New progressive trend?

I’ve noticed lately that old and good progressive artists are turning into house music.
Take for example the new Haldolium or S.BK c.d. Almost no psychedelic elements, just some groovy housy tune.
What’s going on? The good giant artists are turning their back? Are they “settling down”? Are they trying to play in both fields - trance and house?

I am also a little frustrated with this trend lately but I am trying to keep an open mind.
I don't think they are chasing after the house fans, we will have to ask the Doctor about this, but I don't think they really improve their sales or radio play by doing this.
I honestly think they are just trying to seperate themselves from the standard minimal/progressive music which has reached yet another turning point.
I think Pearl Jam said it best: "It's Evolution Baby!"
If you think Haldolium and SBK are making house then just wait for the new Green Oms CD to come out. You ain't seen nothing yet.           Both teams played hard

i don't think it's something we need to worry about. some of our trax have got house like grooves and others a techno like groove. trance has always been influenced by many types of music. that's what i love about it.

OK. First of all we must diferentiate between different types of house. Yahel and his uplifting melodic friends as opposed to the Progressive dark house stuff in the Bedrock style.

Alot of the minimal/progressive artists have gone over to the dark prog-house simply cause it became so close to the trance they used to make. and with a higher market potential and very high music similarity it's no surprise. Also I belive that prog-house is more danceable then Minimal trance today so unless you are making full on it's either Techno or House that u end up sounding like.           Kinetic Honda GmbH, Worldwide Supliers of Quality noise.

I consider this to be a worrying trend. More & more psy artists are turning toward prog house, and psytrance is gradualy becoming "music for the Masses".

The phenomenon started a while ago, and has produced both positive & negatve releases. Plusquam records for example, present us with a clubby/housey psytrance, but they stay true to the basic roots of our psychedelic music for wich I admire them , and I think they have released some great music lately. On the other hand, we have artists like SBK & Atmos, who have been releasing pure prog house lately. This music may appeal to some, but i cannot put this in the same cattagory as psytrance... I just hope that prog house won't completely take over our scene           MiniMAL cabron...

Well, I just think that people figured out something. Psychedelia doesn't sell. Why make psychedelic music when you can make far less ambitious music which is more danceable, easier to sell and is easier to work in a formula with.

GMS did it in full-on long ago - and they're considered the full-on revolutuionaries as opposed to Tim Schuldt who is all but forgotten. It was just a matter of time before progressive leaves the underground as well. People aren't looking for psychedelia anymore. The mainstream of the trance scene is becoming less and less underground with time.

Again, the psychedelia lovers can just wait for the next Twisted or Spirit Zone release (the last two MAJOR labels that make psychedelic music, since Dragonfly and TIP have obviously moved away from that trend in favor of better sales), or move to Finnish music. Son Kite, Cosma, Haldolium, Alegria, Antix, Ticon, The Delta, GMS, Astrix... they may be proffesional, and definately make intelligent and deep music, but it's not psytrance anymore. It's barely even trance. It's something new, without that underground spirit that kept breaking new boundries throughout the 90s.

Or I just might not agree with this trend, and am rationalizing my living in the past. Whatever.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Nothing stays the same forever and that's good though. If not it would be boring pretty soon.

I don't think that there is "danger" coming from artists doing a bit of house style music. If they are not original in what they are doing, they will not go very far anyway.... at least in our community

kaz - your words were so wonderful and true I really couldn't have said it better than you.

I just want to add something,
ppl tend to relate an artist who was making psytrance in the past, to the same artist who is making prog-house in the present - and keep saying that it's trance and it's the progression of trance music.

a good example of this is the psyshop.com website, which mostly was selling trance related CDz, will continue sell a CD even if it isn't trance just because of the artist performing it.

If that artist suddenly tries electronic country music, with singing and everything, which doesn't sound psy at all, would it be sold on psyshop.com or etc. ? Think about it.

Not every past-trance artist's music which is making music today should be considered as trance or the progression of trance music. That's the mistake I IMHO think ppl are making these days and of course labels/shops which are pushing it forwards.

So if we keep listening to guys like Atmos and Ticon because we know they USED to make psytrance, then are there artists out there that USED to make house/prog music and are now making psytrance? Are they being ignored because of their past?
Does every new artist nowadays need to decide before his first release what genre he wants to be a part of?           Both teams played hard
