Hippie : I basically fell in Love with Psychedelic Trance because I feel somehow that is is the fruit of an interbreeding between all the styles of music, electronic especially.. There is like a family tie which makes obsolete the term of "superiority" in my opiniOn..

But in a way I understand what U mean, for sure !
However it is not enough to consider it as superior... it's just a nonsense

I would not be able to only affirm that trance is superior than reggae because it is NOT ! would be a shame to say that... one can not compare them in such a so reducing way..

We speak about "spirituality"..... if there is any spirituality somewhere I believe that it is in the connection that exists between all musical "genre". None of them could exist without the others.. everything is somehow "justified" like in the Nature.. But of course there is some stuff in a way corrupted by economic aimings of some 'majors' A&R... but this is another story...           .

maybe you and me are not on the same frequency Kako...

Deep Forest is one of my favourites bands ..the only one band whose music i never stoped to listen ....for years

by the way ...i like your website ....colors and webdesign ...keep up good work           Dream is my world. Goa is my motherland. Trance is my religion. Flying is my life.

Thanx a loooot Hippie

I am on the SAME frequency when U express yourself like that ! My only problem was the word "superiority"... which has nothing to do with spirituality ! There I understand U much better ! And I am glad that U listen to such various genres

About a band that I never stopped listening for years..... mmmmh I would say Beastie boys HeHe

Thanx again for the compliment about my website... means a lot for me !

Regards..           .

Do you think that the trance party is a ritual for the 21st century? If so is it a secular ritual or a religious one? Does it replace your family inherited religion(if you have one)?           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

No need to be sorry mate. I was just telling you since it might be more interesting to continue that debate. As I recall it was quite interesting Even though I dont agree that trance nessesarily have to be linked with religion/sprituality. I am though aware of that many people still into doing drugs can get that vision

humm, trance...spiritual...?

very curious to see this topic, i have been going to
some clubs latelly and trying to "get" whats the diference betwen psy and euro trance or some house music. Not the diference in terms of music itself offcourse, thats too obvious, but in terms of what we feel when we hear it.

What I realized is that club music brings kind of a feeling of man-woman love, like kind of a dating feeling, with all the lirics like "love is in the air", and "love is all around", they have the word love in most of the lirics, lol. Its made for clubs, where mostly everyone is going around looking to meet someone special lolll.

But psy trance (mostly talking israeli style) also gives me a sensation of love, but its not the same kind of love, its a very diferent feeling. Its the feeling of love for everyone and everything around me, the feeling of love to be alive, its just beautifull and unique to everyone

So I guess i would say that house and euro trance would be more of a sexual directed music, and psy trance more directed for a spiritual journey...

Humm...but isn't our sexuality also a sipitual thing?...

For me trance used to be extremely spiritual, not because of the beat actually but because of the floating sequences and layers and the general feeling that tracks are built layers upon layers. Also trance mostly doesnt have lyrics, so there is nothing to get u distracted from the rhythm and the patterns of sound.

I believe that it is pure personal experience tho, and in the same time I experienced strong spiritual feeling during certain set other ppl may felt something completely different.

Nowadays tho, most of trance doesnt seem to go that way.. Either it is extremely aggressive and then the spirituality somehow dissolves, or it is so 'progressive' that there is not much feeling left in it to enhance the spiritual experience.

There are some artists tho, that still do extremely spiritual music, and this is very nice since that is what I like to hear.           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

Psy trance is bloody amazing music. It has an emotional power lacking in many forms of dance music, largely due to the fact that that much of it is in minor keys, which trigger certain feelings. The huge basslines compel you to dance and a long session on the dancefloor (with or without drugs) is one of the most cathartic things you can do. I usually walk away feeling totally cleansed and focussed. This, to me makes up any 'spiritual' aspect to the music.
The fact is though, that I get this feeling if I've been grooving to Deep House, Acid Tekno, Jungle, Breaks OR Psytrance. I love them all. (Although trance and tekno come top)

My only problem with psytrance, in fact, is the pseudo 'spirituality' associated with it. Samples in tracks that go "Trancendental meditation" or "Shiva, Shiva, Shiva" for example and UV Hindu gods and UV Stars of David at parties are pretty tasteless if you ask me. I can't see that religion has any place at a party that's supposed to be celebrating our coming together from different cultures all over the globe.           "One nation under a groove".

throw music(especialy trance) we can connect with other people in a spiritual way..when we dance and we abstract ourselfs from reality..we enter a "special magical dimention...." that state of abstraction can be understood as a spiritual ritual...i understand trance as an electronic mantra, that makes me travel into an infinity world of imaginary realities.           myspace.com/trashdealers

There is only a vague contact between spirituality and religion and mostly derives from governments / politicians / educational systems wish to make this connection.

Spitrituality doesnt necessarily have to be certain religion but a feeling of something growing, very intense and focused, feeling of joy and the power of nature.. Ofcourse all these cant be explained with words, but it shouldnt be ALWAYS a religious thing           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

Although many people listen to PSY/GOA trance for many different reasons, This music was founded on the basis of spritual ritualistic dance. Just as the natives used dance for spirituality. The quote below was taken from a GOA GIL interview. He is one of the founders of GOA trance, so I think that should define it's origin and actual purpose. Now, people may make and experience this music for different reasons, but that is how it originated.

"We are using Trance music and the Trance Dance Experience to set off a chain reaction in consciousness…. This is what we call "Redefining the Ancient Tribal Ritual for the 21st Century". When I come to the party and set up my alter, sprinkle the Holy Water, recite the Holy Mantra, and make the Offering to the Cosmic Spirit, and then start the music… The music and the whole party becomes an offering to the Cosmic Spirit… May Lord Shiva, Nataraj, Lord of the Dance come to this place and bless everyone. Then the dancers, the music, the dj, the Spirit, all become One. OM NAMAH SHIVAYA !!!!! HARA HARA MAHADEV !!!!! Dance… …dance is active meditation…. ….When we dance, We go beyond thought, beyond mind, and beyond our own individuality… To become One in the Divine Ecstasy of union with the Cosmic Spirit…. This is the essence of the Trance Dance Experience."

Even though I am willing to agree with you half/half Uncle Bob then it's again only Goa Gills interpretation and vision of how it all originated if you ask other "pioneer's" they might tell you different stories... Again it's all up to who you talk to And there's for sure not only one truth. Goa originate from early techno and house which were not at all seen as spiritual. See my point?

But I am aware of that a lot of the so-called Goa music was seen as spiritual and a music originated from Goa even though the majority of the artists that followed never went to Goa at all

I for sure never went to Goa but my music was categorised as Goa (I think it would have been more cool to be catergorise it "Copenhagen Trance" ...LOL)

well, i dont know if music is a spiritual thing but i belive in some cases a person can get into a state of mind where he's more focused and that will bring him into somekind of "level" where he's more connected to his spiritual side.

music talks to the soul, and imo trance does it in its best way.

let's not try to discuss Spirituality in this thread, cos that's one different chapter.

coming back to the music and whether music can be spiritual.

There are many forms of music which are not fast paced which can touch you in a manner that cannot be described in words. All of that is spiritual.

The problem sometimes is that the lyrics get in the way if you are not in the moment and trance luckily does not have that to distract you, keeping you in the moment more easily.
