no, what kind of story do you mean?

fairy story or what? where is the problem?
I will take my case
put it full of fresh downloaded releases ( i got the best ones!!!

go to the party, put on the headphones and BOOOM

yeah booom, what kind of story??? its all about Boom man, every track must kill the other, and if only 2 minutes are left i put in the next fullonkillertune and BAAAAM, and the next BAAAAAM , and the next BAAAAAM!!!

the LEDs of the mixer must be RED man, RED!!!! everywhere on every track and the masterout must have the highest RED!!
fullon into the face BOOOM!
everything else is for lamers and is boring...

so what kind of story you are talking about? every track must be 100% killer man! no up and down, up and down: is shit. dynamic is crap man, come on what are you talking about?
1/16 bassline everywhere. and if it would exist, i would play 1/32 basslines, all the time !!! BOOOOOM!!!

I guess the reason why there's no DJ's playing long sets today (4+ hours) is because people today got no freanking clue about what a party is all about.

Just take a look at this thread. I dont know if I should laugh or cry.

Yes lets put on 8 DJ's and 5 liveacts in one party.... Thats sure going to be amazing (NOT!!!).

I wish some of you some day will experience what it will say to have a DJ take you on a journey for more than the obligatory 2 hours kilarghhhhhhh "see I am a star" sets.

I have noticed these days lotsa artists who have come down and played india dont get the time they deserve to complete a entire 'set'. Incase of indoor gigs i think they are instructed by the club owners to keep it short , sweet , clubby and commercial for more reasons than one

As far as nature parties are concerned i think a dj should play for minimum four hours in order to play a complete set .

i dont like sets with just wham bam in your face boom ... it should be a gradual progression and thats the way i like it           missing plug-in

@HandA

Let me turn the tables on you Are you saying a DJ cannot create a decent set between 1½ and 3 hours ?

Mind you Goa Gil does 18 hour sets and demands to be the only person on the lineup for that day in the event (so Im told)... but, he plays the same dark psy all thru his set (or at least, in my ears he did at last years Emma here in Aarhus).
I fellt no progression thruout his set - No journey, voyage or feeling of getting anywhere.

I think - We must also divide what we are talking about here into 2 aspects of creating flow & meaning in a set.

#1.: Journey, Story, Voyage.
This is about progression thru sound, going from one style to another - Giving the listener a "trip thru sound" and directing the energy levels thruout the set just right for it to be tasty.

#2.: Creating Meaning, Background & Themes .
Letting voice/other samples work together with each other, or together with other elements in the music. Choosing tracks to put emphasis on for instance philosophy regarding expansion of consciousness or science perhaps.

So, with No 1 its about music, style and progression. This create a journey - and - with No 2 its about giving that journey colours and understandable meaning... Connecting the themes in the tracks and not just the sounds.

I dont think you have to spin 4+ hours sets in order to do this at all - I can, at least for myself, achieve it in 1½ hour - But I prefer 2-3 hours. I think its a matter of DJing skill more than anything else...
You can give a shitty DJ 4+ hours and he will just have selected or be selecting tracks who will neither accomplish method No 1 or 2. That is, a boring & uninspired set.

Best Wishes

you allready recognized the situation?

now seriously...

the question is: what comes after the 'cry' for you..?

people think they could 'consume' trance, like you can consume charaz or whatever, coca-cola whatever.
they think as more killer-liveacts as more they have fun.
the organizers think they can catch more people putting a style-spread on the lineup to satisfy a big spectrum = getting more people, getting more money. its all about consuming.

its has the effect that also the djs are not trained to play new sets anymore, because the bookings are just for 1-2 hour. the have no experience what they can do, what advantages a long set has and what trance is about. as you once said perfectly, its all about "hit and run". the people run, the organizers is counting the cash, the dj is counting the cash, the people are happy.
and a few ones sit there, and think: where have all the flowers gone?

thats the circle of art, when art is mixed with too many other things like - i dont want to say money, but... - things like unsensibility.

@ HANDA u r right .

people today got no freaking clue about what a party is all about.

i for myself was attracted to the scene only coz of what i heard and how i heard it after my dose .

and let me tell u i m SERIOUS .

STORY was in ONE OF THE BEST PARTIES i think i hav ever been to ,WHERE I KNEW THAT M ADDICTED TO THIS FEELING OF FEELING THINGS DIFFERENTLY TOOK PLACE IN THE JOURNEY A GREAT MAN TOOK ME TO .

let me be more clear on this there was this party i guess in 1999-2000 in india where JORG KESSLER (SHIVA SPACE) had taken abt 1000 crazy psy-headz into 1 hell or (heaven) of a journey which ever suits u all better..

a 12 hour journey into the world of everything.
JORG KESSLER the greatest of story tellers .

p.s i would really like to add JORG KESSLER to the list of great story tellers ...he's done his masters in it

If there is such a list i must add GoaGill for his great journeys through space.
Unfortunatly i had just once the chance to enjoy one of his countless hours sets, and i must say that since this party he is the master of djs for me. Maybe not his mixing skills but his telling is the reason for this.

i would love 4-hr sets, but it is not easy to play for 4 hours straight, some ppl can do it, others cannot           Load Universe into Cannon. Aim at Brain. Fire.

HEhe, perhaps we will end up with a setup where every DJ gets to play 1 track ;-) Then the audience can vote for him to stay or kick him from the lineup.

Well, thats an extreme thought from you. I guess u'd rather just see people sitting and staring at a DJ who's playing some rather distasteful music then or wouldn't you just prefer him out of the console all together?

ever try standing up for many hours and mixing tracks while at it? it's not that easy. i think the longest i ever played was for 5 hours straight, and my back was pretty sore the next day. and yeah, you can tell a story in 3 hours - it's not the length, it's the quality that counts.

though in order to tell a story, the DJ has to have something to say first. I think experience and wisdom of the person has a lot to do with the stories they can tell and knowledge they can teach.

hope this is the right section to ask...but nowadays many parties have 3-4 djs, each playing a 2 hr set, which some complain doesnt let anyone make a story....what is the minimum time required?

2nd: is it even important to make one or is storytelling an outdated concept? and if bychance its traditional meaning has changed, then how?

As you can read in this thread it's pretty much outdated, I guess. Which is sad for me. But seems trance became fastfood as some indicated here.

For me the music in a party must tell a story. Trance was always for me music that challenges the mind, that takes it places, new places, interesting places, funny places, scary places, difficult places, beautiful places. The DJs should be the tour guides to all those new places- they construct the journey, build the story, screen the movie- and yes it might have fairies in it, or monsters, or just weird obscurities, or whatever your mind and the music can create together. A good trance party when I dance from start to end is a journey my body and mind go through with a lot of other people in a certain evironment.

That's why I rather have a few good DJs with long sets over 10 famous live acts anytime, that's why I think that arranging the line up is so important.

I never DJed less than 3 hours when I was DJing trance, and now as a chill DJ I try to DJ the longest possible, 8 hours is the longest I've played- and I was standing the whole time, and yes I was knocked and tired in the end, but I was riding through it all the way and having the time of my life, telling my story with the music.

This story for me as a DJ, btw, is not like a planned thing, it's the way the music weaves itself, the way the tracks line up, because they feel like it, the way you feel like taking it down, or up, or break it altogether, or change the mood slowly slowly, or challenge, or sooth. The way you interact with the crowd passing the energies around. And when the story is good, when it's flowing- you just know- as a DJ and as a dancer/listener.

Try it
