Hello everybody...

I was just wondering if anyone thinks that the term "Progressive" is used nowadays in a complete wrong way. All the dj`s or producers that sound housey/electro are called progressive!!!! I always thought that progressive had something to do with the fact that someone is creating something unique, original, not related with anything else. For me progressive is for ex. Eat Static, or every artist who is doing a unique breakthrough sound but i hear so many of the new house/trance acts being called progressive!!!! IMHO its clearly a misuse of a term. I really would like to hear some opinions.

i know how people don't like to categorize music by specific genre's, but it is a way of communicating of how to describe a certain style of music.

Your definition of Progressive Ellon is probably not shared by many. Progressive for me, is exactly the way it sounds. It is a track, that progresses throught the song, filled with layers.

The track may start off with 1 or 2 elements, then another element will get layered on top of that, then another layer then another, and when you get to the climax of a good track, it is filled with different elements, hence the term progressive.

And then some DJ's (myself included) just like to play what they consider good music, regardless of style...

Even though minimal is the trend, good progressive is certainly still being made - why abandon what you like just because it isn't as hip as 1 year ago?

As I see it, there's a time and a place for everything, be it progressive, minimal, tech, electro and even full on.

A time for everything....i agree.
But please dont use the word trance when the music is minimal techno or electro. Unfortunetly this happens a lot.

Magox:
I really agree with your definition, the thing is you see a lot of dj or live act of pure house/techno/electro sound calling themselves "Progressive" Trance. You can have all sorts of trance music, ways of constructing/composing a song but tecnho is not trance music nor is electro. The term progressive for such concepts is totally misused....

Hey Profane! My point isn't that they are still djs that spinn progressive.Everyone is free to do what he likes and every music style is acceptable as you said! The point is that minimal techno is totally different music from progressive. As about the hip I don't listen minimal and abandon progressive because of it.It has nothing to do with the trends.Minimal tech is the most fresh dance music with so many new ideas, that's why I prefer it nowdays. To the other side, progressive is still good but not fresh,it's just repeating itself the last years.           www.myspace.com/tasos_notrea

Progressive in my humble opinion is Subtle Thrust by Purple And Lunar.

Something starts simple with just a kick and a bass and then slowly but steadly evolves to something massive and magical that turns the danceloor upside down with its rythm and melodies.

90% of the house, techno, minimal, trance and even psy trance music out there is labeled as progressive but its certainly not.

I guess people like the word since it sounds too english and trendy and thats why they use it,i mean it sounds better and its easier to say that you listen to progressive than tribal house or euphoric trance or whatever.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Musical characteristics for "proggressive music" (aply mostly in rock , but i think for this topic it fit as well)

*avoid common popular music song structures

*Progressive music is designed mainly for listening, rather than for dancing, which meant that prog artists are able to use unusual rythms changing time signatures

* less predictable chord progressions

now , can u say what defined as "proggressive trance" fit into this criteria ?
i dare say no , its aimed to be dance music , usualy very predictable , and more pop vibe then oldschool classic psytrance

but names of sub-sub-sub genres (electronic-trance-proggressive) change from day to day , so dont take it too cirious and just know the artist u like listen to
