yeah man. One week ago this stupid mistake happened to me in a club and a friend came quickly and put volume down when i was searching cue. I was really embaressed and i'm sure will never happened again.
I don't think it really matters if you put 2 tunes from same artist. What matters is your story, your continuity of set.
But i think there is one more rule:
If you are a party animal don't put your hands on mixer or players when someone is mixing.

So i think the 3 rules are
1. there should be no mistakes! (you have to know how to mix)
2. know your music very well
3. feel your audience
Playlist is good but also you have to be able to change it depending on public

I would love to feel some of the female members of the audience. |

Rule or no rule, this is all very personal. Perhaps it is better not to call it a rule... Anyway, I do disagree with "rule" 2 but am completely in unison with "rules" 4 and 5.
Personally I think that each DJ develops their own personal vibe and story with a beginning, middle and end, so if the next DJ is attempting with your settings, your tale will have a different ending... If it's hard to follow up to the previous sound, tough story, but then it's up to the DJ's skill and creativity to pass through that. Aloha!

I opened a party where a big name was headlining and played one of his older, more minimal prog tracks from his first release.
I didn't ask him, and most people probably didn't even get it (cos the artist now plays full on), but I thought it was a cool idea and the crowd was still in prog mode so it went perfectly well.
Rule? Good sets rule.

I agree with all rules except 2, although if done more than once in a set it is annoying.
The rule of playing the same song twice, I think only people with low knowledge of Djing would do that... it's horrible! And i saw some who sometimes uses as intro and outro mmm.. well if your crowd is happy thats kewl but I wouldn't think so. |

THERE IS ONLY ONE MAJOR RULE
if your friend is djing, it is your 100% duty to fuck him up completely, by whatever means necessary.

I have to disagree with rule 2 as well. There are some artists that actually make different sounding or styled tracks, and sometimes two tracks from the same artists played back to back can get you from one feel to another. I can understand that rule if you are basically mixing the same sounding track, but if the artist makes these two tracks that fit in a transition from one feel to another, then it's fine.
I also don't really agree with rule 5 so much, especially if you're planning on mixing out of the track, sometimes lineups aren't crafted with the flow of the music in mind and transitions between two djs with significantly different styles can be a little harsh without some sort of ease in period.
Also with rule 3, if the guy before me plays a track of mine I had no intention on playing in the set, then that's more than ok. However it kinda would suck for some acts that have a limited library of tunes to play or are playing a prearranged set.
