Hi, I've been looking for a good quality soundcard for under 350 € with multi outs, to upgrade my audiophile 2496. It will be used as my main soundcard on both a desktop PC with Powercore cards and a Asus laptop.
I've been lurking on the focusrite saffire le which has 4 analog inputs, 6 analog ouputs for 325 €.
There is a great review about it on sound on sound :

Anybody who owns one could give some feedback ? Thanks a lot. |

I have it
Basically a high quality soundcard. Ive had some problems with it, but I think that is due to the firewire controller on my Dell Inspiron rather than the card itself.
It works very well. But I do have some regrets; this card is mainly for recording audio in my experience. It has many channels, and the DSP-effect only works in recording session, if you use it directly in the suquencer it will drain normal cpu power.
And I think the design of the saffire software-controlpanel is awful.

Just click safely remove hardware from windows & then flip the switch from the back from bus powered to dc or vice versa.

If you're in pc then stick to RME, if you're on MAC then the Duet definitely. http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic |

do the apogee cards even work with pcs?!
I'm on mac, and got an ultralite right now...what I'm thinking about is using both at once, the duet and my ultralite...the ultralite for processing power, and the duet for its convertors and as masterclock for the ultralite
if this is even possible what I'm thinking about...but I think I remember that you can use several soundcards together on mac if I'm right...
any opinions on that or someone who can clear my doubts on this?

May I ask you why would you choose the Duet?
At the moment, I'm considering ultralite and the duet (as i have a mac)... Why Duet?
Much better sound?
I heard that with Duet you can't set headphone and line outputs to different levels, is this true? |

They're both good interfaces but Apogee converters are going to be better.
It depends on your needs as well, the Duet is very portable, easy to take to gigs & stuff but if you need more i/o's then go for the Ultralite.

exactly...the duet is mainly better because of the converters!
but the ultralite got lots more ins & outs...and with an external clock (like I want to get from the duet, if its possible as stated above) its also pretty powerful!
the only disadvantage of the ultralite is that its got NO internal clock, what causes that the samples are sometimes not set in exact intervals
PS: anyone got some thoughts about my post above?

Hello to all
I would like to connect my pc to an analogue mixing desk and record my final mixdown from the mixer back to my pc. I have been buying afew magazines from the UK "computer music" and "future music" they both come with dvd's with masterclasses from various artists each month. What I have noticed is that all of them do there final mix out of the box and send it back to the PC. Also I have seen alot of psy artists do live sets like this, with there laptops, and output around 8 to 16 channels to the mixing desk. I no Mr Postford does this with his Mackie 32.8 mixing desk and he has hardware effects setup to his send channels like an eventide eclipse so he can add them to his separate channels as he is mixing down, he uses 16 input channels from his pc and some from hardware. Now I no Simon Postford uses the apogee gear "DA-16 and the Rosetta 800".
So my question is does anybody no of a more cost effective sound card setup which would allow me to send 16 channels from my pc or laptop to a mixing desk ? I have been looking at the MOTU and RME hardware but it is still some expensive stuff. Any suggestions or comments would be good ?
Also does any body no much about out of the box summing. There seems to be alot of audio manufacturers creating summing boxes these days ? |

Well I no, Echo digital has two cards for laptop, one for DJ which is only for output and the other one for output and input ? And RME has the HDSPe ExpressCard which you can hook upto some of there external gear. But I would be interested to no also ? |

All of the firewire audio interfaces you have mentioned are really made for recording, but if I had to chose one I would go for the Alesis io26 24Bit/192kHz Recording, nice pre amps, 8 line level outputs etc looks cool to. On the other hand if your not recording I recommend this echo indego DJ basic but good you should check it out. |
