The Fireface definately has better A/D D/A converters than the Ultralite..I can't say about the preamps guess they're both the same..
It all depends on what exactly you're going to be using the card for, if you're not planning on buying any hardware synths in the near future or recording a live band then you don't really need to buy such an expensive interface..
These interfaces are good though if you plan on adding a high end preamp/converter somewhere down the line..
As for the Multiface vs the Fireface, if you don't need preamps then go for the multiface, though with a pcmcia card for the laptop it ends up costing as much as the fireface 400 so might as well get that..
I just ordered a RME Fireface 400, i'll write my review here once i've tested it..

Hmm its a tough choice since they're both pretty good but if i was in your place and had to choose between those two then i would get the ultralite..
The multiface you will probably have to buy second hand (unless you can find someone who still stocks it) while the Ultralite will be brand new..They both have the same number of i/o's except with the Ultralite you get 2 preamps, in case you want to record something in the future..
The only negative point i see about the Ultralite is that it doesn't have ADAT outputs, but i guess you won't be needing those anyway..
So to me it makes sense to go with the Ultralite, not only does it have a couple of years on the Multiface in terms of technology, it has more features as well..
If possible though, test both devices with your setup to see which is most stable..

Well 600 euros for the Ultralite is a little overpriced, maybe you can order it from an online store? Email these guys they usually have good prices: http://www.playback-europe.com
It's your choice i guess if you don't need preamps & want to save 100 euros then get the Multiface (as long as it includes the pcmcia card) You can spend the extra cash on a midi-controller or something..

General question about sound card ... If I listened to my favorite track with my PC and my soundcard and that it sounds good, does that mean that if I choose a good VST or whatever software to produce sound, that sound have the potential to be as good as my favorite track ?

For PC I believe the Emu 1820M is a great choice, i don't know about Macs though. But a lot of Firewire soundcards are taking the place, like the motu firewire. I recommend to do a research before deciding on one. |

Any opinions on the Edirol FA-66 firewire card? http://www.roland.com/products/en/FA-66/
My budget would be around €300 max so I figured this would be good? I'm a bit afraid of the firewire interface though... I had a m-audio firewire AP and it never worked (tested it on 4 different setups ranging from desktop to notebook and from sp1 to sp2). Now I've googled for reviews on this edirol card and seems like some (not much) people have the same firewire problems with this card...

Hey Bandarlog!
check the presonus firebox (277 euro I've paid for it)It works just fine on notebooks, it has external powersuply, you just need a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable.
Its a very stable card... (have it 2 months and realy amazed by the quality)
just wanted to let you know.. Grz!! |

Thanks Dark Eco, but I'm afraid my childish & dangerous "I want a toy and I want it NOW"-attitude stroke again. I already ordered the Edirol FA-66 for only €299,95! (which is very cheap).

Read the specs in motu's page and question yourself what do u need, how many inputs, outputs, digital inputs (adat)??? im pretty sure ultralite is more than what u need, buying traveler would be spending too much money unless u want to record several musicians then u need several inputs, so.....go for ultralite but never dont forget to "read" a lot of answers get revealed by reading.Good luck |

Alright, I have to say that PCI is still the fastest way to go for soundcards, I highly recommend the RME 9632.
Firewire is great when it comes to mobility, for live shows, etc.
But, for Studio work PCI is the real deal.
