Here in Toronto I tried to throw some of the psy scene's progressive offerings at the prog crowd and they just weren't interested in it... conversely I've tried to find prog outside of the psychedelic scene that I would enjoy but I usually find it too cheezy, too underdeveloped, badly produced (or different from what I like anyway), dull, etc... no luck finding anything I like as much as Vibrasphere, Son Kite, Magnetrixx etc... but it remains a real mystery why these supposedly world-class prog types here in T.O. have never heard of Ticon and that sort of thing... weird!

Thats because people are morons.. they like DJ's as apose to artists, thinking that the dj makes all his tracks... plus, its easyer to remember the name of one dj, as apose to the 16-20 tracks used in his set..

Maybe you're just playing for the wrong people. Or maybe some education would do the trick? A lot of DJ's are afraid to educate people because they are afraid they'll loose their gigs if they play some variated music

Why Dj should play variated music ?

what if you think you like psychedelic progressive like Son Kite everybody need to like it and became more educated after hearing it ?

Dj play music for ppl and not for himself ..... to keep his or her job the ppl want is the main thing ..... then we have different styles of music to pleasure all ppl ..... even Acid fans who are very low in numbers ...

Why Dj need to educate ? is he a teacher / prophet ?,, or maybe he need to play music to pleasure ppl who want to dance .... let me share secret with you ...many many not even care who play and what ... cows want something cheap and recogniseble form MTV (better song by chix like um Britney Spears or chix like um Nick Carter)

clubs are for sex search and bit of alcohol , psy parties for drug users

very small number of ppl do care about music and it's the main reason to come ....

some search for community that will accept them ....

so who do you want to educate : drugs users , guys/girls who search for easy fuck or the "educated" ones ?

as Clown said all of you morons unless you know to cook ......

Lately i been thinking about the music coming out by progressive artists on progressive psy labels and as you probably know quite a bit of it deosnt have the "psy" sound. (eg. Ryan Halifax on new Plusquam comp). In fact to me it sounds more similar to music by "proper" progressive artists like chab and marc 'o tool (im no expert on this style but really like some of it too). Im just wondering why they continue to market this stuff to the psy community when i thought it would be more appreciated plus get a better chance of sales if they push it at the straight progressive crowd. Maybe they are marketing it there already and i just dont see it? Anyway please this is not a complaint as i really dig some of this stuff...just a curious thought.

I don't understand why people have to talk so much bullshit, if you don't have anything to say regarding the topic don't post anything at all.
How did this topic ended talking about easy fucks?

i think that we need a strict separation of prog and psy.

-prog/ house/ groovy are for the body

-psy is mental - for the head/ stomach/ heart mostly

lots of producers releasing under the psy label would better fit elsewhere, and many people releasing under other labels would fit well into the psy genre...
it is true that the categories are melting, BUT THAT´S A PROBLEM OF LAX CATEGORISATION....

if the categories were clear there would be no problem, cause it is obvious that the goa/ psy tradition aims something totally different than the clubby (material/ body...) orientated scene (i´m not valueating anything here - everything has it´s place, eligibility and right, but melting together what does not belong together is lame and harms both...

Two points:
- why segregate? had a segregation always been in place I might not have learned of this great music...
- and c'mon ppl, some people are better off ignored in this thread and others *ahem*

This is way to wrong.
Lately I find more mental progressive house tunes, than those pumping 145 bpm beats ecstasy orientated.
Don't judge this kind of music if you don't know it...

no segregation of people, just segregation of content...
all people are welcome, as long as they follow the main objectives of a psychedelic culture (peace, nullification of ego/ mystical experience, weirdness, extasy, love, deep emotions, humaneness.
this is not fascist at all, it´s just "anti sell-out".
respect to all other (peaceful) ambitions, no problem with commercial stuff either, but they just don´t belong to "psychedelia".

I agree with Boy George on this one, to paraphrase "Techno is for guys who haven't learned how to use their hips." What he means here is that the higher-BPM four-on-the-floor genres don't facilitate using the hips, hence ALOT OF TRANCERS dance with the legs. House and the mainstream trance (aka progressive, cheesy, not NRG) have BPM's below 135. At these tempos its alot easier to swing (those hips). I think it makes all the difference in the world as to why lots of people aren't into psytrance (145++ BPM, kick on the 1). It really helps to be blitzed on E or Ass-ed to synchronize with those 145++ tempos. At least with DnB, the beat is broken up a bit allowing you to contort like Gumby. Certainly I enjoy contorting and twisting to psy.

The "psy" prog artists still use alot of gritty sounds, this is part of psy genre carryover, and tend to use less anthematic melodies or chord changes. As a matter of fact it seems that most psy-prog, especially northern european, artists use the same old minor chord stab war horse. Of course we need our sweet lovely female voice because we know the music is written by a couple computer nerds, balance is good. Lots of folk want some catchy melody or hook, the same catchy hook that sells millions of albums in other parts of the world. So it seems there are fundamental differences between psy-prog and Sasha-Digiweed-prog-trance, and it shows in the populace. We want the cheese, we jaded old fucks. "Shake you body!....Everybody!"

So, I can kind of see why maybe your mainstreamers in Canada might not respond as enthusiastically as you, the secretly-listens-to-psytrance-DJ.

Submit and surrender to the vibe...Be like the rest of us.
