If I want to hear experimental music at a psytrance party, why do I need to wait until 10-11AM on the main stage? Because the DJs understand that unless you're famous no one will want you to do your own thing. If it would have been Youth squeezing in an Autechre track, everyone would say it rocked. Otherwise, people will just say the DJ stinks. Some DJs played a bit of downtempo 4x4 chill (@ Samothraki 2002) they were bashed for having a bassdrum/bassline, the next day Simon Posford decided to play the Propellorheads's remix of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (which isn't chilled at all) and was dubbed as a genius.

Why does everyone's idea of chillout have to be exactly in the Backroom Beats / LSD line? I find this much more troubling than the occasional DJ going overboard. The fact is that a bit of noise will scare off most pill munchers is no excuse for boring and relaxing being synonymous. And yes there are far more TOTALLY BORING chillout DJs than ones that scare off the crowd. That's why 99% of the sets in the chill-out area will leave absolutely no impression, and that's probably the main reason why people look down at the chill DJs.

Aiming for the mainstream is always the easiest thing to do. Just play some Massive Attack and the crowd is yours. Shpongle/Ott if it's a psytrance party. I prefer a DJ which has a bit more balls than that.

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING!!!

I think if the organiser has decided to stick an 'artcore headf*ck' DJ on in the 2nd space, then maybe it's not supposed to be a chill space, it's just supposed to be an alternative to the dance space. Note that many people just expect the 2nd space at a party to be a 'chill' space, whereas this may not be the intention, it may just be a space where dancing is not the focus.

I actually find that most (Psy)Trance is actually pretty soft / fluffy, so it's kinda nice to have someone playing noisecore on the 2nd stage!!           new Hadal Drop album on the way

if you don't have the last one get in touch

For sure!! it's so nice to hear fresh sounds from other genres played out side... drum n bass or chemical brothers style... it;s always nice to hear some old 60's-70's psych rock or folk styles... if it's just the same old psy dub stuff i gets pretty boring, and there can be great 4/4 downtempo, lots of the old goa compilations have some of the best experimental trakcs, with breakbeat and drum n bass style with the trippiest sounds...
