i use the old passive tannoy reveals. you can get them real cheap second hand these days (i dont think you can get them new anymore). only problem is they dont have good enough bass response. but im happy using them cos ive got so used to the sound.

thing is, i recently aquired a hi-fi sub that i know nothing about (for free ) and since the tannoy bass response is lacking i find it hard not to use it, which is probably not good. i reckon id be better of not using it but its just too tempting!

i got the ROLAND DM2100(2.1)just to start, and his subwoofer bring a new dimension in my productions, because you can make adjustmens in the bass level, to hearing the mix and to hearing the master, but i know MSP5´s sound, its very very good, they don´t have the punchy but the sounds are cristal, and if u work in a smaal room... but i know, these toy are not producing more, YAMAHA launch another model with the white woofer, (" MSP8 " ?) i dont remember but the relation sound-price its not so good comparing with MSP5. I know also the Alesis sound...., wow! the bass are over the top of bottle, they have volume!!! But it isn´t not for me!!
The yamaha´s are always a good buy.
My next buy? One of this small Genelecs are the target.

i bought Alesis M1 Active MK2 2 months back and i am just loving them infact i don love anything else except them

http://www.alesis.com/product.php?id=27

i found the sound quality much better than many other monitors which i referred to before buying thse ones....
so i'll suggest these monitors for electronic music. and they are not that expensive also.
trust me i'm more than happy with them

i just listened to the genelec 8040a,bm6a, adam p22 and mackie hr824 ,the 8040a "too nice" for my taste ,the bm6a i mix sometimes on them and they are great but you hear too much reverb and there are a bit flattering too ,the p 22 were the best for me and my friend, only great mix sounded good on them, switching to the genelec they were sounding like a hifi system...the mackie were not as bad as i thought, i think you can do great mix with all, after it s a matter of taste, but for us the p 22 were the best just a bit better than the bm6a.

well i have been using the dynaudio bm5a for about 3 weeks now, and i must say that they are far superior to my old home theatre speakers i was using before

the key to remember is that monitors are only one among many tools available to the producer. i used crappy speakers for two years and my production steadily went up the longer i worked at it. only once i really knew a thing or two about production was it time to make the moniotor purchase. i mean, what good is great monitoring when you don't even know what you're monitoring. knowing your way around the studio will give you the best bang for your buck in terms of production, but eventually a good set of speakers is neccessary to bring the production "out of the basement."

now on to my "review." in particular i can make these comments about the bm5a:

they look beautiful-- classy and well designed, hand made in denmark (not in china, unlike many other monitors)

the sound is delivered in three ways--a tweeter (guarded by a metal triangle, looks very cool), a five inch woofer (unique dynaudio shape), and a rear port for the sub bass frequencies.

they are 50W--how loud does one really need to monitor? i have a presonus firebox as my audio interface and leave the internal mixer at -12 db so that i have more control over my volume (ie it is less sensitive, so that one step up in volume isn't so drastic). i also utilise the volume input level switch on the speakers (i set it to -10 db). once i have both of these enabled (-22 db cut total), i have lots of control over the volume with my main volume knob on my firebox. these are near field monitors, so i find 50w to be plenty powerful for the task.

a few days ago, however, i did want to push them to their limits so i set them up for a private "rave." this basically meant listening to them with friends all night really loud while we danced around
the range was now a bit further (ie using them as mid-field monitors rather than near-fields). my observations upon listening to some great music produced on dynaudio monitors (1200 mics - the time machine, sub6 - who needs love songs, astrix - artcore) was that these speakers can get very loud without starting to sound forced. I disabled my firebox mixer so that the only volume cut was the -10db switch on the speakers. by the end of the night i was shocked to see that i had cranked the volume knob on the firebox to the max! this means that they were running at full blast minus 10 db for several hours and they sounded great--the stereo imaging and frequency response was the most amazing thing i ever experienced. i had never appreciated these albums this much before! obviously, it helps that the test albums are extremely well produced:P every element was clearly reproduced. the sound just seemed to shimmer, it was a joy to listen to. i was easily able to carry conversations with friends despite the loud volume, and after many hours of trance being blasted through these speakers at mid-range, i had no listening fatigue. i felt as though my ears should be ringing, or at least be tired, but no! later in the night we listened to shpongle - nothing lasts and it really sealed the deal! i am extremely impressed with these speakers.

they cost me 1150 canadian plus tax (bm6a cost nearly twice that) seems to me that the design is basically the same on the two models (bm6a has no rear port, but rather a larger 6 inch woofer, plus it is 100w). these are price point speakers--mackie hr824 are about 30% more expensive.

the main difference i can see between the two pairs of dynaudios(in addition to the bm6a being more powerful) is that the bm6a goes down to 41 Hz, whereas the bm5a only goes down to 50 Hz. now is the extra 9 Hz of lowend worth doubling the price? that's for you to decide. personally, i find the bm5a to be very capable of bass reproduction. i do tend to not like my music as bassy though, so bear this in mind. for bass management there is a 2 db cut for eqing the lowend and also a high pass which is selectable between 60 Hz and 80 Hz. I tried these settings in a large room with loud volume and found it to be very useful in cutting out the booming bass (caused by reflections in the strangely shaped room).

so what do the speakers reveal when i am producing or when listening to professional music? it is the clarity in every detail. even if two sounds sort of occupy the same frequency range, they are both clearly discernable as being seperate. the envelopes on bass notes and the non zero-crossing pops are two examples of this detail. i can actually hear the difference that a small dip in an eq setting makes. they enable me to have a greater amount of control over the sounds. it is analogous to a coarse adjustment versus a fine adjustment. since i can better hear the small changes, it means i have much more options than if i could only really hear a difference in more exaggerated settings. with these speakers, you are no longer listening to music, you are listening to an intricate arrangement of sounds that form music. obviously, this skilled level of being able to differentiate sounds and hear fine detail is only possible with much practice--the speakers will not enable the average joe to suddenly be a trance superstar, but they will enable someone with a rich background to really examine these fine details that other speakers simply struggle to recreate.

i hope that this post is helpful to anyone considering purchasing the bm5a. i did a lot of research in making this decision, and now i can give you my opinions on them. i highly recommend these monitors to anyone who isn't really bass-hungry or doesn't need extremely loud music. for my purposes (making trance and listening to trance) i could not ask for a better sound at this price! it makes it a pleasure to open up cubase and plug away!

here is a link to some great videos on the dynaudio site. i watched them all several times to get an idea of what goes into these speakers: http://www.dynaudioacoustics.com/Default.asp?Id=3070

some tracks are available on www.ragingshaman.com
any feedback would be great--keep in mind that these songs were done before i got the bm5a, though!           canadian psytrance?

i'm using the bm5a's since about 4 months.... and they're wonderfull!! the quality is very fine... very clear sounds. the bm6 have their bass resonance hole at the front and go down to 41Hz. But if you really want to spend money.. then better try the bm15a....they're absolutly great, but have also their price.

I can really recommend dynaudio's ... with them your always on the safe side
