I have been to psy parties/festivals on 4 different continests and know what you are trying to say Janux. Its just that I believe the connections are extremly complex and that psy communities are some how outside the normal rules and "national restrictions".

Imo an important factor to focus on is the musical history of these countries. How did electronic music develop there, what are its roots. How mainstream is it? How dominant has the influence of psychedelic culture on electronic music been in that culture?

But anyhow: In order to do this how would we begin? One starting point would be determining which styles are prefered in what countries.
The difficulties start here already and would need a massive Psy-census/questionaire or something. For some countries its easier than others, for some impossible maybe. Im sure if I try to categorise many people will not agree, but I will try for the fun of it:

I am only generalising:

Israel - Full On
Thailand - Full On
Brazil - Full on and progressive split
Mexico - Full on
Russia - "Dark", psycore
Germany - Progressive
Scandinavia (Sweden, Denmark) - Progressive

Hm cant really do it, so hard to categorise. I give up:(

Pls give me some examples

All I can say Russia is innocent on the charge of excessive ***Fluff*** "pollution".

OK I'll have a go...

I'm typing this out quite fast, so hope my judgements dont upset anyone, and i am talking about general masses, so if you dont fit in to the description pls dont get upset, we are all individuals but generalizations and patterns also exist...

Russia - harsher climate, volatile history, financial imbalance, people used to heavy situations --> Very strong people, physically and psychologically, hard music, more cryptic, no fluff, very psychedelic and intense.

UK. easier lifestyle, more money around in general, stable situations, ---> party scene in London has lots of proggy music, and the fullon stuff can be quite light.... sometimes fluff scene.... lots of good stuff too because the UK has been part of psy production since the beginning

India... full on crazy high energy music and also people like dark twisted music... psychedelic in both styles..... most people dont like fluff--> very diverse country, emotional people, not a very easy lifestyle for everyone... old culture with lots of cosmic understand and mystical views … combination of mystical outdoor life and fast paced city life...

Scandanavian countries ---->
long winter 6 months of darkness --> lots of good dark artists...
long summer, climate one style, not a very diverse culture, no financial issues --> lots of progressive artists.

USA ---> scene there is a mix of raver people and psy people, diverse tastes in music becuase USA is itself a diverse place... people there more open to non psy stuff that is close to psy.... also in general not too much hard dark stuff.... life and wealth there is easy.... the people in the US who like the darker stuff are from countries who like that stuff etc....

Israel... ---> high energy psychedlic music, not too much dark stuff... volitile political situation, people wanna party and have a good time and forget about their time in the army. thats why not too much dark stuff.... proggy scene in israel too, and recently some fluff coming out of israel... lots & lots of artists from israel in general, emotional people, very psychedelic dance oriented culture, kabalah etc...? mystical + new world travellers.

Portugal ---> many people there like day music and often some of it fluffy, beautiful landscapes, emotional people --> lots of killer psychedlic day & night artists---> combination of good lifestyle, but also not too much commercial wealth.

Mexico, --à full on layered psychedelic stuff…. San pedro. Peyote, he he he ….. emotional people, shamanic, mystical.

Brazil. Fun loving extroverted party people, can have a good time with anything, sunny day type psychology… totally full on music… not too intense, more rocking stuff, positive. Fluff also goes well there too… but more involved stuff goes well there too…. Also a mystical background

Spain. Lots of killer music in my opinion. More day stuff than night, powerful music mostly, not too much fluff…. Sensual culture, dynamic history, lots of different cultural influences on spain because of their history and mediteranian locations

Japan. You can play anything in Japan the people will love it…. Japanese people in general are closed to other cultures, but a lot of the youth in this generation are breaking that mold and are actually very open to new things, and they love to hero worship DJs and Artists…. So they will like it all. However, they wont like proggy stuff so much, their minds are quite involved and speeded up so they simply want a higher bpm, but the style of music doesn’t matter.

France - Again a culture that is influenced by many factors I think… many musical styles there mostly full on styles… their dark stuff is not too heavy, and their day stuff is not too fluffy…. They pay attention to detail a lot in life and it shows in their music. Artistic culture in general and it shows in their music…. Emotional people, so less proggy stuff….

South Africa, very unique culture influenced by european ways of thinking and ethnic african rhythms, psychology, and landscapes... their music is hardly ever fluff, always more tribal yet very new sounding, full on stuff is layerd and intense, and dark stuff has lots of tribal power in it.           www.facebook.com/DjJanux

not a bad generalization.....i would say........

mexico is starting to have more progressive elements to it......xibalba, jey ex and many others.....

australia i would say to generalize has really provided some 'delicious' 'chunkadelic' dark progressive minimal sounds....

india.....very "melodic" and "uplifting spiritual" to very "dark" and "disturbed" music........one spectrum to the other........

those are just a couple i added........

since we were generalizing........i figured id give it a crack at it.....            "On the path of spirituality, one ventures to vanquish one’s own faults rather than to judge others"

India is there on my list also:

India... full on crazy high energy music and also people like dark twisted music... psychedelic in both styles..... most people dont like fluff--> very diverse country, emotional people, not a very easy lifestyle for everyone... old culture with lots of cosmic understand and mystical views … combination of mystical outdoor life and fast paced city life...           www.facebook.com/DjJanux

Nice Janux, you evaluated everything pretty well and gave some good reasoning imo. I agree on most points, I especially like the descriptions for Russia, Scandinavia, India and Israel.

So can we draw any conclusions? Like maybe:

(This is only off the top of my head, just generalizing, propably most of it cannot be applied anyhow...dont mean to offend anyone, just for fun).

-More somber, rational cultures with less sunshine tend to like less fluffy sounds. This would apply to counties such as Scandinavia, Germany, Russia and England to some extent. England only to some extent because more influenced by club culture than raw out door sound.

-People in countries facing greater internal problems may take greater liking to lighter sounds as it serves as a better distraction from daily worries. (Like the example of some Israeli trancers wanting to push aside their tough time in the army).

-Another reaction towards internal social hardship may be a swing in the opposite direction where the sound reflects the rhythm of life. (an example could be Russia...although politically stabile and developing rapidly there is imbalance of wealth and a high crime rate..South Africa also). "Fluff" is generally disliked here.

-Regions with high economic development and socio-economic stability tend to reach a point where the sound becomes more "progressive".

-In countries where the above is combined with mediteranean conditions and "sunnier" mentality the result often is a movement towards diversity of sound rather than a move into the progressive side of things. (emotional reaction rather than striving for "perfection of sound).
(France, Portugal, Greece, Spain). This can lead to more fluffy sound apperaring along with other emerging genres.

-Countries with high cultural diversity may spawn a greater spectrum of styles or develop new styles as a result (USA, Brazil, South Africa).

-Cultures where mystic/spiritual beliefs are ingrained in the fabric of society prefer a more overtly psychedelic sound, often resulting in less fluff. (India, to some extent Mexico).

I also believe that the more developed, bigger and more commercial a national scene becomes the more room there is for fluff.

Hm Im sure there is more points that can be argued but I am out of ideas :/

So whats the most important factor affecting acceptance of fluff? xD
