I just bought a terratec phase 28 for 160€. It arrived about an hour ago (woehoe) and i'm very satisfied with it! I had a buggy m-audio fw ap. The phase 28 is cheap, has 8 outs (jack) 2 ins, asio (works smooth!). No more firewire for me...pci all the way! Orange troopa: why avoid sp2? I have sp2 and it doesn't conflict. |

Just for the record i had m-audio audiphile in my pc and had no problems (not the usb one) in fact its a great card.
however I have had a few driver issues with my new m- audio firewire 410 and ,scarily, if you plug it in when its on with the large 6 pin firewire cable you can permanently blow your firewire ports !!!!
however soundwise its fine and once its up and going seems to be fine. havent tried for latecy yet.
a couple of mates have an emu and had driver and noise problems and it took them a long time to get it all installed properly and running smoothly.
Another friend has m-audio 10/10 with no problems. |

Recently we have been using the Echo LAyla 3G. It is a great soundcard. We haven´t had any problems since we have it.
The only problem is that it demands a lot from our pc. Now we must get a new Pci-X motherboard and i think we won´t have anymore problems.
We also want to get a more or less cheap usb sound card. Which one do you think is the best choice for about 200-250 dollars? |

That's what I've done. Takes quite a bit of space though.

In the studio I use 2* M-Audio 1010LT. Runs on a Intel-based machine with XP sp1. Works wonderful. Had big problems with AMD so I switched. High quality, very reliable soundcards for little money.
Only downsides that ppl might dislike is that it's unbalanced(RCA-connections).
Live I use Edirol PCR-1. Works great, very reliable.
I run my sets with that and a laptop with softsynths.
If you are looking for soundcards or a slim midi/audiocard-keyboard. Be sure to consider these.

i use emu 1820m, runs smooth, clean, transparent, very nice choice in its price range, i also have M-audio FW 410, don`t like it as much as emu, even with the newest drivers dropouts, i played a live gig with this and i was praying to finish it without a crash. also headphones outs are very weak as stated before

yeah, but maybe you got a little more freedom this way? Being able to choose high quality components for the setup, like very good mic preamps and so on.
anyway im still thinking, and maybe i will decide when next paycheck comes... i dont know.
the thing that its unbalanced makes me hesitate a little cause i will probably use long cabels and i really want everything that can give me high quality recordings... though its not all up to the components, to know how to do it is a art it self..
i have droped the thoughts right now and we will see what happens.. still i have had no problems with m-audio so far... so its still a possible option... |
