^^^ very informative/amusing thread... I enjoyed the bit where the poster made a funny faux "product sheet" and pictures of his new "line array" product consisting of 2-way loudspeaker cabinents turned on their sides and stacked in an "array."

whoops, looks like I'm about to eat my words....

http://srforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/mv/msg/17240/0/0/15803/

I see the PAS tops stacked in a traditional fashion, as opposed to the "faux line array" at gemini... bet symbiosis 06 sounded much better than I had thought.

however, my ears are still bleeding from gemini!
anyone know where to purchase some quality earplugs with a relatively even frequency response?

Hi bastardsamadhi! That's my sound system in question. Funny you should mention the lack of "line array" last year at Symbiosis. That was one of the compromises we made last year in order to save time and money on the main rig. There will be no compromise on the main system this year. This year the top cabinets will be set up as a vertical array as they were at Gemeni, but with more cabinets. Granted PAS RS 2.2's are not top-of-the-line $10,000 a box line array cabinets, but with the extensive custom modifications we've made, they sound pretty damn good. In that configuration they're not acting as a 'line array' but the configuration eliminates a lot of the lobing and phasing issues that are present when arraying those boxes as a normal trap cabinet array, like we did at Symbiosis 06.

Regarding the thread you posted, the issue was that a nontechnical sales guy went and posted on the LAB that the RS.LA IS a true line array, and he got taught a lesson. Plenty of other companies make speakers that array vertically but are not a 'line array'. For example, here's one from JBL: http://jblpro.com/products/portablesound/vrx/ Even the famed Nexo Geo T used at last years Soulclipse is not a true line array: http://www.nexo-sa.com/asp/catalogue/catalogue.asp?linkid=640

I do find it odd that you thought the sound at Gemeni was bad. Many, many dancers and musicians complimented us on the sound quality at that show. It was very loud, but that's what ear protection is for I hope you're not making the mistake of 'listening' with your eyes instead of your ears, just because our top cabinets look a little beat, and use an unconventional setup, or listening based on brand name.

If you have any specific questions about the system, how it's set up, and why we array it the way we do, I'd be happy to discuss them with you via PM. Or you could start a "Know Audio is bogus" thread and I'll respond over there But I'd like to get this thread back on topic if possible...

That makes sense, as I did feel that response of the full range component of the system (however loud..) was relatively consistant around the dancefloor and otherwise.

Based on remarks made by others on PSW, I did assume that the cabs would sound better in a traditional horizontal array.

I now notice that you remarked that the boxes' "60 x 40" dispersion sounds more like "60 x 20"...

While the thread on PSW is bad press for PAS (whether from a technical perspective or just a demonstration of poor public relations), I should have made it a little more clear that my criticism of sound at gemini was more of a quantitative rather than qualitative nature.

Your sound was great, without ear protection -- at distances beginning several hundred feet away from "center dancefloor." i thought the subs sounded ace everywhere

Richard was very kind to put myself and many other out-of-town performers up in cabins at the property, and perhaps as a result of our being accustomed to more conservative SPL, many of us stayed inside most of the weekend!

I fail to understand why an almost empty dancefloor (at the beginning of music at the main area) -- or even a dancefloor of several hundred people, as it was at several times during the event -- deserves to be blasted with constant "pain threshold" SPL for 40+ hours. reminded me very much of a rock'n'roll show

I already pointed out my need for ear protection -- but are you just making the assumption that everyone who isn't deaf or masochistic already has protection?

enough said, I'm bringing plugs next time so I can shut up and enjoy. good luck with symbiosis this year!

cheers,
alex

At one point in the night on Saturday, I was asked to turn it down a little, which I did. Other than that there were no complaints. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you thought it was too loud, you could have simply made mention to Rich or one of the other organizers, and the volume would have gone down a bit.

As far as adjusting levels throughout the event, please understand that it's a 40+ hour event and the sound guys have to sleep too. At some point the responsibility for adjusting the levels to the size of the crowd lies with the DJ playing at that time. That being said, levels were lowered during the daytime, and raised for the headliners.

Finally, in regard to PAS. The company was bought by the chinese about a year ago. They're no longer considered a quality manufacturer, nor have they been for many years. My cabinets are far from stock, with many custom modifications made, and custom analog circuitry providing much of the processing. Anyone who was at the HowWeird St fair in 2006 could tell you that the CCC stage we did sounded much different than the Lowpro Lounge stage that had a brand new PAS line array (same exact cabinets). Like night and day, in fact.

See ya at Symbiosis! Bring your ear plugs and we'll try to make sure you don't need to use them
