Interesting analogy with the rock guitarist... I do see the point you are making about trance being less about traditional music training, but for me that's what makes this style of music different than most other forms of music. When jazz started becoming more popular, it received a lot of criticism from other classically trained musician. Some of the comments made were that the people didn't know how to play music, so they just made it up as they went along. It was said that the composers of jazz music had no musical skills whatsoever and just scribbled random notes on a score.

Psychedelic music as a whole has come under fire many times by the traditional music community because the traditional music community was so rigid about what they felt was correct that anything outside of their paradigm was considered unmusical and "just noise". Nowadays, people like Hendrix and co. are considered pioneers by the same community that called their musical experimentation noise. One of the concepts that was introduced by dance music was the concept of the Temporary Autonomous Zone, or T.A.Z. for short. (my middle name's Tazmond btw)

What a TAZ is is an area created for a short period of time where the general rules of society are suspended or are different than the status quo. In a sense that is something that is expressed in this music. Take your normal music including most other genres of dance music, many of the genres have sounds very similar to traditonal instruments.
Psychedelic trance has a lot of "otherworldly" sounds in it. Now there are some artists that do use a lot of "real" instruments in their music with psychedelic trance. However generally the traditional concept of what is considered musical and what is not is warped, and you have a lot of bleeps and bloops and random strange noises that are not only psychedelic for some people but musical as well.

Humanity as a culture has been raised thinking that only certain types of sounds are considered musical, but those that have experienced psychedelics tend to encounter things that are outside of their general scope of reality, and these things can indeed carry a similar meaning as what is in their general scope of reality. I personally feel that the wild card that makes this music special is the fact that what is psychedelic is indeed subjective. It does vary from person to person and I like computer noises. If you don't, that's perfectly ok... But I think that you are seeking something specific out of trance that maybe psychedelic trance might not have for you. There's a question that's has been haunting me since the start of this thread. What do you consider to be psychedelic sounding?

well i think that in the end it's up to the promoters/organizers to decide who's in and who's not... and if people don't take the time and bother to check out dj sets and the dj's materials and style..
we might end up getting less non-musicians in the scene...
cheerz y'all.. interesting topic..

That's a statement I don't actually understand Silent Scream, so if they are producing music for the dancefloor, then they aren't creative and kill the dancefloor??? I find that to be the inverse IMO. There are many artists that are going more for the home listening aspect and making these incredible soundscapes, but with little dancefloor energy. I find I tend to dance less when there are tracks that don't have as much dancefloor energy. Now there is stuff that is very dancefloor friendly, but leaves a little to be desired when it comes to psychedelic soundscapes. To be honest, I don't even understand why there should be any competition between artists, it really isn't about who's better than who, it's more about being able to tell your story and hopefully people will connect to it.

I am very picky about the stuff that makes me move and I think there is room for all of it, it just depends on when it's played. Now I do make music for the dancefloor. That's where I developed my love for the music and some of my favorite moments were on the dancefloor. Homelistening stuff can be great while at home and not really into dancing, but I have a hard time finding as much of an appreciation for it hearing it at a party during certain times. For me the music does pack a lot of energy and a balance can be made between stuff for the head and stuff for the feet, but too much stuff for the feet makes the head bored and too much stuff for the head makes the feet bored.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I do belive there is music for all ocassions. Generalizing will not get us anywhere. SOmetime peak time will be mellower, sometimes full on, sometime psychotic. It is all about this communal feeling in the right here and now. I think all music has a chance. Now it is a matter of the DJs or artists taste and feeling to express and paint the air with the color of sound that works in the moment. I have been very polychromatic in my sets for a long time. I have forced dancers sometimes to overcome their own perceptions and understand music they would not have even thought possible to dance. All through the right set of tracks in a row to guide ppl and prepare them for something unexpected. Most of the times it has worked, other times I had a -ve reaction... but this is a psychedelic experience and I am ready to take a risk to open their mind as well as mine
