I don't think it's changed in that time... plenty of parties but not many opportunities.

On a brighter note, here are the results of the 2011 free music survey:

Basilisk, may i ask why you offer both, FLAC and WAV for dowload? i'm sure you know that both are 100% lossless so everybody could easily compress WAVs or decompress FLACs after download. and you would save a lot of disk space (money).

just interested what's the reason for this.

It doesn't cost me any extra money to do it, just extra time. FLAC files can be tagged with metadata; WAVs cannot (not according to standards, anyway). On the other hand, you need to have installed the FLAC codec whereas WAVs can be burnt direct to CD without any extra work. There are good reasons for offering both so I do (even though FLAC is overwhelmingly my format of choice).

keep it free, its going well already.
about revenue, with this kind of setup, maybe some revenue can be generated from promotion of certain albums, whose artists or rec labels's are willing to pay say for.. 1 months promotion for say 20$ by ektoplazm using normal market line ways.i guess many artists and labels r interested in a PR representaion kind of a deal or something, which is lacking in every sense, because you will have to look at like a big label or something,.even if you get a handfull of label or artist wanting promotion you should provide some kindoff a deal for a small fee or some trik like that,it might help out on the montly rent or whatever it is,many ways to make dough bra,i dont know if this is possible,me just say, but revenue automaticallycomes when the horses are running full throtle, have pleasent and safe journeys

I apologize for not following through with an official announcement regarding the future of Ektoplazm. Turns out my travel plans were a pipe dream; no real support was forthcoming from festival organizers in Europe. I received many offers to play for kudos and beer tickets, but even covering travel expenses was too much for most. Well, no matter. I spent the last ten years dedicating myself to DJing and the label business as much as running the web site but it's really only music distribution that I'm known and valued for. I've had to be brutally honest with myself: DJing (and the politics of dancing) has become a source of frustration for me despite all the effort I've sunk into it. On the other hand, my efforts with Ektoplazm have been repaid a thousandfold. I suppose it should have been obvious all along where I should have been focusing my energy... but the two elements of my life have been so interlinked (Ektoplazm began as an extension of my DJing) that I've had a tough time separating the two.

After recalibrating my expectations on Koh Phangan I decided to return to Canada. Since then I've been trying to sort out the next move. Ektoplazm is a cool project and I don't want to give it up. At the same time I have slipped into debt and need to think about getting a "real job". The problem here is that Ektoplazm, in its present form, is already a full-time commitment of at least 40 hours a week! I can't really work and run the site as I have for years now. Something needs to change.

The good news is that I have a plan. I'm not quite ready to share it yet but I am working very hard on coming up with a solution--a way to really take Ektoplazm to the next level. I'm not sure if it'll work but it's worth a try... so stay tuned for more about the future of Ektoplazm... for real this time!

In the meantime I've been doing my best to churn through the backlog and share more great free music with the community. If you haven't stopped by in a while please be sure to check out the new offerings:

A note for label and artist partners: I can't promise to take on every new release sent my way but you're welcome to submit your releases for distribution this summer. I'm afraid I have no time to look at demos at present; only full, finalized releases will be considered. Interested in distribution? Read this:

Finally, I recorded a mix while in self-imposed exile on Koh Phangan. It is a snapshot in time, a throwback to the early days of Goa trance, and a tribute to the sound that got me hooked and led me to dedicate so much of my life to psytrance culture. Here it is:
