky, dark, humoristic... the set becomes very dynamic because you smoothly change through these moods and you have time to insert three, four or five tracks to create this change. Then towards the end you can conclude the whole mix, either @ full throtle or slowly painting an end as the music keep the audience engaged but slowly lands them on Earth. That is what is call to tell a story I guess. 2 hours you can do it, but there will be a limited number of mood changes and can feel sometimes like a short film

Weeee, finally someone I can agree with

I have a side note though, about the structure you outline in your set.

It is also worth considering that in a lineup you work with and build on the set being played before yours. So, sometimes its not always the smartest thing to "come full circle" - If you want a complete/intact journey thruout a party (and not just a DJ set), it can become frustrating to go around in circles musicly.

Therefore, when Im in a lineup, I will try to create a set that picks up where the last DJ left the vibe, and then carry it to a completely new place - Therefore, I might not need so much time to build up energy since I will tab into whats already there.

For instance, I planned a set which went after a 3d Vision DJ (raider) who would for sure end his set with a very high energy level - Knowing that, I planned to start out there and take it slowly into a groovier and funkyer sound, slowly progressing into softer and more progressive tracks - lining up an easy path to pick up on for the next set (moving even more into more progressive sounds).

If theres only 1 DJ at a party, he will have to spin 8 hours or more - but if there is more than one DJ, he will have to work together with others - Keep an open beginning and end - So its not like 1 story sandwiched into 2 others. (unless the 2 others are chilled out intro and outro sets, which could be a nice idea - which I used myself for a series of prerecorded sets for a private party 10 hours of trance, 4 hours of chillout).

Whatever 1 DJ can do in 4 hours, 2 Djs can do in 2*2 hours - especially if they work together.

Its not about the DJ, its about the music. I think, that organizers should ask the DJs they book for how long they prefer to spin and so forth - This way, its up to the DJ. This is what we need, and not some general consensus about short dj sets being bad, or long dj sets being good.

It all depends on the dj & personal preference. I prefer 1½-3 hours when DJing, I can go for 4 hours - but I really get tired around 3 (both my ears, feet, back start to hurt - this pain which will disconnect me from the music and distract me).

For me, DJing is not about endurance... and I dont consider myself a lesser DJ for preffering sets in the 1½-3hour class. (I dont consider Goa Gil a kick ass DJ because he spins for 18 hours straight either).

At a party, different artists will have to work together to create meaning within the music. Give them the artistical freedom they need. Thats all I think we should encourage.

Best Wishes

I agree with you Krell. When I made lineups for parties i always had in mind the DJs' styles and build the big picture through that mindset.

About length. I think 3 hours is great, it gives to enough time to take up and down, left and right And you can be full force through the set.

Sometimes when I mixed, three hours just flew by and sometimes it was a long journey. As always it all depends in the moment.

Two hours for me is a one directional set. I mean I will build it higher and higher and then transform the music but maintain the energy level.

Beyond three, like you say you do the job of two DJs, with the difference that it is one vision. It all depends on our state of mind and stamina in the moment itself.

For me less than 2 hours I will just bang it from a top 20 and I think that was the complain of the first post... but i think if you play for 1hour and you have seven DJs, it is a matter of lineup. Now if everyone plays the same music you are bound to a boring night without dynamics.
