the best way to learn psytrance is :

born again, reach the 10 years old and start with piano and guitar lessons.
find somebody to play with you.
start a band, play rock, jazz, blues, folk and classic.
be the best and the first in everything of your generation .
when you reach 18 years old get a gig in some bar.
when you reach 20 get a gig with a professional band maybe with an artist or something.
be the best of all the musicians in the gig you are playing with, (now you are 23).

when you feel that you know music in all its glory now is time to do the last step to learn psy trance:

take an acid.

are you high allready ??? good.

now put "The Nommos - Primal Meltdown"

now, listen carefully...,

next step is:

FORGET.

forget everything you think you know.
forget who you are and what you like .
forget the ego .
forget the chicks claiming for you while u play.
forget the music!.

Now you can do psy.

Buy an authorative book on music theory and composition and work through it with a musical instrument in your hands to try out how the theory sounds. The last step is the most important one: you must be able to hear the theory in your head if you want to do anything with it

Along this journey of making psytrance i think most of us star making rules. We can do this, we cant do that, and definitly never do "something else"..

But then after a while, you think about the rule you created never to do something, then you go on and try to do it. It doesnt fit. But after a while you MAKE IT HAPPEN.

What im trying to say is, the only rule on making trance is to break all the rules anybody created. Therefor there are no rules.. Thats the hole magic of trance and producing trance.. Be yourself, create your own style and play what you like to hear, and NOT what the public likes to hear.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Although this "there are no rules" approach may have certain benefits it also has its limitations. People like music to have certain characteristics (rhythm, melody, harmony, suspense). Some people have begun to map out what these characteristics are and call their findings music theory. If you let lots of people find out for themselves, they will probably end up with approximately the same sound. Knowing a bit about music theory will in most cases help you, and you can always choose not to use it(not sure about that last one).

Just think about the time signature and the key you write your tracks in. How free style is that, really, compared to the other tracks around ?

When it comes to rules for music, its much more important to understand the rules rather than to follow them.

Once you have a deep level understanding of what the rules are and why they work you can break any single one of them.

However the only way to get that level of understanding is to use them again and again until you get it.
