"Cannabis"

Thats very true but I love the sound that hardware produces.Give me a Neve Genesys mixing desk anyday. And some eventide and the list goes on etc.

Hey do you have any tracks posted I could listen to ? I would be interested to hear your production quality.

there are really some nice things to add to the sound by analog processing...I even know some guys that swear on hitting their tunes through an analog tape recorder to add some warmth and analog touch

For anyone who´s looking for a soundcard now...

A sound card needs:

1) The number of imputs and outputs (flexibility that you need)

2) Good drivers !

3) Good Converters

All this 3 are very important.

Look at spects as Dynamic Range.

Good soundcards have higher dynamic ranges.

A example of a nice soundcard is the E-Mu 1212M with costs less than 150 U$ and have good converters and even the ADAT in so you can expand it later to 10 Analog imputs with a 8 rack converter.
If you plan to use Windows and OSX, RME cards are good and they have very solid drivers (but they cost more).
There are better soundcards ofcourse but they cost a lot more and you won´t perceive so much difference if you don´t have a 3000 U$ set of monitors.

For the last post, analog processing is good, i have a tape head here, and lot´s of compressors, pres, and other anlog gear, but most important is good soundcard and good monitors, theses days you can achieve very good sound without all this gear.
Today your mind is your limit, not your equipment.

Guys, help....I'm gonna spend some money on new equipment, and this time i want something I'll be happy with and keep it !!! I left out all the "plastic" interfaces this time, and i'm between :
1)Presonus Firebox
2)MOTU Ultralite

Which is better ? (Forget the ins-outs, i can bear with both, though the extra ones in MOTU might come in handy with live bands) When I say better, i mean in terms of drivers/compatibility/stability/performance/audio quality ?

P.S I'm mainly working with Mackie Traction/Reason,on laptop, if this helps some to give me better guidance !!! Also I heard some bad news some time ago for MOTU drivers. Is this true?

between those 2 the motu is by far superior... but the motu is weird in pc environments and fire wire controllers.
is a better option for mac.

now between the firebox and another fw audio interface i would also add to the list he terratec phase x24 it has super stable drivers (i work a project in 4ms buffer without any glitches whatsoever and in high cpus)
has spl preamps and converters.
its full aluminum box (no plastic) and its great in the studio and on stage (not even 1 crash in two years and i use it every day)

there is also the yamaha go 46 that is identical to the terratec phase x24.

and ofcourse ur best choice for pc is RME.

I've had an ESI juli card in my desktop PC for a few years now. Ultra reliable card and I would imagine the quaterfire to be just as good.

I recently bought myself a MOTU Traveller for my laptop set-up and have been extremely happy. Fair amount of cash to outlay, but you can't put a price on high quality.

Thanks for your answer. Although I'll most probably go for MOTU. Terratec and Yamaha isn't an option for me, compared to the Ultralite ofcourse. I've been told that their probs with Pc's have been sorted out with their latest software. It's MOTU, so, it had to be fixed sometime !

hint: stay away from presonus' fire**** series (especially for professional use)

we've purchased 1x Presonus Firestudio + 1x DigimaxFS in our studio and... pfff

1st. to clear out myself.. Firestudio (in particular) has maybe the best preamps i've worked with (class A) and in general we're very pleased with the results u can have with this card.

that is IF u can make it work !@!!!

firestudio (+other fire-sth) has syncing problems with most of the firewire cards around.

it DOESN'T work with onboard firewire
it DOESN'T work with firewire cards with VIA chipsets

it ONLY works with SOME fw cards with Texas Instruments chipset.
again most of the times even seems NOT CONNECTED.

plus: u have to install several patches and/or hotfixes
(i even had to regedit to make it work properly and that's after i've tried FOUR diffirent fw cards)

have a taste:

http://forums.presonus.com/showthread.php?t=2853

again.. even i have reached this point (after many weeks struggling), i'm having really awkward problems from times to times.

the real appeal is dealing with all these problems with costumers present. :|

Just wanted to have the opinion of you guys working with a USB laptop, a PCI-express firewire 3,4 cm laptop card, and a firewire interface.

The card that O have , a Belkin, is kinda not stable enough in the slot, so if I would hit it by accident, the audio would cut off(would be very embaressing at a gig). It has some leeway, even if it clicks in the slot.
My laptop doesn't have a firewire port, like many others, and I would like to use my firewire interface,

Any suggestions?

basically i think that u can forgive any firewire with PC...or maybe through a PCMCIA or ExpressCard.
I do have Presonus Firebox with macbook and it works very fine since i plugged it for the first time. Now a friend of mine has one too but with a laptop PC : huge problems of sync, crashes, shit like that.
I think it is almost the same with all firewire-based interfaces

I am using it with this:
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=277548

it works perfectly fine with my Viao and Fireface 400.

The only problem is that the card doesn't sit firmly enough in the laptop's slot, and can be detachted mechanically by accident, i.e when you hit it slightly. Maybe other card are better, but haven't tested them yet.

It's time for me to buy a new laptop sound card, my last one just died on me (Edirol UA-25).

I honestly don't trust firewire, due to playing outdoors a lot and having lots of issues with the firewire series of M-Audio (I had the 18/14, the 410, and the audiofile) (I got the cardbus, but it still doesn't power the card) so I would prefer one that is usb or pci cardbus is cool too. However I'm on a limited budget for the time being, so it needs to be under $300 US.

Can anyone recommend a good card with multiple outs, and at least one set of record ins? I've read a lot of the pages here, and it still doesn't seem to provide enough info for my particular need.

Also, I'm on pc... trying to save for a macbook, but that takes a lot of time and I have shows to play.
