The Tapco S-8's are a very reasonable monitor, as are the range of KRK's.

I dont think anyone has mentioned Tannoy yet! The Tannoy Reveal range is very good.
I have a pair of very rare, passive Tannoy System 60's that came from an ABC studio in the mid 1980's, and they are f**king astoundingly good monitors! Better than the big majority of modern nearfeilds to my ears (imo). They have an insane bass response, i dont even use a sub (altho im planning to).

And yes as a general rule, stay away from Behringer unless you are very poor, but you cannot deny that Behringer is pretty good value for money! And while M-Audio make some great soundcards, stay away from the BX8 monitors.

Genelec are great, but for some reason i find the Genelecs i've used have been a little unreliable for mixdown, sometimes, especially if you dont reference properly. They sound nice though!

Mackie HR-624's are nice too, i would probably prefer them to Genelecs (maybe), and they have huge bass response!

Also, if you can find a pair of Yamaha NS-10m's second hand, snap them up! Even though they sound like dog shit, they are still an industry standard reference. (!!)

I am shopping around at the moment for monitors as well. Here's my thoughts:

The BM6a's are used by Astrix, Infected, and GMS. SUB6 uses the BM15a (no longer nearfield--but still Dynaudios). I spoke to Golan from SUB6 this summer at Tshitraka and he said that Dynaudios are solid monitors! I believe that Talamasca uses BM6a as well (though his production wouldn't lead me to put any faith in whichever monitors he uses).

The dynaudio BM6a are 50 watt, and cost $1150 Canadian, BM6a are 100 watt and $2100 Canadian. I have heard the BM5a and was impressed. I was listening to "Around the World in a Tea Daze" by Shpongle. The sounds were really crisp and distinct. What really struck me was the positioning of the sounds. I felt like I could really clearly interpret where each sound was (both left/right stereo positioning and also the forground/background depth).

I wonder if it's really worth the extra cash to get the BM6a--the monitors that my favourite acts use? I would be more inclined to spend that money on extra computing power, personally. Or maybe some beers and nag champa to fuel some studio sessions

I listened to the Bx8 and thought they were really bassy, for what that's worth. Personally, I like to have a reasonable handle on the bass. I doubt that using a sub or even a set of monitors with really big woofers would be very helpful to me, but maybe I am just sensitive to bass! I like to hear the mids in the bass rather than the low low end of it anyways. Maybe hearing many good songs butchered at parties has jaded me (too much low end). I think that it will end up being the BM5a for me! My buddy has the Mackie HR824 and I wouldn't want to bite his style, afterall.

Here are some links for IM's and Astrix's gear lists:

Now you mention you want the BM6a but at that price point wouldn't the Adam's offer some competition? I realize that different styles require different needs... but is Dynaudio really superior to Adam as well? If so, the Dynaudio must make the lower end KRK, Mackie, Event and so on sound like crap...
I am very interested in the Adam A7's myself as the BM6a's cost twice as much. Would those be good for our beloved style?

My friend also has the Mackie HR824, they are good but I've heard so little about them, and they are just as costly as the Adam's...           Peace Love Unity:

Lol yeh man I totally agree. Respect to the guy and all, i really love some of his tunes (especially Take Off!) but his kicks are always too weak in the mix and there seems to be bit of uncomfortableness in the 625Hz to 2.5Khz range on some of his tracks....imo.

Still, if its not a mixing/monitoring deficiancy and he just likes that sound, i cant complain cause he still writes some good tracks. lol

Yes it is worth it to spend the extra money on getting the BM6A..I use them now & previously used the BM5A..I think the BM6A are much more revealing and translate better than their smaller version..The low end is also much more solid, the BM5A seem almost a little 'hi-fi' in comparison..

The ADAM A7's are supposed to be really excellent monitors..The only disadvantage to them is that they don't go as low as the BM6A's..However ADAM is renowned for their crystal clear high end and flat response..I think at the $1000 mark you couldn't go wrong with ADAM A7 or Dynaudio BM5A..           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

In short: for the same price, I find Adam products better than Dynaudio and Genelec systems - while Dynaudio would probably be a better choice for full-on (lower reaching bass), for anything else I don't think there's much room to compare. Adam's high end makes Dynaudio speakers sound like a boombox, seriously, there's THAT much of a difference. But seriously - don't go cheap on your monitors, they're the second most important tool in your studio (after your brain, hopefully. Otherwise, they're #1 and you better have a lot of money). If you think your PC is more important, I'll make it simple for you. IT IS NOT. A 2000-core CPU with 2TB of RAM won't help your music sound better on PA. Monitors will. End of story.

Of course, this is a matter of taste. I compared Dynaudio, Genelec and Adam speakers time and time again and found Adam to offer better sound. This is of course, subjective (well, IMO it isn't ), so I'd recommend you'd go check for yourself. Most Adam importers will have Dynaudio BM6As there as well, just so they can show off how slick their stuff really is compared to the competition. Very convincing.
