Hey guys i m saving for a eq and i need recomendation , i will use it mostly for electronic music, hiphop ,reggea,ragga...so something with good mojo is not a problem.

i was thinking too api 5500 that i used a little ,really nice low end and mids i like this eq but the highs are not really great so i think will pass on this one except if i find a great price, it s maybe to clean for me too.

avalon 2055

adesign em peq2

dunno about other candidates around 2500 new or second hand that could be well suited for my needs ? something steped would be nice even if it s not a must for me..

diy mastering eq i m intrested in too

the barry porter eq schematics are widely available, there's quite a lot of info on building one on the groupdiy forum (used to be called prodigy pro forum) i think, and it's supposed to be up there with sontec and maselec in sound quality. a lot of top mastering guys are using them now.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

beautiful! i wouldn't be surprised if those units would cost you more than 2500 though. is that $, £, or €? i'd be interested to know the price too!

i'm saving up for a dangerous music bax eq for the mastering chain at the moment, but that's more of a tone control/program eq/gentle shaping tool. if i got another EQ after that it would probably be a sontec.

one of the summit eq is supposed to be really good for electronic music mastering with a nice color but don't remmeber the one it is , i think it s the eqp 200 a or b and the stock tubes probably need to be replaced.
its inspired from a pultec eq but don't sound like it.

i'm currently using software for "surgical" stuff before i hit the analogue chain, and then a thermionic culture pullet partnered with a chandler tg2 (for makeup gain), for more gentle shaping. the pullet is also based on a pultec (not surprisingly), but with very different controls. it has the best mid boost i've ever heard, very natural sound. haven't tried the others of which you speak.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

for now i m intrested with the summit , it can be find at good price second hand and stick with plugins for chiurgical needs.

just runing the signal into the summit the sound is suposed to get more depth and a nice color, the low end is punchy and tight and the highs silky , great to add some nice air.
users report the signal never sound equed, it s a very musical colorfull eq.

yep, i've heard good things about summit gear, although not used any myself.

yeah some gear just sounds great even when it's set flat, probably just the circuitry and transformer colouration/saturation. my chandler germ comps have that effect too. whatever you put through them just comes out sounding better, more solid etc. i have ten transformers total in the chain! perhaps not the best thing for classical or jazz mastering, but since 99.9% of the stuff i receive was done mostly ITB, it's usually just what the doctor ordered.

the tg2 is great, it's almost always used as make up gain for the pullet eq (i think i may have plugged a mic into it once!)

it has a very "present" sound, with some nice hefty colouration. really seems to make everything you pout through it sound more solid. hard to know how to describe it in words really!

the di's sound not that great with guitar or bass (where i use an avalon u5 instead), but really, really shine with synths. my old korg wavestation ex would come alive when fed to the tg2. great for warming up cold stereo digital synths!

yeah, and definitely agree, you really need to try things in your own studio before plonking down cash. luckily in milan i have a friend that works at funkyjunk, and they have a good rental policy. if you decide to buy it in the end, you don't have to pay the rent!

been lusting after a bax eq since they came out, will hopefully be able to afford one this year!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

nice chandler stuff seems really great heard only good things about this brand.
there is a funkyjunk here too,i will go their trying some eqs for sure !

still don't know and i will probably change my choice few times till i have the cash, but a flexible mastering eq could be nice too but they cost a arm and a legg !!

the ibis is my dream , it s suposed to be really well suited for electronic music mastering with the adjustable color, 3800euros at thoman ouch but i though it was even more expensive tbh..maybe second hand .

i was lusting the bax eq too , it s suposed to have great sounding high / low Pass butterworth filters

yeah my chandler germ comps are my favourite pieces of gear EVER! been using them daily for about four years now, and still learning new ways to use them. nothing but praise for chandler gear!

never tried the ibis either, but cranseong is another brand with an incredibly good reputation, and i know a few people using the HEDD converter or the avocet monitor controller. all happy people!

yes, not sure if i'll ever be able to afford a top end mastering EQ, but i do lust after one! the gyraf audio and the knif audio eqs are other high end eq fetish objects of mine!

http://gyraf.dk/g14/index.html

http://www.knifaudio.com/cgi-bin/view_eng.cgi?page=soma

the bax is basically a really nice tone control with steep high quality LP and HP filters on either end. great as an overall shaping tool, and am hoping to put it last in the analogue chain before hitting the crookwood capture ADC.

where are you based? i'm in milan, but have friends and family in the uk and japan. if you ever make it over let's go for a beer!
