Fake live sets

This faking live set thing has really started to piss me off... I'm sure there are a number of artists that do it.... its a disgrace... its weak, its cowardly. I mean if you really think about it... its not only faking a live set... its even faking a dj set... because there is no mixing going on... just standing around and pretending. or a little tweaking here and there.
I know the artists make the music themselves, but when playing at parties its not about that,
Its about community, about playing with a crowd and letting the crowd effect the dj like the dj effects the crowd.. not about letting a mix play and then jumping around in synch with the musical changes so that the dancelfoor thinks you are mixing it in the present. artists like that just live in the past and should stay in the past.

I really think people should come up with ways of making this stop... any ideas?

I had this experience with a well-kinown live i booked to Poland recently. When I asked them what they need they said: 24 channel mixer with parametric EQ, Delay unit (prefably TC Electronics), midi keyboard and SH-101. I thought sounds interesting.....until they arrived plugged in a stereo out from their PC with Ableton Live (with one long track on it), plugged in an SH-101 through the delay and connected a micro clavia to the midi keyboard. And there were 2 of them becuase one couldn't do it by himself. I was only booking the artist for a promoter but if it had been my own party I think that I wouldn't have paid for this crap.

But what can you do ? People want to see a live and they can't tell the difference from the dancefloor. All they see is 2 guys going crazy on stage ..............

c'est la vie, I guess          The truth is out there .........somewhere

You know, you have a good point. What do you do? Give the crowd what they think they are getting or disappoint them and say it is only a DJ set.

Who looks bad in the end in that case? The promoter. I think the artist should be honest. When a promoter has to rent equipment for no reason at all, that takes away their "bottom line". I think the artist should refund that out their "bottom line". It's sad and disgraceful making someone pay for unecessary equipment to say the least.....It's right up there with promoters who say someone is playing live on the flier, website and everything else, even though they've known only one member of the group is coming and don't bother to say they're only DJing until the day of or the day before...

I am happy to know that TROMESA is not one of them...Much love and respect TOMEK

I know of one act that totally does everything live: Autechre. But they're not in the psytrance scene. They fit in the techno scene. I wouldn't know an act in psytrance which totally does everything live on stage.

classic music even got more "channels" and they're still able to do it all totally live.

i dont mind too much the live thingie...but its cool to see a "real" live act on a huge setup.           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

You cant make a FULL LIVE - at least I cant, but I can try to make it as much Live as possible. Most of us put a CD in the CD player and pretend ourselves, with serious mimmicks and full on looks           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

I think a fully live set is asking a lot but tweaking track as you go and dropping in different lines at the right time feels good and pretty live for a fully synthetic sound. Look at how the X-Dream boys do it, it's all about creating a quality live mix and filling as many channels with fresh sounds. We don't need theese vast cheating live line ups though. Whatever happened to the good old days where you had 3-4 great DJ's playing the goodies they were really into and one like act thrown in as a treat. With all this pressure on artists to perform live what do you expect...

I don't know much about music making but... sound effects can always be done live. Nuff said.           Ut ameris, amabilis esto.

i know i MUCH prefer dj'ing my own music to playing a semi live set... here in Oz, we are always being thrown on in different time slots, which calls for often different feels to the music. Dj'ing your own music you can read the crowd and drop whatever's gonna do the trick for that instant. I make a folder of one track per cd. so i can always put in whatever i want next...
playing live is great, but inflexible, unless of course you are more than one person and able to make a promotor hire half a sound shop for you!           the FATLINE is ending www.myspace.com/suncontrolspecies

and 'live' classical music is done with a LOT more people, too. Maybe if you had a symphony with dozens of artists you can make this happen too. This would be actually very interesting!

i think we have less fake live sets behind the decks as we have drugged dancing people in front of it.
so where is the fake here?

With Bigwigs and Tromesa we use the pc as a sequencer but also add some loops, samples, sounds and fx that are not in the original versions. We are still limited by the arrangement since it's running from a computer but can play around with the arrangement etc.
this is how we do it with bigwigs (tromesa too but only 1 sampler):
2 samplers (ESI 4000 turbo ZIP and E6400 Ultra) - total of 20 channels out.
Nordrack 2, 2 fx and compressor.
ONLY midi running from a laptop.
also 2 CDJ and mixer which I use to mix in loops and samples.
The rest is freestylin, jammin and playing around with the arrangements.          The truth is out there .........somewhere

hi tomek can you explain how you would play around with the arrangement when you play live? I mean if you wanted a certain section to go longer how would you do it?

loop the section?           Interviewer: "So Frank, you have long hair. Does that make you a woman?"
Frank Zappa: "You have a wooden leg. Does that make you a table?"
