<<wether scientific or spiritual, everyone has their views on sound... personally i think spirituality and science are the same thing if you go deep enough in both>> Would be cool to see what peoples views on what sound is and how it effects things

------------ here is some 'science'

when you hear a sound, d'you know what it is? its just the movement of particles. (yes its physical)

example:
hit the table with your hand.

the sound you hear is the movement of the atoms in the table and your hand, moving, because of the impact, and hitting each other, the displaced/moving atoms (vibration) then make the atoms in the air around them move, which cause a domino effect of moving atoms untill the moving atoms in the air hit your eardrum, which then moves and your body senses it.

I'll prove it. Hit the table harder.

it makes a louder sound. Thats because of using more force you have displaced more particles.

sound is physical. If you stick paper infront of large speaker and blast the volume. the paper will tear.

how does a speaker make a sound? well in simple terms its the inverse / opposite of an eardrum. if you look really close at a speaker that curved shape thing vibrates, (in some speaker you cant see it) these vibrations make the atoms in the air around it move, which then make other atoms move because of collision, eventually the moving atoms chair reactions reaches your eardrum and makes your eardrum vibrate.

why do you not hear sound in space. Becuase the density of particles /atoms is too low, so even though force may displace an atom, the next atom is too far away for it to effect, so no chain reaction of moving particles.

so when you stand in a dancefloor with really loud music, all the atoms in your body are actually moving. sound is physical.

so sound actually effects the physical properties of a space.
Now if you know anything about physics, quantum physics, relativity etc... and know about a scientific term called 'Spacetime', which was coined by people like Einstein, you will realize how powerful sound actually is because it is changing the physical properties of a space. This becomes even more powerful when you realize that linear time does not exist (its an illusion, an illusion we do need however).... and that what we call time is actually dependant on the physical properties of a space. A space which sound changes the physical properties of.

If you keep going and going with this kind of thought you reach a point that kind of says that everything in the universe is sound.

I got a question regarding sound. When I'm listening to music in my headphones and I yawn, I notice the music speeds up a little, then returns to its normal speed when the yawn is done. What causes that?

ok, let me know if I'm mistaken. So yawning affects the space in the middle ear. Contracting it. thereby compressing the sound and effectivly 'speeding up' the tempo of the music?

try looking at a digital clock while yawning...

P.s. Thanks for that information.. it is great to see such great topics on this board for a change..

p.s.s. so what track makes your atoms move the most ?? LOL !! !;)           www.jesterrecords.ca

Anyone who has done "enough" LSD knows that time is as fast as we perceive it.

Time flies when your having fun = Yawning is fun.

So is sneezing... someone once described an orgasm as "its like you sneeze, between your legs".

I once listened to a Koxbox live set, and I was so confused over it, since I thought the tempo went up and down inside the tracks. I couldnt understand why they were messing with the pitch like that, and I thought it was rather amateurish of them, which didnt make sense - afterall, it was Koxbox.
Its actually also a very good example of how drugs can ruin a musical experience, since it sounded like shit, it sounded MUCH better when I was sober. (Anyone who knows Koxbox´s older music will know its very psychedelic).

Later I found out that happened often when I did enough LSD. Very embarrassing because I had been telling people, quite stubbornly, that I heard those things, ergo, they must be true ! hehe

I said I was yawning, not on LSD.

Still waiting for somebody (janux or t_o_a) to confirm this:

You wrote more in a poetic way than in a scientific way... If I would follow your logic than every kind of movement change the properties of space, and I won't say this is wrong, but just that this change means nothing, it's so small it is just not taken into consideration, and note that, for example even the energy of a bird flying is greater than the energy of most sound waves.

Also saying that linear time does not exist may sound beautiful to many people, but in fact, in real life conditions (unless you live near the event horizon of some black hole) its just false. If you think I'm wrong just prove it, by sending me today a PM from 2004 or 2010. (that was just a joke, I hope I'm not sounding arrogant ).

Nice topic, it's good to see how different people see the world with different eyes, and even better is to notice that people with different opinions respect each other's points of view.

sound is a powerful force and people (scientists) haven't explored the possibilities enough. we are dominated
by the eyes and neglect our ears.

interesting books about sound:

semi scientific but mostly philosophical:

joachim-ernst berendt: nada brahma - the world is sound
joachim-ernst berendt: the third ear

scientific approach:

harry f. olson: music, physics and engineering
sir james jeans: science & music
(no, i didn't make the name up )

it's said that tibetan monchs have the means to move big rocks with sound (they sit around the rock and start chanting).
